Chavis interviewing with Falcons for LB coaching job....

No....you are correct! But....the defence has been good enough to win more games than they have. The offence has been the problem since the Manning years. The offence is too predictable, but the defence at least gave UT a chance to win most Sat's. Defence is the least of UT's concerns as a whole. Don't give me 2007 stats....I don't care....I'm talking about longevity. How many games would UT have won the year they went 5-6 without a GREAT defense? 3? Maybe.

Chavis is very good and would be missed!

Defense
Offense

If Chavis gets offered the job, see you later. I'm all for it. Slade too. The only problem though is finding a solid replacement. Spring practice isn't far away, and finding someone to take over, and implement a new defense in a short time would be troublesome.

The offense is going to be fine. Defense wins championships. I'll grant they were playing better at the end of the year, but in college football, where every game matters, you can't give up 45, 59, and 41 points in huge games.

If you look at the actual statistics, I think you will see that the drop off has been going on for more than just one year. The 2005 defense was good but could not overcome the putrid offense. Other than 2005, the trend has been going in the wrong direction for a good 5 years now. You can argue it anyway you want to but the numbers do not lie.

Tennessee team defense ranking:

2007: NCAA-70th SEC-11th
2006: NCAA-50th SEC-8th

Didn't Chavis win a coach of the year award just 3 years ago? If Chavis leaves, it's a big blow for TN. Steele would be on the short list if he leaves, but I really doubt Chavis takes the job. Does anyone know how much NFL LB coaches make compared to his current pay?

That award isn't really for on field accomplishments.

Participation in AFCA events and off field contributions are weighted heavily. Bascially, it's like a rotary club award. Meaningless when you talk about coaching ability.

But you have to admit, playing the SEC its going to be extremely difficult to field a "top 10" defense very often... the offenses are usually just too good. It would be much easier to field a statistically dominant defense in a weaker conference.

The figures above do indicate a downward trend however... kind of inverse with the rise of the spread option, and fall off in d-line talent on the hill. And no surprise our best defenses had the benefit of an outstanding d-line...

Over the past years it seems to have this pattern:

Bad year, Bad year, good year.

We've just had two average to bad years... Hopefully we have a good year coming up.
