Fulmer Returning; Cut on Deck; Chavis in the Hole

The difference between Jimbo Fisher and David Cutcliffe is that Jimbo has been considered a candidate for several high profile head coaching jobs. Cutcliffe is the second choice at Duke. There's no reason to worry about another school snatching him away. We don't need some ridiculous contract making him the heir apparent in order to keep him in Knoxville.

I would be willing to bet $5000 Cut is in much better health than Fulmer. Having by-pass surgery improves your health. I would say he is in better health than most people his age. The average Joe doesn't understand today's heart healthy methodology. Everyone thinks by-pass surgery is a bad thing.....truth is, most people could use it by age 60.

So you think it will soon become a popular elective surgery procedure?

Was their 'first choice' the guy who didn't get the offer last week?

This is a large part of the reson why I think Cut will take the Duke job if offered. Questions about his recruiting ability and health are going to limit his options and, at 53, he is within a couple of years of his age coming into question as well. His name has popped up in several rumor mills this year but he did not even get an official sniff from NC State last year after he went public with his interest in the job. If Cut really wants to be a hfc at a BCS school again this could be his last, best chance.

You could be right, but I sure hope he's not thinking like that.

Since we all fancy ourselves as experts in college football and hope that someone at UT gains from our infinite wisdom, this thread is intended to collect some ideas for Mike Hamilton is figuring out how we can keep Coach Cutcliffe on the Hill.

My suggestion is that we structure some deal along the lines of the one FSU used to keep Jimbo Fisher. Given the anticipated popularity of this idea with other posters here, in the event you are somehow unaware of it, here's a copy of an article about the ingenious work of the FSU AD.

While we're at it, we need to show some love for Coach Chavis!

If Hamilton does this, of course, it would be the equivalent of throwing the finger midway between the pinky and the thumb at the negavol fans.

So, instead of coming here and calling me even more names, my simultaneous suggestion to you would be to join the negaGators. They have a winning record at firing coaches while you guys are winless. It would be like going from the Phins to the Pats.

Go Coach Cut! Go Vols!

"Rut" and "Chief" will never ever be the HC here @ UT. That would be the biggest disgrace ever. If I had to pick one it'd be "Rut" but he can't get it done. Both have passed their prime in coaching and are on a slight downward slide.

If Philly would try he EASILY could get better coordinators in-here. More CREATIVE, take the dink and dump "O" outta here - no more two yard out's on 3rd and 8 an get rid of the beloved gives up over 400 yards per game Mustang.

He could try to bring back the OC who lead us to the 1998 title. Oh wait... that was Cut. Same thought on the DC side.. 1998 National Championship team. Oh wait.. that was, well, ya' know who, don't 'ya?

I think Cutcliffe is fine as a coordinator, but would it really be that devastating if he left? Despite the lack of turnover in Knoxville, Coordinators come and go all the time.

Depends on who the next coordinator is. Cutcliffe has definately brought an upgrade to an offense that barely averaged over 20 points per game (and 5-6 record) prior to him returning. The Vols now average over 30 points per game and returned to the SEC Championship game only 2 seasons removed from that dreadful 5-6 season.

yes, the Vols could hire a younger, not so past his prime coordinator.... like Randy Sanders

I wasn't all that excited when they re-hired OCDC. I thought at that time we had the opportunity to go out and find someone with a new offensive philosophy and energy and was kind of disappointed that Cutcliffe was coming back because that meant more of the same. Not to say he has not been a good OC for us, just thought it was time for something a little different. That freakin' no huddle...I dont like it. In situations ok, but we had a senior QB that has basically been playing 4 years, can he not read a defense? Thats the only reason I see going to that like we did, the O lines up, see what the D is showing, then step back and wait for the coach to call a play, sheesh, and it never accomplished what the no huddle is supposed to, i think it caused more confusion for our O than it did the opposing D. Anyway, Im done.

Smart people, indeed!

Let's just hope Cut doesn't start thinking about doing to Duke football what Coach K did to their basketball program. I'm sure he'd be great for them, but I want him to stay on the Hill!

Coach K has been at Duke for 30 years, and took him 15 to build Duke into a perennial power. Do you really think Cut would be at Duke for 15 years at his age?

Uh we were 74th out of 112 D-1 schools in total defense this year. Chavis did a pretty lousy job if you ask me. You really think Vandy has more talent on D than we do? Georgia Tech?

I'd like to get rid of chavis and get Muschamp or Tenuda.

Well, Coach K was a youngster when he started there. Coach Cut is a wiley veteran, so he shouldn't need 15 years which would almost make him Bowden's age by then.

Prolly 5 years and Duke can challenge for the ACC title. After he does that, he'll take the job vacated by whichever new SEC coach flops (CUM, Saban, Miles, or Petrino). It won't be Fulmer... he's the dean and will leave whenever he gets good and ready. If he wants to keep Cut, he might agree to give him our program after we win yet another National Championship or after he's given it his best for another 5 or so years.

I do not want to lose Cut. I do not think he will go to Duke...building a football program there would be more difficult than Coach K and basketball. Duke had a damn good reputation for bball before Coach K, although he has consistently kept it in the top 10. Many people who really follow bball would argue Coach K has done less with more talent, i.e. the number of McD all americans he lands, as compared to other schools and the results.
I won't knock Coach K, class act at a class school. I don't think Cut can turn that program around in 5 to 10 years, there is some overall improvement in ACC coaching too that would further impact his ability.
Stay at UT Cut, get us another SEC championship and playing ball with the big boys again.
