Seems really a really low amount to me. considering the number of plaintiffs and the huge chunk of that the plaintiff attorneys will get.

Maybe so but there was a lot of talk about this all being bs. Seems like to much $ to go thru all this for doing nothing wrong

If they had only settled Friday, I'm sure Tee would be a Vol today. Dammit! Just our luck!

Figured I would go ahead and throw that out there before someone else comes in and says it.......and they mean it.

Innocence or guilt has little to do with it. Its a business decision. You get the suit overwith instead of dragging out for years and you save many millions in lawyer fees.

And here we go...Bruins stance is that it's a lot of money (because he knows it's really not) so he can argue with anyone wanting to waste their time. LOL

Hell of a lot of $ for it to be a bad case

According to Knoxnews article, they've already paid out $220K in legal fees. The case could drag on indefinitely at that rate, and I guess they probably reached the point where it was decided that it would be cheaper to settle. Also according to the article, UT acknowledged no guilt in the settlement.

@Mark_Schlabach: Tennessee said it spent $220K on legal fees and would have spent $5.5 million to litigate case through trial

Not for a university of Tennessee's size. The way the system is set up now, colleges are in a serious bind and many of them find it is better to pay the money and avoid the attention than it is to fight the allegations in a media that is generally going to be predisposed to be hostile towards a large, faceless institution.

Reasonable. The sad reality is regardless of the truth, settlements like this are often the best out of a lot of bad choices. At least this is quick and we can move on. Good to have this behind the team in advance of Media Days.

Maybe a big settlement will incentivize people to sue Alabama or Clemson or someone.

When you hire big firms to represent you, the bill adds up quickly. In the large scheme, it's not a huge payout. However, if they were willing to pay, it would be interesting to see where the talks started.

All the university has done is buy a signature and release and most likely a non disclosure. Doesn't mean guilty. Simply dollars and cents and public perception. It will be talked about for a week and forgotten. Just like FSU. Baylor will steal more headlines. Then the next university

@JimmyHyams: Half of the $2.48 million settlement will be paid by UT athletic department, the other half by UT. UT admitted no guilt.

AD pays half, the university pays the other half. So 1.24 million out of the Athletic Dept.

Hell, sell tickets to a practice this fall. $25 bucks a head. If 50,000 showed up, that's 1.25 million right there. Tell the fans it's to pay the settlement....they would probably fill the stadium and could pay the whole thing. Open the concession stands and use that money for charity.

Something tells me that wouldn't be the wisest PR move.

Yep. That's the calculation. People will misread this and say by doing it they are implicitly admitting guilt, but that's really not the case. Most rational people in their shoes would do the same, all things considered.
