Now to get some debate going. I thought this was a good post in the fb forum.

Until Saturday night.

Put your bias aside whether you're on one side or the other. Look at the stats last season. Dobbs did have a higher completion percentage but had a higher turnover rate when compared to TDs and had no major victories. The popular opinion of the media was that Dobbs was behind the other two QBs not just behind Worley in the spring. So what decision is there to make other than to start the senior at that point?

People are saying they would've started Dobbs versus UF. Why? Really are you going to start anyone in that game after Worley's performance versus UGA. I know in hindsight some would but coming off that UGA game we thought we had a great chance and that Worley was the guy for the job.

Let's put aside our differences, we all want this team to be successful. Jones has made mistakes but I don't think the QB decision was one of them. Dobbs looks a lot better though and the offense looks like it will be a lot better going forward. That's not just a player adjustment, part of that is coaching. It's like we want to give one credit without acknowledging the other but it just doesn't work that way.

This. How quickly everyone forgets that Worley went 23 of 35 for 264 and 3 TDs at Georgia..

Dobbs was behind Worley and Ferguson in the Spring. He has probably never been behind Peterman in any sense other than being unavailable to take mop up reps.

Dobbs is what THIS team needs right NOW. He probably wasn't what they needed to start the season. The OL is the critical factor. Dobbs' ability to run made life easier on the OL. Pass rushers had to use more caution. His runs gave the OL's angles.

If you could wave the magic wand and make this OL better... then Worley is probably healthy and among the SEC leaders. Accuracy, game management, decision making, et al would be key. Right now... Dobbs ability to take off with the ball helps in critical ways.

Also makes you wonder if Dobbs had stepped in for the injured Worley at UGA, if we would've won.

But I don't really fault the coaches for that decision. Just how it goes; used to bad luck and tons of what ifs as a battered UT fan.

Yeah it is kinda similar.

I feel bad for Worley, but to me, it seems like Dobbs' mobility gives us a more dynamic offense, and thus, a better chance at winning. So I hope we see Dobbs the rest of the way. Plus it helps build for the future, especially since the red shirt is gone.

But I gotta trust that the coaches know what they're doing and will play whoever they feel will get us the Ws and get us to a bowl.

I think it's like this. Worley's gone at the end of this year no matter what. They will only have Peterman and Dobbs with any experience at all to start next year. I think Jones is trying very, very hard to make sure they have Dobbs AND Peterman to start next season.

You want a quality backup. I know Peterman isn't super highly thought of, but injuries happen. Pure guess by me, but I'm thinking they'd like to redshirt Jennings and probably Dormady as well. That's not going to be possible if one of them is the only option at number two on the depth chart.

Peterman's been a solidly loyal guy, but I'm sure Jones doesn't feel like testing that too much.

I think it's pretty obvious Peterman doesn't have a future as a professional football player.

Next year he will be a classroom senior. So you would think he would just go ahead and stick around and finish his degree instead of transferring elsewhere. But who knows.

It was said Jones promised Dobbs's parents that he would redshirt him. After being literally the last option, they burned his redshirt last year.

It was reported earlier (maybe this week) that his parents gave Jones the OK to burn the redshirt again this year.

It's not just what the coaches want. They are also trying to respect the wishes of the players and parents as well. See Maggitt last year.

I think my favorite play of the game was JRM chasing down the Alabama RB and popping the ball loose and the fumble recovery on the goal line to keep Alabama from scoring late in the game. That is a great indication of the culture shift this team has gone through from Dooley to Jones. If this is Dooley's team, the defense just watches with their hands on their hips as the guy strolls into the endzone to further embarrass us. Glad to see that kind of fight in our guys. That will pay off big time in the near future.

That was #23 Sutton with the FF, not JRM. Then JRM made a great play on the fumble recovery. :hi:

Well there is the diploma thing. :) (Imagine blue font).

Borrowing from Glichtenwalter:
My UT diploma is my birth certificate.
Plus my Dad didn't have a high school education and he was a Vol fan for over 60 years. He also had a TN birth certificate.
Much better than being a Vandy troll like some posters.

With talent Kiffin calls a good game. I will say this. Rebuilding in the context of playing the best opposition is the only way to do it. Beginning to see that a break through may be possible. I think going with Worley and senior leadership was the right call at the beginning of the season. Seems like the gears have been shifted. Love to see the Vols run the table.

This is a good post. I agree - Worley's leadership was needed at the beginning of the season. He worked hard over the summer to get better and he did get better. I think Worley got hurt more than we guessed at UGA. I agree also that we've shifted gears and I liked what I saw from Dobbs and company against Bama. I think his confidence inspired the rest of the O and I look forward to Saturday - Team 118 doesn't know how to quit. Winning is coming...:)

I think Dobbs parents want him to get 5 years of free school. It seems to me they really have their (and Josh's) head on right and are planning to have no NFL future. What he's studying requires lots of degrees (which aren't cheap) to practice professionally. By taking summer classes, he can have a bachelors in 3 years. Get a fifth year from redshirting, and you're a master's degree or mostly through a PhD with no student loan debt to pay off later in life. It's smart on his parents part to try to redshirt him, but that's all gone now, and his mobility gives us the best chance to win with this line.

True, but if IIRC then Tennessee let's former players come back to school for free anyways. I know auburn does, and I'm sure there's plenty of other SEC schools that do it.

Its all good. I was a Vol fan long before the honor of a degree was bestowed.

How can you effectively evaluate a quarterback like Dobbs in practice with a red no-contact jersey on?

I would think it would be hard. It's clear he doesn't have the accuracy he needs yet. Missing on the slant to North was a big one. Worley likely hits that if he reads it fast enough. He's also still turning the ball over with one pick and one fumble.

On the other hand, maybe North isn't even open if Worley is in, the QB running really softened that defense.

I posted this over in the Football Forum and wanted some feedback from you guys:

The Worley-Dobbs situation reminds me of the Matt Simms-Tyler Bray situation. The younger QB in both cases shows more promise, while the older QB had limitations but was a a warrior. The older QB was used through the toughest part of the schedule and then the younger QB was unleashed during the final part of the schedule. Remember we were 2-6 when Bray got his first start and we made it to a bowl. Hopefully the same will ring true for Dobbs this year!

Somewhat accurate comparison, IMO.:good!:

Same.

Saturday night, I watched the game back in East TN with a bunch of folks I grew up with. I went to grad school at Arizona, and had to defend my Vol status (even though I was the only one who actually has a degree from UT).

But then...those folks went nuts watching every effin' second of the game. Every. Damn. Second.

A degree is a piece of paper. Being a hardcore Vol fan is something else entirely.

I could care less if people actually went to UT or not. As long as you wear orange and you hate Alabama, you're good with me.

Morning, Gentlemen!

Is it safe to enter? I didn't graduate from UT so am I still considered a fan?

I don't like soccer but I'm going to give the English Premier League a whirl...they don't have such stringent standards...wanna be a Liverpool....?....? whatever with me girl?

Worley is still listed as starter on the depth chart released this morning. But I doubt that that is really legitimately meaningful at this point.

Although I'm not a proponent of our QBs getting hit in practice, I just don't feel his strengths are best seen unless everybody is going full speed and his elusiveness when the play breaks down can be displayed

Heck yeah. We'll even take reformed fans of other SEC teams as long as they promise not to flop back. It's OK, sinners, there's plenty of room at the Church of Neyland. :)
