I've intentionally not commented on the DeBord hire because I wanted to just see what was said about his past experience and what he brings to the table for the offense. So here are my thoughts. DeBord is a knowledgeable and experienced coach, both HC and OC. It would appear that he is a student of the game. With him being out of coaching for several years, catching up will be a challenge. I can understand him stepping back from Div. 1 college coaching with its constant grind, both the coaching and recruiting. It has been widely speculated that it was the non-stop pace that forced Bajakian to move to the NFL. Family time was a major factor. So one must wonder why DeBord would get back into the game at this point in his life. I'm going to take the high road and assume that he just missed the game and its challenges. Also working with CBJ was a draw.
DeBord has experience with and used both a pro-style and spread offenses. He should easily move into the CBJ offensive schemes. I think the biggest problem he will face is the newer defensive schemes that have emerged in response to the up tempo, spread offenses being widely used today. He must develop a strategy to consistently attack these defenses and exploit their weaknesses. In the past, he has used big, strong, mobile OLs as the foundation of his schemes. Make no mistake, DeBord will have an influence on every aspect of the offense, especially the OL. While QB coach is a part of his official title, the GA Sheridan will be the hands-on, day to day QB coach. CBJ will probably have a difficult decision to make next year when Sheridan will be looking for a fulltime coaching position. At that point, something will have to give in the coaching structure.
I project that the offense will have closer to a 50/50 balance between running and passing. The running game will be downhill and based on power. Any OL that is not strong, will sit the bench. This offseason is critical for them, especially Blair, Kendrick, Sanders, Thomas, Raulerson, Wiesman, and the freshmen. Mosley will also be an important factor if he develops. The passing game should be about the same, except the QBs should have a bit more time to find targets. Also I expect to see the pocket to be more mobile this year.
While I'm not happy that DeBord has been away from the game, I think he will do his homework and be prepared. Play calling will be rusty initially, but he will get there. So my overall assessment is concerned, but optimistic.
