VERY well coached game

I agree for the most part, and am very thankful for the win (especially for the players), but I would still question a couple of critical calls...

  1. Every TN fan, every GA fan, every GA coach, and apparently every GA player knew that Dobbs was going to hand the ball off to Hurd when it was first and goal from the one. We should absolutely have had Dobbs under center at that point and just let him sneak it 3 times if necessary. It is one of the most difficult plays for the defense to stop. Why we chose to hand the ball off 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage is a mystery to me. If they haven't been practicing short yardage situations with Dobbs under center then I think it's time they start.
  2. On the 4th and inches play at the end of the game I would have absolutely gone for it, though I also understand the rationale to punt. However, imo given what we have seen from our defense in earlier games in trying to close out a win (and being unsuccessful), I think it was time to put the game in the hands of the offense... and quite honestly I think the percentages would play out more in our favor. We gain 6 inches the game is over. If not, GA still has to go 50+ yards to win the game.

During the offensive series in trying to get GA to jump, as the play clock was winding down, I would have also had practiced a play to have our center either give a slight "head bob" or slightly move the ball on a hard count by Dobbs. It was apparent that GA was not going to jump, so this might have been enough to entice them. Best case they jump, the refs don't notice the slight movement, and the ball game is over. Worst case is that if the Refs call us for a penalty it only backs us up meaningless yards relative to punting.

Great, more armchair coaching: I woulda, I woulda...hey, we freaking won!

okay....does WINNING this game = being WELL-COACHED?????
My answer is a resounding NO...I'm absolutely THRILLED THAT WE WON!! But just what did we do differently to earn that victory?? SJT says that our coaches performed well during this game....I respectfully disagreed....and STILL DO...

We got behind by 21 points....and in desperation HAD to throw the ball down the field to convert 4th downs...BUT HOW did we change after that?? We didn't--and almost allowed UGA to drive 99 yards to tie the game....

As for me "...acting as if there is no chance we get stuffed..." No....I NEVER said that....but I will always take my chances with HURD getting us 1/2 yard on 4th down when the alternative is putting our Defense back on the field in the hopes that they can do ANYTHING to preserve a WIN....especially with our DBs....

And--for the record--without an extremely LUCKY bounce....UGA would've started on their 20 yd line....and would probably have tied it up....and they ALMOST did so anyway...

I'd rather have 1 play to make 1/2 yard to WIN the game instead of trusting our D....and this is only 1 game out of 4 when trusting our D to preserve a win has worked....

You and the OP say that = being well-coached....

I say that kind of thinking is

GO VOLS! :salute:
Ok then. The result of the decisions was a win, I guess we will agree to disagree. Continue to cling to your hypothetical scenario that could have resulted in a win or loss vs. One that actually won the game. Go Vols.

Across the board...even when we were down by 21...i could see this coaching staff and the players going after it. It was the difference between night and day. Seeing Coach Jones coach as if he had nothing to lose was his ace. I've said it before...i believe in defining moments and this could be the one that we look back at and see it's where things started to change. Congrats to this team on a well deserved victory! All is peaceful in Big Orange Country tonight!

With all the people complaining about poor coaching, I think people are missing that we had some very well designed passing plays tonight. Firstly we scored twice off of good underneath routes to Kamara with WR's running rub routes to get him wide open for big touchdowns. Had two or maybe three fake bubble screens with release routes up the field, some of these weren't the best throws though. Also did a good job holding onto the read option until later in the game when Dobbs pulling the ball is more effective against a crashing defensive end.

Beyond that lets look at the fact that two plays resulted in a 21 point swing towards UGA. First you have Hurd fumbling and it getting returned 99 yards for a TD. You can blame the coaching staff for not going under center, but frankly the gap just got blown up and then Hurd failed to secure the ball (it's not like Debord called a fumble). Then you have the questionable block in the back call on a punt return for TD. I have been a little concerned by several big punt returns we have given up this year, we have gotten lucky to get some called back. I would need to see the replay, but it looked like a pretty clear block in the back to me and clearly one of the refs thought so too. I find it hard to see how you pick that flag up to be honest.

How are they "in his head"? Honest question, not sure what you mean.

My perspective on this goes back to the games where Josh was trying to be a pocket QB... running a script to the letter... he looked confused, he looked like he wanted to bolt and free wheel, but he would not. He stuck to the play and that was painful to watch. He looked confused or handcuffed much of the time.

