Let me be clear. I do not care what Butch makes and I hope he stays. All I care about is that UT can maneuver financially down the road if he fails or if we find our "dream" coach.

He's selling us as much as the league office (actually, he's selling us on it a bit more):

We've made it very clear that Tennessee is the team we want," Harold Graeter, the Liberty Bowl's associate executive director, said Thursday. "We've been following Tennessee since Signing Day. ... We visited with (Tennessee coach Butch Jones) and (athletic director) Dave Hart throughout the spring, summer and fall. We went to five UT games. We've been very visible and very out front about the team we'd like to have. There's no secret about the team that we want."

[snip]

"It's the flagship university of the state, and they haven't played in our game in 28 years," Graeter said. "... . There's a huge base of alums in this part of the state. There are 9,000 UT Knoxville alums within 25 miles, so that's a substantial number of alumni here. Coming here would certainly dovetail what Butch is trying to do from a recruiting standpoint and it dovetails with the university trying to attract students from Memphis."

IOW, Liberty Bowl is saying: We're enormous Vol fans. We're not hiding that at all. Now here's why you should state your preference is to come here (insert pitch about alumni and recruiting both students and student athletes). The pitch to the conference office is "they are our flagship and haven't been here in 28 years!"

A countless amount of people get paid more than deserved all across this nation. What is one more? If it keeps the positive momentum with recruiting and stability pay the guy. So season tickets go up a few bucks a game. Many on here are making me think they are literally paying his salary! Mercy. Lol!

I'll put in my GUESS like all the other experts. I believe Butch will get a new extended contract in the 3.50 to 3.75 million range with some very nice incentives for bowl, SEC championship, or national championship goals met. His staff will also get raises and incentives.
As far as people that don't deserve raises or even being paid, Washington, DC is full of them.

I can't wait for the Michigan stuff to be behind us and be able to focus on the bowl and recruiting and the future of the program.

The good news is, once Michigan hires their coach, as long as it isn't Butch, we shouldn't have to worry about this again for a long time.

There is always something hanging over our heads. We should be excited to find out what bowl but...

:lolabove: Apropos.

I could care less what they pay Butch. That's the BOT, Hart and Cheek's business. I care a great deal about what happens on the field with this program that Butch controls. So whether they pay him 10 cents or 10 million it will not change what I want to see happen. If he is telling the truth he stays and does whatever it takes to get it done because he has everything he needs.. If he's just another in a long list losers he will move on to another "dream job". Somebody will "get it" and take advantage to the point they build a major legacy here. Hope it's Butch. If not, hope the next guy does.

Michigan clearly wants Jim Harbaugh, and he will have to definitively and emphatically tell them no. Harbaugh's situation is unusual in that he might be traded at the end of the year if he stays in the NFL. Not having control of where you land is a concern obviously for Harbaugh, according to sources.

If it's not Harbaugh then the Michigan search will get interesting and Butch Jones' name will show up more in discussions.

Dave Hart has made it clear that Butch is his guy and that they are working on an extension and a raise. There is no agreement at this point, which is not surprising given Jones' travels and the season just ending. But we know from sources in Michigan, Knoxville and in the ACC that Michigan's interest in Jones is legitimate, and the Wolverines have been vetting Jones.
