No....you are correct! But....the defence has been good enough to win more games than they have. The offence has been the problem since the Manning years. The offence is too predictable, but the defence at least gave UT a chance to win most Sat's. Defence is the least of UT's concerns as a whole. Don't give me 2007 stats....I don't care....I'm talking about longevity. How many games would UT have won the year they went 5-6 without a GREAT defense? 3? Maybe.
Chavis is very good and would be missed!

Didn't Chavis win a coach of the year award just 3 years ago? If Chavis leaves, it's a big blow for TN. Steele would be on the short list if he leaves, but I really doubt Chavis takes the job. Does anyone know how much NFL LB coaches make compared to his current pay?
If you look at the actual statistics, I think you will see that the drop off has been going on for more than just one year. The 2005 defense was good but could not overcome the putrid offense. Other than 2005, the trend has been going in the wrong direction for a good 5 years now. You can argue it anyway you want to but the numbers do not lie.
Tennessee team defense ranking:
2007: NCAA-70th SEC-11th
2006: NCAA-50th SEC-8th
2005: NCAA-7th SEC-3rd
2004: NCAA-45th SEC-7th
2003: NCAA-22nd SEC-4th
2002: NCAA-5th SEC-2nd
2001: NCAA-13th SEC-2nd
2000: NCAA- 13th SEC-2nd
1999: NCAA-11th SEC-3rd
