Florida game confidence

I know you guys just finished up, but it is a fascinating question to me.

I personally don't think games ever (well, practically never, I'm not one to rule out fluke results) revolve on a single play. On the other hand, all 120-180 plays in a game are not equally important to its result.

In any game whose final score is within 8 points, one can usually find anywhere from a handful, up to a couple of dozen plays that could reasonably and realistically gone a different way, and that all by themselves could have flipped the game's outcome if they had.

In last year's Oklahoma game, I counted 14 key plays like that. All 14 could realistically have played out differently, with a different call by a coach, or better execution by a player or group of players. And if any one, just one, of those 14 plays had gone differently, the Vols would've won the game in regulation.

I'ver never dissected the Michigan-Michigan State game, but I suspect you could find more than one play (the final play) like that. I would bet there were at least a few. So yep, it's perfectly fine to point at the final play and say it was the game-changer. But I'll bet there were other game-changers just like it, only none of them quite to flamboyant or positioned right at the 60th minute.

It's a fun element of the game, looking for those key plays.

And your conversation was very interesting to me; thanks for it!

Your post made me think this:

1st maxim: The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

A competative game, it's on the money.

Jump higher Vols.

UF went 4-8 in 2013 and lost to an FCS school. Starting Peterman in the swamp was a mistake and a rookie coach would have known better. Even worse than starting him was his insistence that he keeps trying to pass the ball against that D. That game should have been a defensive struggle won by field goals and the pick 6.

VolNation insisted that Worley be benched for something different. CBJ quit reading here after that game.

Surely to goodness he didn't make that important, or any decision, for his football program based on what anybody had to say on a message board. I've been critical of some of Jones' decisions, but that would by far be the most egregious IMO.

I will watch early in the year to see how their QB play looks. I seriously doubt that anybody on their current roster is a 67% passer like Grier was...those don't come around too often. The lost some great talent on the defensive side of the ball and are thin at LB.

If their QB play looks the least bit shaky I will bet myself on this game, because I think we boat race them if that's the case.

Rumors are that Del Rio, with a year of working in the system plus his prior experience, is the real deal.

Rumors.

The kid that couldn't stick at either of his last 2 stops? If he hasn't won the starting job over 2 freshmen by the end of spring ball then you should be concerned.

I'm also not convinced.

Just anybody but Treon, please. Literally, go wildcat and run every play.

That would be perfect for us. No way we lose to a team that just plugs someone like a WR into the QB position and then runs basic offensive plays :(

I saw the schedule of all the spring games a few days ago & I seem to recall it started at 7:30 on the SEC Network but don't hold me to it.

One thing to keep in mind is that often defensive units are ahead of the offense in the spring & Florida's defense is their stronger unit of the two so I wouldn't expect too see a whole bunch of offensive fireworks coming out of the Swamp tonight. Probably going to have to wait for the fall to see if anything has really changed on that side of the ball for UF.

We can get some good tape on them.

Jones should make it a fun day and have the players swap sides.

The more I think about it the more I feel this series will turn into an evenly matched affair. UF if going to be running a pro style offense under McElwain. This is the same as Bama and UGA. I think Butch has been building this team to stop Bama and their pro style. UF talent is similar to UGA and no where close to Bama. Expect our games to be like the UGA series where they are closely matched but we win when we have more returning starters and they win when they have more.

This is definitely the game that is in our teams head, especially since we've had them beat the last two years, and wet the bed. That being said what do you thing the odds are that we end the 11 game losing streak to the gators? We will more than likely be favorites and the game is in Knoxville.

Zero confidence...

Won't believe it until it actually happens. I know that is negative. Just being honest.

That definitely explains your 5 wins in the last 25 years of this nip and tuck rivalry.

If there is anything that should have been learned by now, it is to ignore everything about Florida that occurs before the Tennessee game.

Well, looks like Eddy Pineiro will hit a 75-yard FG to win the game for UF on Sept. 24.
