Shoop explains what he'd have run vs Florida on 4th down

I know the transitive property doesn't really work in football but it could be pointed out that Ohio State faced a Shoop led defense and Bama's Kirby Smart led D in 2014.

Against PSU, OSU gained 293 yards of offense in a double overtime game. Against Bama, OSU gained 537 yards in regulation.
Saban nor Smart have demonstrated they can stop good read option or spread offenses with consistency. Their Ds routinely have high yields in yardage against them. Bama still trying to figure out how to stop Manziel who put up gaudy stats against them. Malzahn has no problem being effective against them offensively. Urban destroyed them.

After the fact blathering about what another coach would have done, when the result of what WAS done is known, is meaningless. The only thing that matters is how we play next time. Besides, our lack of offensive balls played a BIG role in that loss, and in the oklahoma and bama losses, too. It's very convenient--and wrong--to pin everything on the defense when the offense was doing nothing in crunch time.

Fortunately for me.... I sensed things that bothered me with Jancek in the first year. I argued then that he had underperformed the talent he had. The talent got better... I don't think he did.

I would rather win playing balls out, than to lose playing ultra conservative. That goes for all aspects or the game, offense, defense and special teams.

We are going to be able to play loose and confident that 1 mistake won't blow our chance of winning.

Sit back relax and enjoy what the Cols will do this year. It's going to be special.

Jump higher Vols.

Shoop brings confidence to the Vols D and if the walking wounded can come back from all the injuries, this Vol defense could be very exciting to watch, don't you think?

I forget the numbers but we've lost like all our games by 1-point or something over the last two or three years.

The original BSiA has clearly - miraculously? - been upgraded by the DeBordinator and Shoop.

How many more games do we win with the fully unleashed BSiA?

I think we are clearly talking about extending our 3-game winning streak against Florida at a minimum. IMHO, we make the playoffs LAST year if we have an unshackled DeBord, Shoop, and an understanding where Medley was as a sophomore on 40+ field goals. I think we make the playoffs even with the Butch 2-point conversion chart with those pieces in place.

Somehow, the Best Staff in America has been upgraded. Team 120 gone be guud!

I think if you go back and revisit the first Butch Jones presser, he said we WILL have the best staff in America. And I think right now, we do have at least one of the best. Top 5 for sure.

After the Oregon beat down, he also said it's unacceptable for Tennessee to lose in that fashion. That's one of the last beat downs I recall and we've actually almost won every game we've played.

He's crushing it, IMO, although I think they're learning a lot as they go.

Neither has any eligibility left.

DeBord was part of the last best staff in America. I think he was hired as a place holder for a future upgrade.
Shoop is an upgrade on the surface. Time will tell.

Gonna be hard sneaking up on folks blowing that trumpet.

I don't think Shoop cares much about sneaking up on anyone or anything. His history as Vandy's DC has already demonstrated what he can do with less than stellar talent.

I seem to remember a comment Saban made when asked about his philosophy on blitzing on D....

he said something to the effect that he would at least wait until they got off the bus before blitzing....

That call against Fla was a no-brainer--I don't know ANY COACH in all of FB who would not have brought the heat in that situation--except Jancek.

I think Jones has done a great job rebuilding the program as well and think that, with the addition of Shoop, that we do have one of the better staffs in the SEC, perhaps the country....I have no idea how to rank them correctly to put them in the "top 5 for sure".

As for after the 2013 Oregon 59-14 massacre, here are the facts, just for good measure.....we suffered 3 more absolute beatdowns in 2013 beginning a few weeks later....45-10 to Bama, 31-3 to Missouri, and 55-23 to Auburn.

As far as "we've actually almost won every game we've played" since the Oregon game....we're 19-16 since that loss to the Ducks....that's not "almost won every game" since.

I think he misstated that and meant that after the 2013 season that UT has been close in every game it lost. (at least that is what I took from it) IOW, no more getting blownout. That was the next step in Butch's plan...to get to the point we are competing with everyone. Now we have to take the next step, which is learning how to win the big games. I think we take that step this season.

I didn't mean "almost won every game" as in being like 29-6 over those games. I meant we almost won each of the games we lost outside of that first season. @Okla wasn't very good, but other than that I remember at least having a chance in all of our games, unlike the Dooley years where I closed my eyes and just asked how bad it was.

Ahhh, ok, got it. My bad. The only other games, besides that ones I mentioned in 2013, that we didn't "almost win", were 2 games from 2014....31-3 loss at OleMiss and 34-20 vs Bama. So, you're right, we've been very competitive in almost every game since 2013. That I can agree with. Apologies.

All good. I've slept about 5 hours in the last 3 days so my post could have been a bit misworded lol.

And I remember Dobbs coming into that Bama game and thinking if the game had 5 quarters, we might have actually won lol. Poor Worley..

We still had beatdowns by Auburn and Mizzou to endure that year.

It depends on where your moccasins sit I suppose. None of Henry's runs including that one changes the stat the Vols outrushed you guys at your house, which sort of defuses the LOS thing. Must sting a little to deflect huh?

It changed the final score, make of it what you will. As far as the LOS, Tenn had plenty of time to make it happen on their final drive. It was our defensive front at the LOS that stopped cold any notion of a comeback.

and it will be our defense front that stops you cold from winning the SEC Title this year! GBO! at least we all hope!

In the 3 years prior to Shoop, PSU avg'd 6th in the B-10 in total D. They avg'd 3rd in his two years.

Vandy was 8th, 9th, and 12th (last) in the 3 years prior to Shoop. They improved to 6th, 5th, and 6th under Shoop.

Again, he may be Sunseri all over.... Past performance isn't a guarantee of future results.... but it is the best indicator.

All things aren't quite equal. Jones has to beat the man to be the man.... but he has many advantages this year. He returns 17 starters and most of his depth. Bama lost a number of quality starters. He returns a 3 year starter at QB. Bama again has to replace a starter and this time they won't have the "easy button" of turning around and handing it off to Henry. (Yeah, you have talented guys fighting for the job but none at that level yet).

UT should be in better shape on O than Bama. Saban and his new DC have to make up for that on D.

I think he is an upgrade for y'all. Never knew him to be as truculent as I'm hearing.

Returning starters that has never made it through the first part of your schedule without multiple losses doesn't promise success.

I hear a lot about out personnel losses. Bama is bringing back seniors that usually are long gone to the NFL draft. Rueben Foster, Eddie Jackson, Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson on defense. Not sure what you are expecting to see in Neyland, but I'm predicting a lot more of the same ole same ole.

I enjoy most of our rival fans who post on this board, including LG, but all Tusk does is troll. He's the bama fan you hear about who got their honorary alumnus status from the Dollar General.

Dude, you're talking trash and your avy is decked out in plastic?

Should be a boring game for you then...any good movies coming out that weekend? :boredom:
