BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

What is says: "Cuonzo Martin has taken his name out of consideration for the Marquette job."
What it means: Marquette told him they chose someone else.

We've all seen this before. It's the same old baloney that always shows up in the media when a school interviews several candidates. It can only choose one, so each of the others candidates is allowed to save face by saying he withdrew his name before the school announces who it has hired. Non-selected candidates can then leverage the supposed interest from another institution to leverage a pay raise at his current job.

Whatever the reason, he's still our coach and will be for some time. Now let's go get some recruits, fresh off our great run to end the season

Let's hope that Martin or our School says it, and not some "source".

I hope everyone of these "were heading in the right direction" folks eat the biggest pile of crow imaginable. This hurts worse than anything UT basketball related since Izzo beat us in the elite 8

You Memphis fans need to realize that you will have to play Martin in the future years and he will beat you when we play.

I hope people don't act like jackasses if he decides to stay. The guy has never done anything to embarrass the university and his players keep their nose clean for the most part. If he comes back, he deserves our support until he proves otherwise. Time will tell.

He's earned my support. We will be attending games next season. I always said that if the product improved then I will buy tix, otherwise my budgeted money would have to go to other prioritized areas. But, due to the improvement then we will be back. We should be alright next year. Also, I always felt that players under Bruce didn't develop as they should a la Hopson. But under Martin these guys have matured. Examples, Stokes and Richardson are much better since their frosh seasons.

I'm not saying that a coach can't be interested in another school. You can have your agent talk to their agent, whatever.

But to actually go interview there, when you have a healthy raise and extension offer waiting at your present employer, is pretty telling.

So, you're saying that Martin gets it?

I've long suspected that the last several years have created something like an opiate addiction to coaching drama/coaching searches/coaching rumors for part of the UT fan base.

This doesn't exactly change that.

Sure, claim "we coulda had Marshall/Shaka/Howland/etc!!!" all you want. I think if your honest, we all know how that search would've went.

A little continuity in the UTAD is not a bad thing.

well most sport's analysts have projected next years squad as an NIT team, much like they projected this years team as a sweet 16 type of team. If stokes leaves...may be real nasty.

So, you use those analysts to support your argument now, but going back to Martin's first year, those analysts are idiots and Martin underachieved? God, you anti Martins are so pathetic.

Disappointing and surprising. Martin will remain a mediocre coach, now with less talent at his disposal. I really thought it was in Martin's and UT's best interest for them to part ways.

I'd say surprising for me. I thought he would bolt and I really wouldnt blame him in a way.
Disappointing would be a little strong. The sweet 16 is the sweet 16. I don't care who you beat to get there. There are several powerhouse schools watching UT play Michigan that lost to the same type of teams that UT beat.
That said Martin and his staff have plenty of questions and holes to fill to prove they have long term staying power. They may prove not worthy of the spot but he's earned the right to decide for himself IMO.

This doesn't mean that Cuonzo is staying. There are other jobs open. It won't be official until he signs an extension.

If he does stay, I would say he's put himself in an even worse light with the fan base. The fans will have even a shorter fuse if/when he has a lackluster/non-tournament season next year. My personal feeling is we've put ourselves in a worse position next year if we miss the tournament again.

I was not confident in the athletic department's competence to conduct a coaching search for a replacement. If we weren't going to get Marshall or an equally decorated coach, then we are probably best if we stick with what we've got. Martin still has several question marks around his coaching ability, but we have certainly seen that he is capable in stretches. If he finds a way to have consistency, then we will be glad we kept him. Also, he is a high character guy. Great ambassador for the University.

No. I didn't expect a big name but the sooner the better IMO. What's the point of this clown producing mediocre results like he has since he stepped foot on campus? If we countered Marquette and went ridiculous, this is a huge mistake.

I understand that some people who live in Tennessee want Tennessee sports to fail. What i don't understand is unless they are fans of the minor schools in Tennessee, fans of other SEC teams, or are have some mental problems. For Tennessee or any other school not to retain a coach who had just reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAAT would have future negative associations with our University which would doom our entire Athletic Program. It is time to take a stand against those who's intent is to destroy Athletics.

Hopefully the majority of the fans will get behind Martin and support the program and the team. The past is the past we can move forward building on a great season.

@wesrucker247: BREAKING: Cuonzo Martin has taken his name out of consideration for the Marquette job: ***BREAKING: Cuonzo Martin news***

What this means is Marquette has selected someone else - or wasn't interested after falling asleep during Coach Martin's interview. :) Standard procedure is to quickly "remove" your name from consideration.

The fact that he was up there interviewing tells me everything I need to know.

I'll give you that we made the preseason 25 in that particular poll, but it still doesn't even scratch the scope of your statement "most sports analysis indicated we would be a Sweet 16 team." Nor do I see NIT predictions for next year's team at this point. (Not saying people couldn't say that, just haven't seen any proof.)

Auburn fans have gotten crazy in the last two weeks. I can hardly wait for Pearl to get his next "show cause" evaluation.

These are all strawman posts. Cuonzo hasn't been in any danger of getting fired for weeks. Any leaving or staying over the past 48 hours have been entirely up to him.

Maybe this was Hart's thinking as well. "They won't let me go get anybody any better so let's stick with what we've got. Besides Tennessee fans are so loyal they'd come over and buy tickets to a crap festival if we put an orange blazer on it. Where's the insentive to change?"

Nice, really didn't think money was gonna be a "main factor", if that makes sense. I assume Marquette and Tennessee would be comparable money, but that there was tension between Tennessee and Martin.

So it sounds like Hart really wanted to keep him?

Tennessee brass were hoping to not have to go through another coaching change. Haslam really likes Cuonzo also.

Sounds like from talk this morning, situation at Marquette not to good right now and I suspect that had influence with Martin.

I think Martin has picked up on a lot of his weaknesses as a coach and will get them shored up with haste. I also think fans are expecting somewhat of a down year anyway based on talent. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if next year looks a lot like his first year. We'll be picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC. We could very well have a solid year and have a shot at getting in the tournament much to the surprise of the "experts". If that happens, I think the fans will be glad we stuck with him.
