To me there are 2 options. Option A) Pristine picture perfect grass Option B) Field Turf.

If you aren't 100% confident option A will happen over the course of time in Neyland, you go to option B.

Na. average grass surface is still better than field turf. Just like average sex is better than porn. :hi:

Hey Eric. How'd the game go for ya Saturday? My kids got restless during the game. Of course I did have them out of the bed around 5 AM. Ha.

It was one of the best days I've ever had. My daughter was so excited and was signing rocky top all day.

As we walked into the stadium she said "Oh, I just love this place!". It was awesome and got me pretty choked up.

She really liked the drum circle with the team before the game, that had her giggling and clapping and we have a video of it that she has watched about 30 times along with the team running through the T.

She also got a little restless once the game started and the only thing that scared her were the fireworks haha!

She's already asking about going back so we will make a game next year again for sure.

Yep

Muschamp
Hoke
Kiffin
Malzahn
Chizik

Early success does not make you a huckleberry

Absolutely, there are many more than can be added to that list as well.

My argument against praising CJM so early is simple. He is an offensive minded guy that is winning with defense right now. Muschamp left some studs on defense especially at DL and DB. He just couldn't get it done on offense. CJM beefs up the offense just enough to win their games. He may be the next great coach, but UF was also saying that about Muschamp after his second year.

Supposedly the coaches before jones weren't nearly as concerned with the field being in game day shape for every recruiting visit, practice, ect...

Again I am not siding with the grounds guys but that is what is being said
If true, I'd hope to see them hire someone with the stones to tell Butch they're going to paint less in the offseason so they can have a playable surface in November.

But it's not exactly a secret that Butch wants turf anyway. That could be a factor in everything as well. That's part of the reason one of the new practice fields will be turf.

Oh my. Tough week.

Actual scores:

Kentucky 17 Vanderbilt 21 L
Alabama 31 Miss St. 6 W
Arkansas 31 LSU 14 W
Georgia 20 Auburn 13 L
BYU 16 Missouri 20 L
N. Texas 0 Tennessee 24 L
Florida 24 South Carolina 14 L
Western Carolina 17 Texas A&M 41 L (I had picked Western Carolina to lose by 39, but the actual line was A&M -36, so I lost this one as well)

2-6 on the week drops me to 47-31 ATS for the year. Need to have a good week this week. Tune in Wednesday.

GBOV

Okay, it's Wednesday and time for midweek SEC picks. 47-31 ATS for the season, and coming off my worst week so far. Here we go.

Tennessee at +8.5 Missouri
Texas A&M at +7 Vanderbilt
Florida Atlantic at -31 Florida
Idaho at -33 Auburn
The Citadel at Southern Carolina (Currently Off)
Charleston Southern at -20.5 Alabama

My Picks:

Georgia Southern 20 Georgia 41

Cutting your lawn to make it look nice in no way affects the integrity of the lawn. That's the best excuse they can come up with?

Unless you tell a guy who was cutting your neighbors yard to help cut yours because your lawnmower was broken and that you would like it cut one inch lower and instead he cuts it one inch high because of a language barrier.

This is adorable, thanks for sharing.

We fondly remember RBs like Webb and Cobb. They ran wild on TURF.

Don't know why this would be considered a bad thing. I have had reservations in the past about Field Turf, mainly due to reports of the spread of MRSA. I think there have been major improvements in the care of these fields that has reduced the threat of infection.

Whoa, now that's something I never considered. So the artificial turf harbors MRSA due to all the sweat and blood the players spill on the field? I guess natural grass and latent bacteria in soil consume these things? Interesting.

For those just catching up, we're having a semantic argument about what exactly the word "ruins" means.

The next big discussion is "Turf Management: Who Screwed Up, And Who do We Fire For it?" With bonus features, "Way Back: The Grass Didn't Used to Be This Way" and "Way, Way Back: Turf Was Just Fine When I Was a Kid."

There isn't a single reason option A can't happen. There are so many grass football fields that are fine, it's not rocket science.

This turf talk got me thinking....

What's different about Haslam practice field? It does not visually look as poor as S-W field based on practice photos but UT Sports usually puts those out and they edit them to make it look good. And if any surface should look awful it's he practice field.

Also, I wonder if practicing on our interior practice turf adversely affects our performance in grass? Probably overthinking that.

Wouldn't lsu winning by one be considered a loss against the spread?

Hubbs was talking about the practice field this morning and saying it is just as bad.

So as a quick side-project I looked into UT's average scoring margin over the last few years. To give it some context, I did the same for the whole SEC from years 2012-2015 and then ranked the teams based on the results. I can post the data for the whole conference if desired, but for now, here are the numbers for Tennessee:

2012: -2.9 (rank: 10th)
2013: -9.7 (rank: 12th)
2014: +2.2 (rank: 10th)
2015: +8.6 (rank: 6th)

Some comments: this doesn't necessarily mean a ton. It's not a replacement for wins and losses, and it's not a replacement for watching what we see on the field. It doesn't account for strength of schedule, and this point in particular makes it fairly useless on a national scale (the Big 12's numbers, for example, look very different than those of the SEC simply because of the difference in playstyle). But when restricted to the SEC, where the teams generally play against each other, I think it has some value.

The "average average margin" - in other words, the yearly scoring margin for the entire SEC - hovers between 4 and 5 over the course of this sample. This year, it is ~4.2. So 2015 (to date) is the first time in at least the last four years when Tennessee outperforms the SEC average.

Dooley's most talented team couldn't achieve a positive differential. When the offensive talent from that team graduated, we bottomed out. Last year, we got back to a positive differential; this year, we're back in the top half of the SEC. Despite the frustrations of the first half of this season, we're on a clear upward track.

For reference, our next two opponents rank 11th (-2.9) and 13th (-6.7) in the SEC.

I've heard the practice field has same issues and Butch raised these concerns internally well before local or national media did. Apparently they have had a few times where he moved practice indoors because he was so irate about the conditions in practice field.

It's very concerning that as Hyams has said this staff has had to pull plays from playbook due to field conditions. It makes a ton of sense considering how vanilla we looked 2 wks in a row

Well, at least that means we can hopefully open it up this weekend.

It's the paint and more importantly the delaying of certain applications that need to be done.

In the article it states a criticism of when the aeration took place. That is one of the things that was delayed because of other events. Also the fertilizing schedule as well.

Again not siding with the grounds crew but there are two sides to each story
