Ask Chicago bears, Michigan Wolverines and Central Michigan fans about debord

You might as well take out Central Michigan and Chicago because they aren't even close to the same position as OC. I'm sure Washington fans think Spurrier is terrible too, along with Dolphins fans thinking Saban is.

I had a very interesting conversation today with my brother in law who is a Michigan fan and alum. He lives in Arizona now and we only talk a handful of times a year but had to call him today in regards to a family matter. We started talking our usual small talk about football. I asked him what he knew about Mike DeBord, I told him Tennessee was looking at him in regards to OC. I made the statement that I didn’t see how the style of play was a good fit for CBJ. He went on to say it would actually be a good fit, I asked how do you figure? He went on to tell me Lloyd Carr dictated what type of offensive scheme to run, and DeBord was simply following along.

Here is where our conversation got interesting, he said in the month leading up to the Capital One Bowl against Florida, DeBord approached Lloyd Carr explaining their current offense wasn’t a good matchup against Florida and recommended they open it up as he knew how to attack Florida in space. Reluctantly Carr agreed, they spent a month of practice working on the spread getting ready for the game. My brother in law keeps up with and watches Tennessee football also because my sister is a Tennessee alum. He said, when you have time go watch the Capital One Bowl, it’s the same offense Butch runs.

That day Michigan won, and put 41 points up against Florida and had their D tripping over themselves. Now I’m not saying this is proof he is the “man” but after watching this I can certainly see why Butch is talking to him. After that game Lloyd Carr retired, Rich Rod was hired and DeBord took a position as O Line coach with Seattle.

(not sure link will work, first time adding youtube link)

He knows how to beat Florida? Hire him.

I mean my opinion doesn't mean anything or have any kind of power. just like yours. I just think this guys time is over as an OC. Its not 1997.

He coached til 08. Same spread concepts beat Tebow. Same concepts was taught to a team in a shorter period than our team. We run the same spread. Florida beat us. But hey.

It really opened my eyes and changed my perspective in terms of fit. If he taught that to his team in less than a month then he can do just fine here. I just wish he was still in the game more recruiting etc but then again Coach Jake didn't recruit much at all. I also wish he had more QB experience but he could have been more involved there than we thought too.

Another theory: Butch is hiring DeBord (former head coach, current admin) to be the point man back in Knoxville while he's on the road recruiting.

I really think Butch absolutely loves recruiting and having a guy he trusts implicitly back at home holding down the fort would free him up to make it an even bigger priority.

Obviously, he trusts DeBord's offensive coordinator experience and thinks he'll do a great job in that role alone, but it wouldn't surprise me if he wants to have even more time recruiting in the future.

The NFL has more titles for guys than college staffs. The have associate head coaches, assistant head coaches, assistants to the head coach, etc.

DeBord and Quinn worked together in Seattle and that's the obvious tie there. Our information on DeBord and the Falcons job comes from coaching circles in both the college game and the NFL game.

Just finished watching the video. It is pretty much Butch's offense. You should watch it RiseToTheTop.

P.S. I'm not redneck, lol.

It's like watching the same team. Debord is obviously a teacher. If he can continue to teach what we have should be interesting. Butch preaches being a teacher, while he goes out and gets recruits. I like it.

God, I can't wait for when a positional coach leaves next year. The coaching search portion of the offseason is easily the most entertaining time of the year on VN.

Butch is limited to how much he can recruit on the road. All HCs are. After seeing that Michigan Bowl game offense I'm sold on the fit but I still need some selling on what the heck he has been doing the past few years and hope he isn't rusty

It sucks that Butch hiring Debord is going to make VN so irritable until September. It was such a promising off season full of happiness and joy. Now it's going to be filled with mostly arguments about the OC and his old bald head. Sigh.

Ron have you heard anything else from that VQ poster who mentioned QC a couple of days ago. I don't know what is more stressful recruiting or coaching searches simultaneously!! GBO!!

One thing I've learned over the years is that Hubbs and co. don't usually whiff on things like this (see Gruden search). They've been saying Debord has been the leader for the OC job for a few days now. That usually means it's a done deal and they already have a nice long article written about him accepting the job. The only thing I see changing that is if Debord accepts an NFL job otherwise he's the new OC at UT.

Commentator in 08 game says," OC Mike Debord has done a beautiful job of putting the pedal to the metal on Florida and that defense."
