i really...reeeaalllly...hope this doesnt happen...our D is usually (usually, *note this past year) the one thing we can count on....could be some tough times in Vol Land
Chavis leaving would be phenominal.
I know this was discused a couple of days ago in another thread. Now, I am wondering if ViA was privy to the email I was asking about? I was starting to think it was pure board rumor. If we hire Steele, I will put in a google request to see if VIA is the agent for both Chavis and Steele. ha ha.
VIA I guessed I missed it before, where did you hear the Steele rumors from and what was the context? You usually have pretty good football sources.
I'm not 100% sure but I think he would be making quite a bit more actually.
Didn't Chavis win a coach of the year award just 3 years ago? If Chavis leaves, it's a big blow for TN. Steele would be on the short list if he leaves, but I really doubt Chavis takes the job. Does anyone know how much NFL LB coaches make compared to his current pay?
What recruiting? It appears to me that our staff knew they were going in different directions, hence our pitiful recruiting class.....I know when I left jobs in the past, my productivity waned on the way out the doorIF he leaves I think everyone can agree that he just wants to settle down, ie enough recruiting
i have mixed feelings on this, assuming he were offered and accepted the job.
on the one hand, i think Chavis is underrated as a DC. for a large part of the last decade our defense has been pretty damn good, and the players all respect the heck out of him. the def has not been up to par the past two seasons, but i think most of us realize that is in large part due to personnel issues up front. throw in the fact that this would be absolutely awful timing for another coaching change, and this, at this time, to me is a bad thing.
the only question that would need to be answered is who is REALLY available right now if he were to leave? this is not something i'd want to have to "settle for" simply because of the timing.
that said, i'm not against new ideas on defense either. with Auburn, FL etc...going to spread offenses, and the traditional offenses we'll face against SC and GA and Bama....we'll need someone that can game plan specifics for each type of opponent we play. based on last year, i'm not convinced Chavis can do that.
interesting twist to the off season to say the least.
Something else to consider...Right now Chavis has some marketability. The defense will look alraight this year, better in the secondary than along the line most likely. Without some immediate help at DT in 2009, the defensive line will be in big trouble. If Chavis wants a long carreer it would be a smart play to get out now.
With the new offenses in the sec. Dare i say chavis has become a liability. There i said it. There have been flaws in this defense for awhile. The 2005 defense was our best this decade and it was wasted. Chavis needs big ugly's to run his defensive scheme effectively and we don't have any. Sounds like johnny's kinda smart. Get out while the getting's good.Chavis has not proven the ability to stop a spread offense...or even slow one down.
Though, like Jake, I feel compelled to offer some credit to Chavis' tenure with the Vols. Maybe it is because UT had some pretty stiff defenses over the course of his tenure. More notably, UT had a championship defense in 2005.
Regretably for every bit of praise, comes a complaint. Whether it is the secondary, or the Dline, it seems that there has been a fatal flaw in every defense we have fielded over the last ten years.
When you couple that with the old school mentality and obvious interpersonal problems he brings to the staff, I think a departure at this point would be mutually beneficial.
