Rocky Top is real close to eastern Kentucky. We have bear, deer and very large and abundant elk. I see turkey and deer nearly every time I go hiking. I know deer aren't as plentiful in the coalfields region as they were before the plague a few years ago, but they are making a great comeback. I don't know much about other game birds as I have never hunted for them before.

Elk in eastern Kentucky?

I had no idea on that one

There are now around 13-15,000 Elk in the 16 county reintroduction zone. There are two draw hunts. It has been wildly successful. The old strip mining areas actually had a good use after all. The elk live the grass and shrub covered mountainsides. Google Kentucky elk hunting.

15k whoa! That's awesome. Kinda ruins the mystique of an elk if one can find said elk in Kentucky. lol. That's probably one backwards animal haha.

Red wolf failed. The elk have done well I believe. I saw some once in a drive through the mountains.

The Red Wolf reintroduction failed as a huge percentage died of starvation, and those that wandered too far away from isolated areas of the Smokies ended up being shot or hit by cars. TWRA said it was lack of large game, but there are tons of deer there (probably too many deer as is the case in my area). Does not make sense.

I'm waiting for someone to hit or shoot a mountain lion and then listen to the state of TN explain that away as an escaped exotic pet.

A few years ago they started a drawing for the Sandhill Cranes in TN, I think you are allowed two a season. I hear it tastes like chicken...

I saw a mountain lion here about 8 years ago. My dad was there as a witness. Walked next to a large round bale of hay so it was easy to tell its size. Never seen anything else like it around here. I've heard others say there not here. Welp...
