Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

LOL at only going up because of catering to women.

Do a little research on fantasy football. The NFL spent tons of money to push fantasy football because it creates interest for the casual fan in numerous games per week. Vested interest in more teams than just your local = higher viewership. Which = bigger tv deals.

As for the sudden boost in soccer, that can be directly correlated to an increase in money spent on marketing, as well as the building of soccer specific stadiums which enhances the fan experience, also they are now willing to spend the money to bring in and keep talent in MLS.

Also, new cable packages make it much easier to view games from leagues around the world.

Every point here is exactly spot on.

I understand it's not the bulk of a team's revenue but nobody is going to ignore that kind of money walking out the door. Every revenue stream counts. And after the shared TV money, that is the next biggest stream, followed by merchandise sales.

But if whatever they're doing is skyrocketing TV revenue, they're not going to jeopardize it just to pump up the small percentage of potential revenue at stadiums. Estimates are they'll be at 17B from TV revenue in the next few years. Stadium revenue is maybe 1B? Worst, unrealistic case is it drops to 1/2B? If their strategy increases TV revenue by 10B over the next decade at the expense of 1/2B stadium revenue, I think they'll take that.

My version is probably hot true authentic. It is basically a really simplified chili served over pasta with tons of cheddar and sour cream

1 pound beef
1 chopped onion
1 TBS chili powder
2 cans kidney beans, drained
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 tsp salt, or to taste

Simple, but good. A nice taste of home, just had it last week
Pinch of brown sugar

It may not be the 10 years Cuban is talking about, but if you understand the life cycle of any business or industry you know that cash accumulates in the maturity phase, which is right as the decline starts unless the business can find a way to move back toward the growth cycle. Which takes the excess cash to move it there. How many greedy owners and players and agents and support personnel want to see that happen? None.

JMO, but the NFL is obviously counting on the expansion of the product into new markets as well as with overall population growth. Meanwhile its underpinnings in the American school systems are undermined by cutting costs and PE programs to go with legal and safety concerns at every level. So the product on the field will suffer down the road. Add in the safety issues and increased regulation (officials/rule changes/replays).

On the oversaturation issue - I liked the Andy Griffith show. But when it started coming on every day I stopped watching. It was the same story told a little differently every day. The vast majority of NFL "fans" are bandwagon. Just how much football do you expect a marginal fan to watch? Add in the college and high school product being televised. Add in the ridiculous cost of a ticket, parking, food, etc. Add in the ridiculous crap in some of their personal lives that gets broadcast infinitum in the media looking to talk about something, anything to get ratings. At some John Q public is going to move on past it all just like they are with the reality music contest shows with Idol, Voice, X-Factor, etc. Boredom sets in.

Is it going to replace soccer as a worldwide leader when kids can play that sport at such a low cost without having to be super human physical specimen? Personally, I cannot stand soccer, much less watch it in person or on TV. But I also realize the economies of the sport and that it is hugely popular worldwide. That does not mean John Q. Public is unable to love many sports. It does mean that all of those sports will have to compete for the disposable dollars in my pocket. Which is the point. As all those sports become more popular worldwide the NFL will no longer control those disposable dollars.

Haha, apparently I needed to be more specific.

TV ratings don't lie. Companies put their faith 100% in Neilson, and their advertising dollars drive decisions. Whatever the NFL is doing raises TV ratings, and as a business, that's the smart thing to do.

i am not sure which is my favorite - comparing a college football poll to a Neilsen TV rating - or bringing up soccer as something that is going to compete with the NFL

MLS TV annual revenue is 40,000,000
NFL is 5,000,000,000

total revenue for MLS 500,000,000

total for NFL is 11,000,000,000

this discussion cracks me up

Agree on the numbers. Disagree on their certainty. Where will programming, cable, streaming, etc. be in 10 -20 years. Don't have the answer, but I expect that advertisers will be looking at different methods of pushing their products down the road.

This is true... But TV is the future, besides Jerryworld, look for future stadiums to be smaller in capacity with more luxury areas. They will try to create a more intimate experience for the fans to attract people to come to the games.

even in Jerryworld there is a focus on enhancing fan experience over just having a ton of seats - while stadium revenue is dwarfed by TV revenue - that revenue that does come from the stadium is mainly from the luxury seats, corporate boxes, etc - they need the normal fans to have a gameday environment but they don't need 100,000 - 60-70K will do just fine

And more exclusive. Only a rich-man's game and a shadow of what it once was. This is the reason I tend to agree with Cuban. "Intimate" and "exclusive" will eventually choke out the game to some extent.

So you choose to ignore over 5.5 B people on this planet who could care less about the NFL - the majority of which care a great deal about soccer? That cracks me up as well.

It'll be interesting to see what the numbers are 100 years from now. Forbes currently lists Manchester United and Real Madrid as the most valuable franchises in sports. Its possible the top 2 most valuable clubs 100 years from now could be NYCFC and LAFC.

The chili sauce itself is flavored with cinnamon, it's an acquired taste.

I assumed the other poster was talking about popularity in the US - since he mentioned rise of soccer in this country

this is why I used US figures and used the MLS - the rest of this world certainly doesnt care about the MLS

they care as much about the NFL as the normal US sports fan cares about the Bundesliga - my guess is those #s might move a couple of percentage points but in 30 years when my son is my age the same thing will be true - Bundesliga very low in US in popularity, NFL huge - NFL very low internationally, Bundesliga huge