So, his performance during the last 5 games last year and the bowl game were more due to his ability to know when to run... and he had great success.

This is the first game I have seen that composure again... and it paid dividends.

Josh is a mobile QB and a guy who can create something from not much... natural talent. Debord screwed with that in my opinion, until today's game.

My POINT that you are missing is that the decision to PUNT on 4th and 1/2 yd instead of going for it is just another EXAMPLE of CBJ's vaginal, "playing not to lose" mentality--just like kicking the FG against OK in the first QTR of that game--and failing to go for 2 against Fla in that game....Good grief, son, just how much FB do you really have to see???

And for the record---that kind of attitude has resulted in 1 win and 3 losses against SEC caliber teams...and a 3-3 record when--even with our pathetic DBs--we still have enough talent to be 6-0 right now.

So tell me again how "hypothetical" it really is?
OK, Fla, and Arky were NOT hypothetical games.....

Butch and company did show improvement. Still hate that we are always running jet sweeps to the short side of the field, literally every time.
Also, down around the endzone hate to see us in the pistol.
The passing game was there tonight and it was fun to watch for the first time all season. Can't say enough about Jones and Hall stepping up.

Completely agree sjt18.

Now Beat Bama, and all will be forgiven.

I don't know about all being forgiven. I think a lot of us will wonder "what if" with the three losses. Beating undefeated today would have catapulted us in to the top 5 most likely. Very happy with the win, but man "what if"?

Execution still wasn't great at times but they only went conservative a few times. They let Dobbs throw himself into a rhythm.

There were still some execution issues which is to be expected. But I thought the game day coaching today was very, very good.

Now THAT aggressive mental approach from the coaches is what was needed in the 3 losses.

Hopefully, Jones will think about it and realize that he should stay aggressive with a lead.

I have criticized when it was bad... but the staff was on mark today.

Please send your report to Coach Jones and company, I'm sure they will be thrilled to see it coming from such a well respected 'coach' in the industry.

Download the iheart radio app and listen to the sports animal out of Knoxville.

Thank for the tip! Had to miss the Arky game too as that was the day I got married. Turns out I'm glad I missed that one. I'll watch the re-run of the UGA game tomorrow night

Sports animal actually has their own app. ! Works great but is about 50 seconds behind real time.

Very bad planning on your part. Next week is the off week. You couldn't have planned your wedding to coincide?

I needed time between the wedding/honeymoon to study for my PE exam, which is Oct 30th. Wife wanted an Oct wedding so first weekend was what worked. Bad planning for football, sure. There's more to life than football though. Glad we pulled out the big W today either way

You serious? We won the game and produced over 500 yards of offense.

so yes your hypothetical strategy is not only questionable, but borderline idiodic. As for the previous losses yes I would have done things differently, but what's done is done. Anyway, keep us updated on your coaching career.

No doubt, that was a terrible decision to punt and it almost cost us even with the punt having the best possible result. But the positives from our coaching in the first 58 minutes outweigh the negatives from the final two.

I agree he should've gone for it. But the defense got the job done in the end!

The two td passes to Kamara were brilliant. I loved the design. There were many good plays schematic wise. Dobbs completed a good many 15 yard plus passes. I also thought the line did a lot better pass protecting. The wide receivers were more physical. Just a great game on offense. The defense bent some but didn't break. I think it's the second game in a row that they allowed only 7 points in the second half.

I actually think at point risking a run in middle, or slow developing sweep or inconsistency to make a catch - it was best to punt.
What I would have preferred would have been a first down shot on 1st or 2nd!!
That is playing to take the game!
With that said, he is a very good coach and I've said all all along is we're much improved and much closer than we have been to being good! It's a tough business, 3 plays right now from being a playoff contender! 1 play from 2-4! It's just crazy really!
Let's make the extra play from Bama and root for UGA to regroup and LSU and UGA to take Florida. A 3 way tie in east is our best chance to ATL - I think!

Watched some of the Bama Arky game. Don't think this is our year. Our DBs will get burned like the Razorbacks did and bama stuffed their running game. bama is to big and fast and to deep. Just what I observed

It'll be tough for sure at their place. But, if breaks went our way UGA coulda easily been a huge runaway. And we saw what Ole Miss was able to do with couple of breaks. It may not be 50/50 game but very real possibility we can pull this off with couple of plays going our way!
