Yeah, this year's recruiting class has been a known commodity for quite some time.

To be exact, I'm pretty sure that it was early summer when I said if UT got a class that ranked in the top 8 this year that I would streak through The Fort.

Look for this year's class to be somewhere around 9-14.

LOT of people hoping and praying for no better than 9.

Hmm...why? He has proven nothing in college. Makes me wonder if he knows a lot of change is about to occur in Athens, and he doesn't want to be there to be a part of it.

He's graduating, had injuries and won't see much more action next year if Chubb is back. So he probably doesn't want to risk injury with less playing time

Do people really believe this?

I said we're on the upward trend, what more do you want me to say? Almost beating some of the best teams on your schedule doesn't quite do it for me, sorry. I can see progression but we're (Butch) not there yet. Does that mean we will...?

Absolutely. A lot of people won't buy into Butch until he beats FL or Bama and gets to the SEC championship game.

At the very least, Florida.

Dude, recruiting is the lifeblood of any football program. This is where Butch shines. If you believe we're not getting better, you're nuts. It may not be on your schedule but we're pretty damn close to being back. One more year of stud recruits should do it for us.

Read dude. I said we're "on the upward trend..." and "...the only thing he's solidified is recruiting."

So....that pretty much dicredits everything you just said.

Kingsport
I grew up here from birth till HS Graduation then headed on to UT so I know it well. Dobyns Bennett HS is one of the best public schools in the state. If you live in the city limits your kids would go there.

It is a nice conservative community and a really great place to raise a family/grow up. Fun Fest is a pretty good time in the summer and it seems like downtown Kingsport has started to get some decent local eateries to choose from. But overall the nightlife in Kingsport is non-existent.

Fairacres, Ridgefields and Preston Forest are my favorite neighborhoods.

Eastman is huge and obviously supports the city, good healthcare options as well.

Johnson City

I never lived here but have obviously spent a lot of time here. JC has a much better nightlife than Kingsport. It has much more to offer a mid 20's-early 30's person than Kingsport.

Science Hill is a good school but not on DB's level.

JC is closer to the mountains but both have nice outdoor activities and Lakes nearby.

All in all it is a great place to live, but has a pretty slow pace of life.

Hope that helps.

Eric,

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me all that information. Schools are very important because my wife is also a teacher. We are definitely not looking for much of a nightlife with 2 kids, ha.

Wins.

I currently live in JC. We really like it for the most part. I grew up in another part of East TN so I may already have some bias. I miss some of the bigger city luxuries like nicer/better restaurants and movie theaters, but JC is improving in those areas and Bristol just opened a brand new theater which is around 30 mins away. There is also a lot of new shopping opening in Bristol. Asheville is only an hour away and has great food and good shopping as well. Knoxville is about 1.5 hours away so not too far. We drive down a couple of times per month. The city schools in the area are supposed to be pretty good. The county schools not so much, but county schools in general seem to have a lesser reputation than city. (I went to a county school and think I turned out alright.) There are several hospitals around. JC is full of medical offices in part because the med school and VA. I probably haven't lived long enough to get a firm grasp on the variations in cost of living around the state or country, but JC seems to have a low cost of living in my experience.

I don't go to Kingsport too often, but Dobyns Bennett is probably one of the better high schools in the state. Of course Kingsport has Eastman which is the prominent business in the area. Kingsport doesn't seem to have too much to offer in the way of things to do, although I have heard good things about the parks. JC has more things for the younger crowd due to ETSU being in the middle of the city. It is definitely noticeable when summer comes because the roads and city are less crowded without so many students. The area has good outdoor recreation with parks and hiking just minutes away. Good places to ski in NC only an hour away. Unfortunately, the local lake in JC will be empty for a few years due to a sink hole near or under the damn, so that has caused a lot of people to put there homes for sale that are on the lake. But there are other lakes nearby such as Watauga which is very pretty.

Sorry for the sloppiness of the post but hope that helps!

Man thanks for taking the time to give me all that info! I really appreciate it. I am married with 2 kids and live in Jackson, TN which is getting to be a bad area and the schools are not good so all that sounds like an upgrade. Sounds like I might be able to steal a lake house too.

Which, at this point, he lacks in both quantity and quality. UGA this year and SC last just aren't enough.

