Fulmer Returning; Cut on Deck; Chavis in the Hole

I do not want to lose Cut. I do not think he will go to Duke...building a football program there would be more difficult than Coach K and basketball. Duke had a damn good reputation for bball before Coach K, although he has consistently kept it in the top 10. Many people who really follow bball would argue Coach K has done less with more talent, i.e. the number of McD all americans he lands, as compared to other schools and the results.
I won't knock Coach K, class act at a class school. I don't think Cut can turn that program around in 5 to 10 years, there is some overall improvement in ACC coaching too that would further impact his ability.
Stay at UT Cut, get us another SEC championship and playing ball with the big boys again.

This may be Cut's last chance at a head coaching position.

Well, Coach K was a youngster when he started there. Coach Cut is a wiley veteran, so he shouldn't need 15 years which would almost make him Bowden's age by then.

Prolly 5 years and Duke can challenge for the ACC title. After he does that, he'll take the job vacated by whichever new SEC coach flops (CUM, Saban, Miles, or Petrino). It won't be Fulmer... he's the dean and will leave whenever he gets good and ready. If he wants to keep Cut, he might agree to give him our program after we win yet another National Championship or after he's given it his best for another 5 or so years.

The Ol' Ball Coach himself only managed 8 wins when he won the ACC in 1989 (record = 8-4) and got drilled in the bowl game by Texas Tech. And that was in a conference w/o FSU, VT, BC, and Miami.

Duke is a BBALL school. Whoever they hire in football will be gone in 3 years...4 tops.

spoken like someone who knows nothing about football. the negative inertia of the Duke football program would be nearly unchangeable, except for some huge infusion of cash and new coach being Uber recruiter (which couldn't be any more antithetical to who CDC is). Basketball turnarounds are much easier by comparison because single players can make a huge difference. Football is a totally different animal.

Thanks for education. Based on its quality, tuition should be cheap! I like the shorter lectures that you give much better. Like this grand insight:

That's why he pushes them for a 5 year contract and if he gets fired he moves to the beach and doesn't worry about coaching again.

Since we all fancy ourselves as experts in college football and hope that someone at UT gains from our infinite wisdom, this thread is intended to collect some ideas for Mike Hamilton is figuring out how we can keep Coach Cutcliffe on the Hill.

My suggestion is that we structure some deal along the lines of the one FSU used to keep Jimbo Fisher. Given the anticipated popularity of this idea with other posters here, in the event you are somehow unaware of it, here's a copy of an article about the ingenious work of the FSU AD.

While we're at it, we need to show some love for Coach Chavis!

If Hamilton does this, of course, it would be the equivalent of throwing the finger midway between the pinky and the thumb at the negavol fans.

So, instead of coming here and calling me even more names, my simultaneous suggestion to you would be to join the negaGators. They have a winning record at firing coaches while you guys are winless. It would be like going from the Phins to the Pats.

Go Coach Cut! Go Vols!

OMG...he's back...

If he goes, that's the contract he'll get. And then after 4 yrs....when he's only won 8-10 games...he get his pink slip just like the last 4 coaches "Dook" has had since Spurrier left.

I would be willing to bet $5000 Cut is in much better health than Fulmer. Having by-pass surgery improves your health. I would say he is in better health than most people his age. The average Joe doesn't understand today's heart healthy methodology. Everyone thinks by-pass surgery is a bad thing.....truth is, most people could use it by age 60.

:eek:hmy: Reference? Maybe I've been wrong all the time! Can I quote you at Grand Rounds.

I'd rather get fired with a 5 year contract paying head coach type money than work for coordinator money.

To each his own. For me the extra money would not make up for the shame of being fired.

That's the reality of the situation from Cut's vantage point.

If we want Cut, we need to do something more than a pay raise.

Match the Duke deal with a "Head Coach in Waiting" title. If we've really got big money, now is the time to use it.

Throw Cut a nice going away party. Pat him on the back . . . and then get on the phone to Chris Hatcher ASAP.

If he takes the Duke job, it seems to me he's admitting he's not going to coach for more than 5 more yrs anyway. He's not going to turn Duke around. Four yrs and they'll show him the door too. Then, he would be a twice-fired HC and go out a loser.

He might want that, but it wouldn't be for me.

I don't know who the replacement phone call goes to first, but those are the basic options on Hamilton's desk tonight.

If you[re right. He'd be on the beach (or wherever he fancies) in retirement, loving life I would suspect. Who gives a crap about Duke's interests on this forum.

The question for UT is not whether or not he can turn the Duke program around, but wheter or not he is worth the investment it will take to keep him.

I'm a UNC alum...among other things. I don't care what happens to Dook either. I'm happy when they go 0-11.

Is he worth an investment to keep? I don't think so. If Chavis really is that jealous of Cut...as discussed in another thread, any compensation we shell out keep him will just make that worse. I, for one, don't want the drama. Cut's a decent OC, but he's not irreplacable.

Just my opinion
