Donnieball Taking Shape!

That would have been determined on three things Hubbs stepping up.....Richardson being the player from the tourney and if Zo could have gotten some experienced bigs during the late signing period. It definitely could have happened but it wasnt the logical expectation and I feel the talent level was higher his first yr on campus. I think Zo knew this and played into him leaving for Cal.

I disagree, but that's ok

You've used this argument a lot "sunshine pumping" and yes it is truthful, people want to believe.

I do believe you have gone out of your way to counter the Sunshine Pumping Mentality. Which is ok, but extreme at times which puts everybody on the defense.

I have a paypal account if you want to float me a dollar.

Only if you're gonna pay me back 2

This. Everyone is giving Butch so much props because of how well he has recruited and turned the roster around in so short of time. I still think the football team only goes 6-6 next year but Football takes a lot longer to turn around. So far he is doing and saying all the right things and it's awesome to have a coach that bleeds orange so much. The previous two, Kiffin and Dooley you could tell they could careless about UT and the tradition. I fell super confident in both of our coaches and I think things are finally looking up again!

I completely understand the recruiting part, and he's absolutely killing it, but at some point you have to win. 6-6 would be progress and a great sign IMO, 5-7 and I'm gonna start getting skeptical, 4-8 and I will honestly worry.

Maybe that bothers some people, but it's my honest opinion.

I think thats a good look. Nice Post.

I'm not saying this to bash coach martin, but who can honestly say they felt this much excitement about Tennessee BB, after this short time when Coach martin arrived. Just Saying

I will worry with 4-8 and 5-7 but I also dont feel that u realize just how far down Dooley had drug the program. If this was another era or another conference than I would feel differently but the SEC is extremely stacked right now and OOC is strong too.

I just meant I disagree about him thinking he had a 15-17 win team next season as to why he left.

He may not have but I feel it played into it. He had pretty much two wasted recruiting classes with Stokes going pro and then his next two is not exactly looking special. It would have taken a heck of a coaching job to get us back in the tourney and if he had of been able to do it would have gained my respect some.

I agree and understand all of that, but IMO a high level coach will win a few he maybe wasn't picked to each year, or won't lose games he shouldn't.

Anyways, this isn't the fball forum, sorry guys.

Comparing apples to oranges.

With the grad transfer market, and coaching changes allowing so many kids out of LOI's, he likely would've added a few more pieces to next years squad.

I know this opinion also won't be popular, but I've heard he really encouraged Jarnell to go pro, and informed Jarnell about Cal. He made it clear that regardless of Marquette or Cal he was unlikely to be the coach at Tennessee next year. So it's at least possible that if Martin had been full Tennessee Jarnell would've also returned.

Water under the bridge at this point, and no worries if we don't agree. I just maintain that I was not one who thought next year was a 15 win year under Zo so that all of a sudden makes it ok for Tyndall, I expected a pretty good year next season.

You had a post where you stated ALL coaches lose games they shouldn't...we're you posting a riddle?

If that's the case them that means that he was recruiting a player for cal on UT's dime..... How can u be ok with that?

How did you get "Martin was recruiting to Stokes to Cal" out of the above post?

Stokes wouldn't have been released to Cal anyway. No current player would have been released to Cal.

By your logic, DT recruited players to UT on USM's dime.

Didn't mean stokes.....I meant the king.....if that happened with stokes then that means that he recruited the king on tenn dime for another program.

Martin didn't know he was going to actually get the Cal job. He was recruiting for U.T. until he signed with Cal. It was possible that U.T. was going to be Martin's best option until Cal hired him.

This thread has wandered so far off course it should retitled BTO and Everybody Else on Whatever.

Back to the regularly scheduled programming. Are we excited about Donnieball or not? I am excited because I love the offensive and defensive philosophies even better than Pearl's. I believe he has recruited to those philosophies and the remaining roster fits as well. FWIW Pearl is the gold standard to compare coaches at UT. Until another one makes the Elite 8 and 6 tournaments in a row - his tenure is it. I believe Donnie's system will produce much improvement.

Zo is not even in the conversation. Mediocre at best floor coach. Stuck in a box of his own making until he had no other options. Fortunate for him he had two future NBA players as go to guys. Happy he left Richardson, Hubbs and Moore. I will not trash his recruiting - some talented players came to UT during his time and they are three of them. Some dogs as well. It was the Zo system that I did not care for at all.

That's not what BTO just said

Stokes wanted to know if Martin was going to come back. Martin couldn't make that promise so Stokes left. That seems pretty easy to comprehend.

There was no guarantee the Martin was going to get the Cal job, just like there was guarantee he was going to get the Marquette job. At the same time, Martin couldn't guarantee he was going to be back and he couldn't guarantee that he was leaving.
