Looking more and more like DeBord will be the new OC

You think an experienced proven QB coach will be easier to hold on to than a QB coach that was fired from his last job and is now a GA?

To add some perspective on this, he came to USF with Willie Taggart and after exactly one year of working with some hot slaw players was canned along with the OC in order to save Taggart's mediocre ass.

I'm not sure this indicates failure any more than Richt scapegoating Jancek and Martinez.

I think at this point I am rooting for Jones to hire DeBord just so I can grab some popcorn and a cherry coke and watch VN enter complete crap-your-pants meltdown mode.

Sadistic, yes... but the freak out over this guy has been hilarious to witness. Imagine the glorious carnage that would ensue. Think zombie apocalypse meets Chernobyl and has a three-way with the ending of the movie Seven where Brad Pitt looks in the box.... except with more drama!

Oh yes.... glorious indeed.

ahhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHH FREAK OUT!

Im not saying a "yes" man would be wrong all together.

But bringing in someone that can add to what you are doing and maybe fix some things you dont see shouldnt scare you off either.

Dont confuse that with bringing in a guy thats gonna want to change everything you do from top to bottom, but If Im Jones I embrace new opinions and ideas.

Gotcha!

Don't get the fixation by a some folks on DeBord's age.

People who are the same age as Mike DeBord: Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Carrie Fisher, Bob Saget, Bryan Cranston, Joe Montana, Maureen McCormick, and Randy Jackson.

...

Oh, but they're not football coaches, I understand. So how about these guys, all OLDER than DeBord: Bill Belichick, Steve Spurrier, Les Miles, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban. That's just to name a few.

They all coach ok. The ones at college level seem to recruit just fine. Did I mention they're all OLDER than DeBord?

Age is utterly unimportant in the OC hire, I'm thinking. His 2 years away from the game is more relevant than his age, and I personally think a 2 year break is nothing.

Also our own Steve Stripling is 3 years older than Debord and he is currently ranked 9th in 247's recruiter rankings.

 Not being in a commercial kitchen doesn't mean you forgot how to cook. Football and cooking aren't the same, but you don't forget how to do either one in two years.

You're right but everything is about relationships now and a name. Like they were saying on college football today, Not many kids know who McElwain at Florida is so it's not going to be a good class. Teams like LSU hire big name recruiters kids know, Steele and Orgeron, Ala hired Kiffin last yr, a name every kid knows. It wont effect this class but going forward it could if we hire an unknown to run our offense.

Yep! Hoping Debord is not on our staff

UNLESS...

Unless DeBord becomes a name known to those high school players and their parents and coaches because of his new team's great success in 2015. Then he'd be better known, right? I mean, that's how people know names like Steele and Orgeron, is because they had success somewhere and ESPN started talking about them.

This is all chicken-or-the-egg stuff. You're a good recruiter because you're a known quantity (oh yeah, and HUGE people skills, but let's leave that aside for now). You're a known quantity because you were successful. You were successful because you did well on a coaching team at a trending school. You got a chance to coach at that school because you were a known quantity from before. You were a known quantity from before because you were successful before. You were successful before because....

Well, they say coaching is a cyclic business, right?

Age isn't an issue, its not being known by recruits and having not recruited in yrs. Does anyone think a Saban, Richt, Miles, Fisher would go a route with a Debord or go with guys who are known recruiters and been relevant as of late. Hell no they wouldn't. They lose a guy then go out and get the best of the best. Ala loses Steel and Thompson then Saban hires Mel Tucker, one of the most respected DB Coach's around..Miles loses Chavis then goes and hires two of the best recruiters in the nation in Steele and Orgeron. Auburn fires their DC and goes and hires Muchamp, as bad as I hate him he is a great recruiter and one of the best DC's around. If you wanna be elite you gotta bring in elite..jmo..Another example..Mizzou loses their DC and turns around and hires a great DC..Even Richt replaces Bobo with a well respected OC in Schottenheimer (sp)..And if we hire a guy who hasn't called plays or recruited in yrs and is basically a secretary at Mich could be devastating.

True but they have both been doing it for well over a decade..It's not like Debord is a young up and comer trying to make a name for himself.

Agreed!

I get all that, it's just that there's a lot of people on here acting like he's the oldest man alive and that there's no way he knows how to coach because he's old.

You're right, you don't do it as long as he has and not know what you're doing. But he hasn't been relevant lately and doesn't coach QB's. I'm all for replacing Mahoney with Debord as the OLine Coach, but as a playcaller and recruiter there seems to be better fits and options.

Well, Mike DeBord's been doing it for decades himself...it's just that he left the Lloyd Carr end game for a five-year stint at the NFL, then took a sabbatical for a couple years. Heard he was a really capable recruiter for Michigan before he went to the NFL.

So, it's cyclical and (if he's hired) he reestablishes his rep with the high school coaches and parents and players by doing great things in the 2015 season. Then he's right back on the bike, like he never left.

Not saying that WILL happen, just that it has a very reasonable chance of happening, and that there doesn't have to be any let-down in recruiting for the school that hires him.

If I had to guess, We hire an OC who is also an QB coach and Debord comes on staff in a QC position and helps with the o-line.

Agreed but my biggest concern would be the re-learning curve and having to reestablish yourself. And OC and recruiting is too important to have to reestablish yourself when there are tons of other guys that would be huge upgrades immediately, especially as a recruiter. I would be curious to see how well of a recruiter Debord was back in the day. We have good recruiters but we still don't have a full group of elite guys like the Bammers, GA,LSU, USC etc have. And we are doing extremely well but just think what an upgrade over CMB could do for us moving forward.

I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that some people here are just arguing for the Splash. The name that makes Tennessee seem cooler because Look At This Name We Attracted, We Are Big Time. Or the pretty face, the guy who looks young and hip and Trooper Taylor-cool that We All Just Feel Certain The Next Crop of Recruits Will Adore.

Honestly. Every argument against DeBord seems to have lurking somewhere behind it, "but this guy looks old and bald and out of touch in that photo I saw of him on ESPN / 247 / Wikipedia. Ewww."

Raise your hand if you're one of these. If it's not his age (it shouldn't be), and it's not his experience (he has tons) and it's not his past success (National Championship), and it's not his currency with newer offensive schemes (he knows them), then is it his lack of Splash! ?

Because I can agree with you, he doesn't have that star quality when you look at his picture.

Is that it? Really?

We have not lost one recruit and have even picked up more while having no OC and DeBord being known as the front runner. These actual events don't curb your gloomy predictions at all?

Yeah he is so good that Harbaugh hired him as his OC, oh wait..

There have been some great football coaches that have been fired or not retained at some point in their careers. If reports are correct, Harbaugh was possibly going to be fired by the Niners. So, does that make Michigan stupid for hiring him?
