Extremely premature coaching candidate discussion (merged)

I refuse to believe his buyout will be a problem. There is a load of talent for a new coach and you have to strike while the iron is hot.

Take out an unsecured loan from a Columbian drug lord for goodness sake....whatever it takes.

No longer "extremely premature". There are crowds with pitchforks and torches at the gates now.

Its not happening
We aren't Alabama or Michigan. We will have to choose an up and comer. Just pick a legit one. Memphis was an absolute dumpster fire, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them beat Ole Miss.

Tom Herman...established great recruiter and winner this year and the mind behind OSU's offense last year.

Love the Whittingham idea. Don't think Patterson would leave a very soft Big 12 anytime soon. I'll always have Gruden as my fantasy/never-going-to-happen-but-I-want-it-anyway candidate, but this administration isn't willing to pay for a name-brand coach. In any case, I don't think Hart pulls the trigger on Butch this year, and not next year if Team 120 wins at least 7 games.

Whittlingham is a devout Mormon and turned down an interview with us already.

But we need an administration to make Gruden happen.

Time to start thinking big. Era of the SEC Network means mid major level thinking will put you behind Vanderbilt.

Please tell us everything you know that went down in 2012 with the "gruden" situation. Not calling you out on it just sincerely curious.

Let it go, EVH. For everyone hoping about a splash hire, there will be no:
Gruden
Manning
Fulmer
Kelly
and any other big-name hot shot that keeps being dredged up like rotting garbarge.

That's what he owes UT if he leaves. Which he might try to do.

If we fire him it's $2M / contract year. $12M if we fire him before February.

His actual contract was posted on another site and he must try to obtain employment and whatever he makes per year will be subtracted from the 2 million. The difference is what we pay him. But he must seek employment. Otherwise he may be subject to lawauit. So I don't believe he can just sit around for 6 years and collect a paycheck.

Hire Navy's coach. We seem to have the right personnel already in place, and I "think" we could win the Commander In Chief's Trophy next year. Still too young this year.

A former player said today on a high school football board that people would be surprised how close the Gruden deal was.
Yes, yes, we've heard it all previously, signed contract in the desk drawer, Haslam, had a yada yada yada. Gruden to UT, was BS then, its BS now, it will be forever BS in the future.

Just hear me out on this one.....

Dickey went to our (at the time) most hated rival, and then came home. Turned out to be a good move.

Sooner or later, Kiffin will get another HC job. Hate him if you want, but he can coach, and he can recruit talent.

Saban knows talent when he sees it. He hired Kiffin.

After a few years in the Saban system, Kiffin is going to be smarter, and hopefully wiser and more mature.

I'd give it a near-zero chance of happening, but if we're looking for a coach (and we are) that can come in, assemble a quality staff, and win right away, Lane Kiffin would be...and will for some school...a solid hire.

Just sayin'

Kiffin will never happen. Gruden with Bill Belichick as DC is more likely.

Excellent post.

We didn't get the death penalty last time so if he has more than ONE year? Just sayin. :hmm:

Yeah, I said "near-zero chance". The thing is, someone will hire him, and he will win. He has a Power 5 pedigree, and is a proven winner. Plus he can recruit. Plus he can put together a strong staff.

The only question would be if he has learned anything from his mistakes with high-risk recruits; his ego; and his unhealthy fascination with all things USC.

If he has, then Lane Kiffin could turn out to be a very good hire for whatever school offers him a job.

And eventually, one will.
