Dropped my subscription years ago and I adore the printed word. However, the Tennessean is the sorriest excuse for a newspaper I have ever read. What amazes me is that a city like Nashville has only one newspaper. Perhaps that's the reason they get away with such shoddy journalism and I know many unsubscribers like myself.

Many long distance runners drink a beer or 2 after running a race...it's supposed to aid in reducing inflammation in the body. I do this myself only my distance is a bit shorter, from the sofa to the fridge.

You present a great argument in this post. You quote that you observed a young lady supposedly drunk ignored by police in a large festive crowd being ignored by police and another situation where they charge a member of the team with a citation for drinking.

You want the policeman to show discretion in his judgement in one situation but not the other. The problem is not the police but the blurring of people's perception of the laws. We expect the police to ignore drunken behavior when people are having fun, but criticize them when drunken tragedies happen.

Laws were created by the government through the people that we elect, not the police. It is the police's responsibility that those laws are enforced. If you don't like the law then change it through elections. I agree that 18 year olds should have the right to drink but the Tennessee law that allowed this was overturned years ago by mandates from the federal government. Another example of Washington guiding us fumbling idiots.

People want to demonize the Knoxville and Knox County forces but I wonder how many times there have been officers that have called the athletic department before actually taking action. I know that this has been a practice in the past.

I support all law enforcement personnel because I do not see how they can do the impossible job they do. They put their lives in danger every day and have to make snap judgements with limited information that most of us would not be able to make.

Oh BS, if anything cite the idiots out in the public that are a danger to the public and themselves instead of a kid drinking responsibly in his own dorm room.

I do agree it's a hard freaking job that cops are tasked with but let's be honest. This was a dick move on the part of the officer.

I would like to see the written citation posted in this thread but want happen. I fed my mom and dad bull about my drinking habits and got into my share of trouble. Like mom said be sure of the facts before casting stones. We got just the opposite in most of the bashing threads.:thud::cray:

Actually, they can. I'm an RA at Carson-Newman and I've busted people for having alcohol in the dorm. If you live on campus (and this goes for any campus) you are not allowed to have any type of alcohol. When you sign the letter to live in an on campus room, you agree to abide by residence life standards, and that includes room searches. If we know someone has alcohol in their room, we conduct a room search through everything they have. We go through their fridge, closet, bed, everything. If we find any alcohol or illegal substance, then we contact security and then they will contact the police. If it's someone underage, then the cops will show up and go through the room without a warrant. It's a res life policy that applies for most U.S. colleges. These guys know the rules. Don't be stupid.

The day of the newspaper journalist is almost over. With social media, blogs etc its becoming more difficult for a "beat reporter" to break a story. By the time a newspaper prints it, there 10k reports on Twitter. These poor guys are just looking for someone to.read there garbage.

Honestly it'd be more believable to me if she just said "Yeah, he drank, but college kids do dumb stuff". Maybe she's telling the truth, but it's one of those excuses everyone uses. "A friend had my car and they pinned me for *insert whatever it is*".

As I said, the police are required to enforce the laws enacted by the government, which is elected by people such as you. But to do your post justice please cite an incident where this situation occurred. Or is it just another effort to demonize people whom for the most part, do a very good job of providing safety for law abiding citizens?

She said partly that. She brought the whole friend excuse into it with the car though. Not saying she is lying, but everyone uses similar excuse. She's the mother, so take it fwiw. I don't think it's a big deal what he did, because college kids are college kids.
