You think the plaintiffs would have settled for this amount months ago? I don't.

This is a great point.

If they would have settled this from the beginning for 5mil or less we should have done it before it blew up.

I guess we will never know

SIAP but this is from Brice at 247

"I had talked w/ the bosses today at 247, having been told settlement was imminent --- expected by tomorrow morning.

First, this was done from the top down. It came from Dr. Joe DiPietro's order to get it settled to move UT forward and help get the school on the process back. That's from numerous folks familiar with proceedings.

Obviously, this is huge news and an overall positive for the University of Tennessee at all levels --- athletics, academics, public relations etc.
It's especially important from a recruiting standpoint. It's a major negative that overall will begin to fade away.

As for the settlement sum, I was told "It's way less than what we had feared but still twice as much" as if UT had settled before the suit ever was filed.

This is a victory for Butch Jones, & look for him to receive staunch backing coming out of this. Am told UT strongly believes in Jones' handling of matters and his discipline in the program."

I am starting to join the folks thinking Dave Hart will be gone. Remembering now the coaches holding that press conference without him.

LWS mentioned UT could have settled it for half as much, long ago.

Don't know how he could KNOW that...and I disagree. The plaintiffs went into this looking to sock the university. Bet it would've taken 8 million + and legal fees before their case started to sink.

According to Knoxnews article, they've already paid out $220K in legal fees. The case could drag on indefinitely at that rate, and I guess they probably reached the point where it was decided that it would be cheaper to settle. Also according to the article, UT acknowledged no guilt in the settlement.

Nobody ever admits guilt in a settlement. It's standard language in a release.

Lol

So now that it's over Brice says the lawsuit was a major Negative in recruiting

How the hell we ever supposed to believe anything he says?

I never understood the thinking that the lawsuit was in some way impacting recruiting. The fact that money, 2.48 million made it all go away points to no reason it would have or should have impacted recruiting. Its not like coaches jobs, scholarships, or bowl bids were ever even part of it. Money, that's it.

While that's true that's not what recruits were being told. Negative recruiters were saying thing like Butch would get fired and comparing it to Baylor. While it sounds ludicrous to anyone who'd examined the case, recruits aren't sitting down and examining a lawsuit as though they're a lawyer. And with what happened at Baylor it was easy to paint a horrible picture.

May be a stupid question but could the settlement have anything to do with the poor recruiting or is that totally unrelated?

Way too much emphasis being put on winning big this year and cbj ability to recruit going forward

Won 9 games last year and that's the "problem" with the 17 class per many posters here. Is winning 10 this year going to fix that?

Just seems many are suggesting cbj is all in with this year and without an SEC title run his ability to recruit is over.

I am in no way ready to put that many chips on the table for this year and having to win at that high rate to say cbj has this thing moving in the right direction

Whether you like it or not thats what it's come to.

Either win the SEC this year or go back to irrelevance. Recruits aren't falling for slogans any more. Its all about results. If we're only selling hope, why go to Tennessee over a place like Georgia?

2016 is Butch's shot to create a dynasty here at Tennessee or he'll be gone soon after.

Not sure, just know most seem to trust his info. He broke it down in the FF thread. Said UT could have settled it before the suit was actually filed for 1.25.

I agree but at 9-3 it seems many are saying CBJs ability to recruit at the needed level to succeed here is over

You really want to put that much emphasis on this year and one game give or take?

If so what's next?

Dude. It not a question of whether you or I put that much emphasis on this year.

Butch Jones has done it. He's the one that landed consecutive top 5 recruiting classes. He's the one that has Tennessee as a preseason top 10 team in 2016. He's the one that has 2 guys on the preseason Maxwell list and 3 on the Bednarik list.

2016 is make or break for this program. Either we win the East, play in Atlanta, and either make the playoffs or play in a New Years Six Bowl or the season is a FAILURE.

Sorry but 9-3 won't be anything but a colossal failure given the roster.

It would end any hope we can have in Butch that he's the answer.

Dude you do realize that 9-3 might very possibly win the east and do those things you say will make us don't you?

Anyway you can find that post?

If that's true somebodies head should roll for not settling then

He said,

UT learned of the lawsuit last May and knew it was coming. They and plaintiffs met in fall to discuss settlement. It was at that time it was turned down. UT actually offered a counter of 10% to settle. that is 5% of what they ultimately settled on.

Hard not to trust Larry on this one

Ignorance at it's finest if he does indeed have it right

Arrogance even more than ignorance. I don't think UT understood for a moment how low those attorneys were willing to go in order to slaughter us in the press. The initial 'we've done nothing wrong so we're not settling' attitude was probably a part of it too. Just a dumb move in this day and age without really understanding that the climate today is as such where any Title 9 lawsuit is toxic to an institution and one involving sports is even more toxic because the press eats that kind of thing up.

But I'll say this, those attorneys made this one what it was and probably because UT pissed them off with such a cheap counter.

No way.

Tee committed to Clemson on his visit (why their sources were confident) came to OCD, and either committed to Tennesee, or certainly led the coaches to believe he was about to commit, (why our "inside" sources were confident, as well as most TN media), then turns around and trolls the Vols.

He saw how Hunter Johnson did it, and followed like a puppy dog, as opposed to recognizing it as a dirty move (but all is fair in llove and recruiting, right?)

The only way I let Rodgers, Higgins or Johnson even sniff the TN facilities is with a public decommitment from Clemson. Those cats are thick as thieves, and their only goal on TN campus is to divide the TN program... period.

Tee has seen what he needs to see at TN, and decided to bounce.

Peace out.
Nick, I've read a few of your posts in the TH thread and now here. I've never seen what I am perceiving as frustration about a recruit from you. I think seeing how you are reacting really puts in perspective how poorly TH has handled this. Granted, he is a kid, but hopefully he learns.

In the same breath, keep on keeping on brother. I don't know you, but you are in my prayers daily. 2 Timothy 2:15.

Yep. Hopefully they target all of our rivals in the southeastern conference because this stuff goes on at those places too

I actually hope that all the schools who have used it against us in recruiting get nailed and nailed hard. Georgia, Bama, Florida, Clemson, and you might as well throw in Vandy.

Thanks,

Yeah, I've been rather miffed, but kind of moved on, lol. :hi:

Re: Brice

Was he saying one thing at under Hubbs at VQ, and something different once he moved to 247?

I honestly don't know, but that might have something to do with the different stories.
