Had Butch not been a control freak and been more flexible like McElwain has with his staff you could have:

Kept Chaney and Pittman
Brought in Butch's defensive staff which transitioned reasonably fast.

Recruited like hell.

Instead he has
Let his OC walk
Hired a croney OC to "help" Mahoney
Assisted Azzani

so basically his entire offense is on crutches and he scrapped one that set school records.

Just devil's advocate stuff.

ps Chaney and Peterman are aiight at Pitt. Coincidence maybe.

Sorry, late to the conversation, but wanted to make quick comment on this:

When developing an organization the number one most important aspect is that all members are philosophically on the same page. So whether we like Butchs offensive system or not, it's his system, and he is going to live or die by it. The alternative would have been divisive and ultimately led to a torn locker room. It's a longer road to climb, but IMO, the right way is to get your people in place and change the culture the way you want it to be.

As for McElwain, I am super impressed with what he has done, but let him get to year three as well before we shower him with confetti (i.e. Brady Hoke)

Early success does not make you a huckleberry

Corn don't grow on Rocky Top but we think grass will?

Field Turf and call it a day

The little, fast, and quick guys will be so excited.

For those that didn't hear it on Swain's show, they were playing Stripling's comments from after practice yesterday. Someone asked if Kirkland's development was a benefit to the D-Line and he, obviously, said that it is. Then he told a story from spring practice.

He said that Kirkland had only been around the team for 4 or 5 weeks at that point (I think that might be a stretch, but that's what he said), and that the injured players would go have walk-throughs on the off days. He said right from the start, Kirkland would call out the D-line for not being in the right spot/alignment...said he's never seen that out of a freshman/first-semester guy.

I know we all know it, but that kid is special.

Also, Stokes said that he was told from someone "high-up" in the AD that Neyland is a special place and will have a natural playing surface.

We fondly remember RBs like Webb and Cobb. They ran wild on TURF.

Don't know why this would be considered a bad thing. I have had reservations in the past about Field Turf, mainly due to reports of the spread of MRSA. I think there have been major improvements in the care of these fields that has reduced the threat of infection.

Nothing against Field Turf, but Neyland is an epicenter of college football tradition. It deserves quality grass, and there is no reason this cannot happen with proper management.

They always come back with their easy schedule. In 2012 they won 9 games including 5 in the SEC. Everybody around here is going to be happy with 9 games and 5 in the SEC this season. lol.

Well, yeah, I will come back with their easy schedules.

They were AWFUL.

They lost the one decent non conference game they had in those 2 seasons. They beat a 3-9 Auburn, a 4-8 Florida, a 5-7 Tennessee, all while avoiding Alabama and LSU. Their big win was over an 8-5 Georgia.

Sure, they got over some humps, but let's not act like they did it against any sort of difficult schedule. Sure, its a big deal for Vanderbilt, but that doesn't make them truly 'good'.

Jimmy said the same thing over and over in that article. Could have been 2 paragraphs. But they're not talking

The only thing I find odd is sometimes Jimmy won't go near ripping a coach, but he will absolute lay in to a guy that makes less than $70k a year.

Don't get me wrong, the guy has done a poor job, but I get the impression some people think he's a $250k/year know it all.

The guy has done a poor job no doubt but there is more than meets the eye here.

The August public practice, more closed practices, and a number of recruiting events throughout the summer where the field is showcased in a game day type way that delays or eliminates important phases of turf prep for September-Nov

Not saying how legit these excuses are but those are ones being used.

It's freaking grass. You don't re-sod every year. Any person with half a brain would tell you that.

And those type of events didn't occur during prior administrations, when the field stayed in good shape throughout the season? (Excluding the Dooley era, obviously)

Supposedly the coaches before jones weren't nearly as concerned with the field being in game day shape for every recruiting visit, practice, ect...

Again I am not siding with the grounds guys but that is what is being said

According to the article, its so bad that we have had to take plays out of the playbook because they couldn't be executed on the playing surface. That's absolutely ridiculous.

I agree. In order for it to be considered "In Ruins", I would have to think something catastrophic would have needed to have happened, like........losing to Kentucky and Vanderbilt. :ermm::unsure::blink:

I think it would depend on "how" we lost. For example, if one team didn't have a quarterback and they took a receiver and just ran about 5 plays and that was enough to beat us, I might say we were in ruins...

To me there are 2 options. Option A) Pristine picture perfect grass Option B) Field Turf.

If you aren't 100% confident option A will happen over the course of time in Neyland, you go to option B.
