East Tennessee Weather

West Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Arkansas got hit by tornadoes tonight and 3 are dead and over 40 homes destroyed. May even hit some places tomorrow. Be safe out there!

My current thinking later on tonight:

I think in the next few hours, East TN will be issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. I will say that even if a T-storm watch is issued, that doesn't mean that the tornado threat is zero. I just think that this will mainly be a damaging wind event, with an isolated tornado or 2 possible.

Something interesting that I've noticed is that despite the sun already set, the temperatures are gradually getting warmer.

Alert!

The western half of East Tennessee is now under a Tornado Watch until 5:00 AM est. Knoxville is just outside of the watch, but I would still be on alert in Knoxville as storms don't always stay in the watch box.

Update:

Unless the cluster of storms southwest of Knoxville starts to intensify soon (which could still happen), it looks like we will see strong thunderstorms just below the severe level. This is why I take whatever the Weather Channel says with a grain of salt.

Significant weather advisory for knox...jefferson...anderson...
Grainger...and union counties until 245 am est...

At 204 am est...doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 7
miles northeast of farragut...or 8 miles west of knoxville...moving
northeast at 70 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Knoxville...oak ridge...jefferson city...dandridge...maynardville...
Rutledge...farragut...plainview...new market...strawberry plains...
Halls...blaine...luttrell...maloneyville...buffalo springs...joppa...
Lake forest...mascot...paulette and karns.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm...and may lead
to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 15 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

Had a tornado a mile from my house today and the high tomorrow is 81 here with dew points in the 70s. Also have about 6 inches of rain in the past 48 hrs and counting. Completely nuts.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MORRISTOWN HAS ISSUED A

* FLOOD WARNING FOR...
KNOX COUNTY IN EAST TENNESSEE...
BLOUNT COUNTY IN EAST TENNESSEE...
ANDERSON COUNTY IN EAST TENNESSEE...

* UNTIL 430 PM EST

* AT 128 PM EST...KNOX AND BLOUNT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT REPORTED
SEVERAL FLOODED ROADWAYS. THE MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN ACROSS THE
AREA WILL CAUSE ADDITIONAL FLOODING PROBLEMS THIS AFTERNOON. UP TO
TWO INCHES OF RAIN HAVE ALREADY FALLEN.

* SOME LOCATIONS THAT WILL EXPERIENCE FLOODING INCLUDE...
KNOXVILLE...OAK RIDGE...MARYVILLE...CLINTON...ALCOA...FARRAGUT...
OLIVER SPRINGS...LOUISVILLE...ROCKFORD...EAGLETON VILLAGE...
STRAWBERRY PLAINS...HALLS...BLAINE...LAKE CITY...NORRIS...
FRIENDSVILLE...TOWNSEND...WALLAND...MALONEYVILLE AND HAPPY VALLEY.

ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE WARNED
AREA.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO
AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY
DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL
ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED
ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF SMALL
CREEKS AND STREAMS...HIGHWAYS AND UNDERPASSES IN URBAN AREAS.
ADDITIONALLY...COUNTRY ROADS AND FARMLANDS ALONG THE BANKS OF
CREEKS...STREAMS AND OTHER LOW LYING AREAS ARE SUBJECT TO FLOODING.

Pattern change will bring seasonable temperatures across the area for the first week of January. So enjoy the warmth for now.

When I say patterne change I mean that the AO is flipping which will breakdown the Polor Vortex and send cold air into the deep south.
