Recruiting Discussion

McRae also played behind Skyler McBee.

Sure, you don't recruit players to sit the bench but there's going to be guys that don't have a big impact until they are juniors and seniors.

Not a big deal at wing bc we should be pretty solid there but we need some immediate contributors at post and PG

Hard to think you're signing kids who won't be impactful until three seasons in. I know it happens, but usually that's an accident, not a plan.

Kyle Alexander was being recruited that way to Texas, simply because of need that he's not redshirting this year at Tennessee.

Exactly. Johnson doesn't fit either position so I have a hard time seeing him beating out any of Mostella, Hubbs, Phillips, Schofield, Turner and Parker for minutes. Maybe he beats out Parker and he redshirts, regardless I do think someone from the '16 class redshirts to help even out classes a bit, and to me Johnson seems the most likely.

He'll be behind a 5 star and a top 50 player, no?

True, but a bit different situation. But the 5 stars McRae was behind were a bit more accomplished in college than the guys Johnson will be behind.

By the way, I agree Johnson needs to be red-shirted. I think he's more in need of weight than Fulkerson.

McRae was a JUNIOR and still backing up McBee.

As ziti has said, McRae was behind MCBEE, 'nuff said

Check the box scores from games in November and December of McRae's junior year. McBee started and McRae came off the bench.

After the Memphis game (McRae's coming out party) McRae was an every game starter and played more minutes than anyone from that point.

Too bad it seems like we will have 1 scholarship for the 2017 class. Some solid names that we are recruiting.

Parker and Bone would have been my choices.

So, you'd take two guards and no post players in 2016? That seems about as mystifying as Barnes loading up on 2016 players. Or are you saying that those are the only two of the five we took that you approve of?

Also, Parker's interest in Tennessee after withdrawing his commitment to Rutgers (?) was strongly influenced by the Jalen Johnson connection. If we don't have Johnson in the fold, we likely don't land Parker, so they seem to be tied together.

I would have taken those two in the Fall and waited until Spring to find the posts. The posts we signed in the Fall did little to nothing in addressing the teams need for size. You may be right But Johnson, although Rob Lewis downplayed the connection when Parker signed.

Question...the staff is still looking for 1-2 additional posts, what luck are they having in the spring in finding posts that suggests they should've waited? It's not as if we are heading Bruno Fernando wants to be a Vol and we don't have room, or that Thon Maker is interested in the Vols but has been told we are full.

I guess my point is that the spring period isn't exactly proving to be flush with C and PF prospects.

We are still searching the globe (literally) in search of them, and all we can come up with is a longshot from Turkey and an overweight kid from a JUCO I've never heard of.

Williams and Fulkerson are probably going to prove to be better than anything we have a realistic shot at in the spring. Time will tell if that is a credit to them or an indictment of them.

You may well be right, but at the end of the day, we have another 6-5 or 6-6 post (Williams) who may be 6-4 the way Barnes measures them and a 6-7 skinny kid who is more suited to the perimeter (Fulkerson), when this team needed size more than anything. Now, Barnes may get size in the Spring, but he has a jammed up roster as the result of committing two scholarships in the Fall to kids who didn't address the fundamental size deficiency.
