Serious question, when Dooley hired Sal, what were your guys' thoughts?

I wanted Randy Shannon. I also thought it was a dumb hire considering Sunseri's lack of DC experience and the fact that 2012 was such a critical year for the program.

When I found out he was installing a 3-4, I thought we were screwed. The NC State game alleviated my fears a bit, as the defense looked awesome. But by the time we played UF, it was pretty clear the scheme and talent were severely lacking. It only got worse from that point on.

Don't know if a lot of folks were overly enthused about Sal, but I know that most people over on the VQ were talking about Dave Clawson as the head coach in waiting when he was hired.

I thought Sunseri and Clawson were way too young and both had too much hair to be hired in the DC and OC jobs. Should have gotten someone old and bald.

I don't think Sunseri was that bad of a coach, but for Dooley to hire a DC that runs a 3-4 scheme when our players were recruited for 4-3 scheme, has to be one of the dumbest moves i could think of, especially when his job was on the line.

Almost makes you wonder if Dooley knew he was way over his head, and just wanted a way out, so he could collect his $5 million and leave. Makes me think it even more so, if it is true that he inquired about the UNC job the year before, after he lost to UK.

That Dooley should have promoted Lance Thompson to DC and hired Sunseri as the LB coach. Additionally, that UT was paying Sunseri an extremely large amount money for a guy with very little experience as a DC.

Put it to you this way...

Just because I'm opinionated should by no means indicate that I can predict the future. :)

Also...I scrutinize a lot more now because of the lessons learned during that dark blot on our program's history.

Maybe you should up your game?

Call it whatever you want, no skin off my neck.

I have an opinion that doesn't mesh with popular sentiment on here and yet, though I've maintained that regardless of who the OC is, we should win 9 games..."I like to complain." Riiiight.

Discuss, yes. Debate, definitely. Complain...nope.

I don't like the OC hire and, aside from today, I haven't really posted a lot about it, certainly less than some. I'm just not going to jump on board the group-think bandwagon that Debord is a good hire, simply because Butch hired him.

There seems to be a misunderstanding here, however...I can not like a hire but still root for the guy's success. Why that consistently gets lost in the fray is beyond me.

Honestly, it's just the one guy that keeps beating the DeBord Sucks drum, but you did kind of pick it up after him.

Very few have said he's a great hire on paper or that they absolutely love the hire. Most of us are just hoping he works out and look for the positives. The vast majority of us recognize we have no clue if it will work out. If it was as easy as looking at a resume, hiring a coach at any position would be supremely easy. It's not. Great resumes fail all the time.

@UTCoachDeBo: We had our first Offensive staff meeting today! It is great to be surrounded by great teachers of the game of football

Pretty much this. I haven't seen all this "group think". Just people acknowledging that none of us really have enough of a clue to know whether this will be a good hire or not so endlessly complaining about it is pointless.

VN is terrible at predicting the success of coaches. I would think at this point people would have learned that and just wait and see what happens before they sharpen their pitchforks and light their torches

Picked it up because someone posted something that pequed my interest...and I actually had time to post today. That's rare these days.

I do not like the hire nor do I accept any narrative that spins it in a favorable light but, I'm rooting for him to succeed, truly...what choice do I have? My blood runneth orange.

I for one like it . The Usual Fook Heads have been denied in OMG'S " Dear Mr Holloway " thread . That is the best use of this forum I have seen , lately .

Our bball team blows.

No size in the post. Worst three point defense in the world. No depth. Very young. And J Rich leaves next year. Damnit

My thoughts were why did we hire a guy to be DC who has never been a DC before. I understand that coaches have to start somewhere but that somewhere shouldn't be the university of Tennessee. Also I questioned the Dooley hire as we'll. if I were AD I would NEVER hire a coach who has NO experience as a DC or OC. With Debord at least he has a lot of OC experience. My only question would be that it has been a while. Big picture I support UT so Im behind him 100%

It's definitely a rebuild job. What Tyndall has been able to do is crazy with what he had. Eventually you can only go so far with no post presence.
