Indeed. The silly, naive thought that ANY campus in this country is "dry" is simply asinine. My word....they're college kids. They're learning their way. They're HUMAN beings. The like to drink, have fun, have sex. We all did/do.

What really upsets me is that society, the fans and the media seem to want a totally different type of behavior from athletes than the rest of the student population. Just because they put on a uniform doesn't mean they aren't allowed to be human. To make mistakes and frankly, I don't think having a few beers is a "mistake". It's okay to relax from time to time. These kids....like Jalen...are brand new to the college scene. They come from HS where it's pretty easy for them both on and off the field to a college environment where they have to grow up pretty darned fast. Taking care of laundry, shopping, college level courses all along with the HUGE responsibilty and demand on their time that comes with playing SEC football. It's a lot to ask. Kids need to be able to kick back from time to time. Speaking for myself, I think the age limit for alcohol is silly. I drank at UT. Everyone I knew did. We survived.

One final rant...if Jalen did make a mistake it was in allowing a cop thru the front door without a warrant. I don't know the law on open containers but how does a cop cite him unless he had a beer in his hand? Open containers could have been from his roomies or left over from a party he wasn't at the night before. Just being in the room with an open container is a citation? Really? Time for big brother to back the he!! up and go after real criminals instead of harassing college kids looking to unwind a bit.

As for Mrs Hurd, ignore the tripe you read if you can. When my son played, I avoided message boards. Knew they'd just piss me off and the temptation to lash out would be too great. You know your son and 99.99% of the vol fan base knows him well enough as well. He's already one of my favorite Vols and I'm 55. Love his game and how he plays....like a man. Focus on him and the VFL's. Ignore the rest. Not worth your time and stomach lining.

I do feel like the media in general would rather report on the misdeeds of student athletes than the actual games. The reason I don't PPV anything anymore. No paper subscriptions, no online subscriptions mostly because there's nothing worth reading that I would pay for.

We are very lucky that this was not a bigger deal than it turned out to be. Seriously, if these kids don't have handlers, they need them--make sure they go to class, study, meet curfew, stay out of trouble, clean up the beer cans. Come on man!!!!

However, as a general rule you shouldn't be allowed to drive on your own until you reach 18 years of age absent some compelling circumstances that may justify the granting of a hardship license that allows you to drive to and from work or to and from a school where no transportation is offered by the school. (i.e. a 17 year old who is commuting to a local community college). Even at age eighteen, obtaining a license should be a more rigorous endeavor that is more akin to obtaining a pilot's license than the current process. (i.e. you should have to keep a log documenting that you have driven a certain number of hours with a licensed driver serving as your instructor, the driving portion of the exam should be lengthier and more involved ect. ect.) Additionally, when you obtain your license, you should have a probationary period (perhaps a year or two) where your license can be more easily suspended for violations of the rules of the road with a zero tolerance for consuming any alcohol and driving a vehicle during such a probationary period.

Finally with regard to alcohol consumption, rather than a prohibition that comes along with the unrealistic expectation that all teenagers and young adults are going to complete abstain from any drinking whatsoever, there should be more eduction concerning alcohol including the dangers that come along with alcohol consumption, especially binge drinking, which in my view is the real problem. Additionally, bar tenders and party hosts who over serve patrons or guests to the point of alcohol poisoning should be subject to criminal prosecution. To me, such laws would make more sense then putting out a blanket prohibition on the underage consumption of alcohol, which is never going to be adhered to.

That is just plain dumb. Yeah if someone is "cooking" meth in their home for their own use, then the cops should just turn a blind eye.

The job of the news media is to report news. When Jalen Hurd, one of the most visible members of the football team, gets cited/arrested for under age consumption of alcohol, it is definitely news.

Stop blaming the news media for Jalen Hurd's decision to illegally consume alcohol.

Consumers should have the last word. Don't subscribe if you don't care for the content over a period of time. That's what I did. The definition of what's newsworthy is subjective and the shock jock type stuff that's en vogue is petty gossip type stuff. That's what social media is for.:p

College students consuming alcohol is not as old as Cain and Able but most of us would have to plead the 5th if confronted about our intake as the torchbearers of impunity during our college days.

I was in Hess for a year and a half as well. I wonder if our time over-lapped? I was there from August 1997 to December 1998. Spring semester 1998 I moved over to Andy Holt and lived there until the Spring semester of 2000 when I moved off campus.

Hess really was The Zoo. I have fond memories of playing golf in the hallway: trying to chip from the elevators to the stairs without hitting the ceiling or, most importantly, a sprinkler head. Or, sneaking girls into the room mission-impossible style. I have not-so-fond memories of the phantom trombone player who would blast his trombone out of a window and into the courtyard at all hours of the day and night. That is a big deal when you have to leave your windows open because there was no A.C. One night a group of about ten of us organized a search party to find that bastard and fanned out across the floors of Hess lynch mob style. We never found him, but word must have gotten around because the noises stopped.

All I can say is that you can die for this country at the age 18 then you should be able to pop a top on a cold one at age 18 case closed.