Doesn't mean I don't think he'll (we'll) get there just that we're not there yet.

That 2013 game against South Carolina was a big one and for some reason, people want to act like it doesn't count. I guess because it wasn't agaisnt a "major rival." At that time, we had arguably less talent and it was a desperately needed win. Unfortunately, I still think that might be our biggest win...

And they were a top 10 win at the time, iirc.

Hey, we've been pretty spoiled the past couple years by Butch on the recruiting trail.

That being said, we have the chance to go get the top DE in JUCO, the top CB in JUCO, and already have the top DT in JUCO.

Anybody else feel like we're targeting JUCO kids a little more heavily than usual? I get that the idea is win-now, but I hope this isn't at the expense of investing in younger recruits that are our future as a program.

Or maybe the crop of high school talent is not that great this year? If you look back at rivals top 100 lists over the years, you'll see some years with tons of impact players and future nfl stars (2007 and 2008) while other years the top 100 is filled with busts and barely any future pros (2005).

I'm guessing the staff is hitting the JUCO ranks hard this year because they think the 2016 high school class doesn't have the same quality of instant impact and future pros as previous classes (2014/2015) and future classes (2017).

So we've now lost to the #3, #7, and #8 teams in the country. Two by missed field goals(not the only reason), and one in overtime. I'd say we are on the cusp. :dunno:

Absolutely. A lot of people won't buy into Butch until he beats FL or Bama and gets to the SEC championship game.

A lot of people are stupid then. Butch has taken a program in ruins and made it into a legit program once again.

He might not be the guy to get us championships. But he's been a success already simply bringing us back to national relevance.

No problem! Happy to help. My wife is a teacher as well. Getting a teaching position wasn't the easiest thing, and it seemed like who you know locally played into a lot of it, but I'm sure every situation is unique based on the position and experience. As far as your kids go, I don't think you would have trouble finding a good school for them to attend. I don't have children yet, but there are several schools around that I would be completely fine with sending my kids.

So what you're saying is we should go on losing to our main two rivals for another decade and then continue to convince ourselves of our national relevancy?

Sound logic.

Not a problem at all. I think you'll find the Tri-Cities to be a great family friendly environment and a very nice area to be.

I am in my 30's now and have a daughter and while I love living in the Charleston, SC area with all the awesome outdoor activities and hot spots, I do feel like growing up here won't be the same for my daughter and future children.

Someday I may make the move back to East TN to make sure they get raised right!

Hey Eric. How'd the game go for ya Saturday? My kids got restless during the game. Of course I did have them out of the bed around 5 AM. Ha.

We were in shambles and he has helped turn us into a stable program that will not miss any bowl games for many years to come.

That's step 1.

Hopefully the next step is climbing into the upper echelon of the conference. We're not there yet. Hopefully he can accomplish that next year. He will have tons of talent and depth to work with.... finally. If it doesn't work in 2016, he will get another shot in 2017 & 18. Hopefully we can find some magic one of those years. I want at least a couple of shots at an SEC title.

But you look at teams like Georgia, MS State, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Arkansas. The coaches of those teams got them all to step 1 as well. But they haven't been able to truly take that next step to be one of the elite SEC teams.

We thought Auburn was elite. Nope. We thought LSU was elite. Nope. South Carolina got close but their window has closed. Missouri had a great run. Looking forward to sending Pinkel out with a fat loss. Both of those teams will have interesting hires to make. Both are slipping behind in the East now.

Florida is having one of those magical seasons. But I'm not convinced they're actually an elite program right now. They have had a lot go their way this year. A lot like Malzahn's first year. So we shall see.

Bama is really the only elite program in the conference. They set the standard that everybody else is fighting for. They continue to do it and stay in the mix every single year. It's unbelievable really. Winning is fragile though, and it never lasts forever. They have shown signs of vulnerability. There are enough good teams to push them and make them prove it again every year. How many seasons like that can Saban pull off?

Its hard to be elite. There are a lot of "good" teams. Like us.

Sometimes its nice to think we're back to being at least "good" again. For awhile we were sitting behind everybody in the standings. We're not great yet. But I think we have as good of a chance as anybody of getting there in the next couple of years.
