9-1-16? (Vols' season opener moved to Thursday)

I would bet Butch loves this because it gives the Vols more time to prepare for the Battle at Bristol.

not much of a factor actually.

still constrained with the 20 hour practice week.

most game plans are put together during summer and then tweaked as the season goes along. So for VAT, just a matter of tweaking things between Appy and VAT..

the alternative was noon Saturday on same network. much hotter in midday sun than evening. Butch was in favor of move to avoid that.

Hmmm. I can remember when Penn State (I think it was) was too scared of the heat to play us, so the lights were installed. Butch still shows his Michigan roots; I think we're tougher than that, or should be. Hope it's not hot for the Florida game.

Thanks for the explanation.

Probably for the opportunity to be on TV when not that many games were on TV. Very different story now.

not really. Louisville 91 game opened season on a Thursday in Louisville. Was there.

the only UT games not on TV that season were Memphis and Ole Miss. All others were.

Then why did they move it?

Because they asked us to.

The game, if played on Saturday, would have started at noon and aired on the SEC Network Alternate channel.

So many of the very same people now complaining about the Thursday game would have complained and threatened to stay away because of a noon start in 90 degree temperatures.

If you don't like that the game was moved, that's your right. But you have four months notice. If you want to see the Vols, then you'll make arrangements to be here or you'll watch on TV.

As far as people forecasting attendance gloom and doom, Alabama had no problem drawing 100k when they hosted Georgia State on a Thursday in 2010. Other Thursday games last year in the SEC featured crowds in line with each schools' average.

Wait, wasn't the 1996 TN-Ole Miss game on ESPN and the 1996 UT-Memphis game on CBS?

Last year Clemson, Michigan, TCU, Baylor, Stanford were among teams that played on Thursday. From the SEC, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Mississippi State ... are among those that have played on Thursday night in recent years. A key match up between Oregon, when they were ranked number 3 in the nation occurred on Thursday.

I know, I was just GOOFING.. it does piss me off that I can't go.. Hopefully they give me my money back, but I doubt it.

Ok, thank you for the clarification.

With the way the agreement goes, any idea which was likely the initiating party in moving the game (did UT come to them seeking to move the game to Thurs, the network come to UT and ask/tell them to move their game to Thurs, etc.)?

The network asked the SEC to help arrange a game for that date. As part of AD meetings in Jacksonville in March, the league approached Dave Hart about potentially moving the game to that slot after a copy of the preliminary TV schedule for the first 3 weeks was presented.

I don't think he was really wishing ill on anybody as much as just that it turns out to have enough drawbacks that the AD opens its eyes to the fact that playing midweek home games isn't the best plan for a school that has a fanbase where you've got thousands of people traveling in from across the state and even other states.

Hey somebody gets it. :good!:

Is the SEC obliged to put a game in that slot if ESPN decides that they they want one? I.e., was it a situation where the SEC had to find somebody to say yes?

Makes no never mind to me either way. We can be there. I do hate it for people who can't shift work schedules, have kids in sports/school that now can't come, have hotel reservations that might not be able to be changed or are nonrefundable, have airline tickets they will have to eat, have purchased tickets and made "donations" the costs of which they may not be able to recoup, the UT students who may (or may not) have their parking and classes affected, etc. I have none of those problems, but I can empathize with those who do. But like I said, makes no never mind to me either way as far as my ability to be there.

I'm envious of you. I wish I were in your position. True story, not my typical smart ass self.

Ok.

Hey, I have another off-topic question for you: what's the reason why ESPN doesn't release the viewership and ratings numbers of each of the games aired on the SEC Network after every weekend during the season?

Just curious if you know the answer.

They dont move football games in the NFL because of sub zero temps in Green Bay or Chicago and these guys are worried about the heat ? Who is the SEC team playing at noon on the Reg SEC N channel that would have bumped UT to the alt ? Please dont say it was UF, because it will be much hotter in Gainesville

I hadn't even thought about plane tickets. Ouch.

There's no getting around the fact that this is going to screw thousands of Tennessee's best fans, especially out of towners. I'd like to think it's because UT had no real choice, that the TV contract says ESPN gets what ESPN wants. Because if they moved this game and willingly boned our fans because Dave Hart would rather be on SECN rather than SECN-Alternate, then that really sucks.

UT is going to be higher ranked than any other team that would be on the SEC N that day and App. St is no pushover I just dont buy the logic of it all - if it was a problem the idiots that reviews the schedule when it came out last year should have noticed it and did something then

Thanks VG! Proved my point

Actually we have a 6&7 year old she does a great job raising while I travel from coast to coast and China to build our business

Right now she's at the lake with her friends (Girl's weekend) celebrating her birthday

I suck!

She's just extra salty today for some reason.
