Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Early in the year, they were awful some games and good in others. No consistency, no discernible game plan, not very good defense. Hard to watch and really frustrating. The last 8 or so games, they have been really good on both ends of the floor. Not really sure why the sudden change, but I read that some of the players said they were playing hard for Cuonzo to keep his job. For the record, I didn't sign the petition. Had they maintained the pace they were on, I don't believe Cuonzo would have survived. As it is, they got it going just in time. Doesn't really matter why.

I'm aware what the early season looked like. As frustrating as it was, I don't think its 100% at Martin's feet. In October, on paper you have a healthy Maymon and a mature Stokes ruling the pain, Barton running point better than Golden, Richardson locking down on defense, Hubbs blowing up and being a sniper, and McRae scoring like mad. They look every bit like a deep run tournament team.

EDIT: Completely forgot about the anticipation about Hubbs.

Once the season actually gets here, it becomes painfully obvious that Stokes still has plenty to work on, Barton has to grow into a role he hasn't played, McRae has to accept and learn how to run the offense through the paint, and Mayon has 3 times more rust that anybody had expected. Its been a hell of a process to get this team to play like they're capable, and to get out of their own way mentally. I realize they cut it way too close, but they were thousands of miles out of the Tournament when the season started.

That's why I don't think its as simple as them sensing Martin's job was on the line and all of the sudden playing hard.

I was asked to go to Ohio once to install satellites for a month about 30 miles north of Chillicothe. We had work orders every day all around that area. On my 30th day there, I realized not a single person had offered me a sandwich or even a pepsi the whole time i was there. 4 jobs a day minimum. So i had been in over 120 homes. On the last day this old lady said.. "You want a sandwich or something to drink honey?" I immediately said Thank God! I was beginning to lose faith in humanity. You're in someones attic or crawl space for 2 and a half hours and hospitality never crosses their mind. I sat with her and had lunch. Guess where she was from? Vols B**ch!!

The story.
It is cool

And I love Cincinnati style chili

... And Robert Hubbs was not going to have a "one and done" type of season

Excellent synopsis of the season Wally. The players for the most part look like they are a year ahead of where they were early in the season. They are playing much better as a team and the defense looks to be as good as any in the country. I believe winning by using CCM's system is making believers out of the team. Just like in football, defense wins championships.

I also love Cincinnati style chili. It's taken a while for my wife to appreciate it. It helped her to think of it as sauce and not chili.

When it comes to food, nomenclature has never gotten in the way of me enjoying a good meal.

And I'll say this. Tournament play above all else is about matchups and solid D...

It is about matchups, it is about solid D, but its also about elite guard play(specifically the PG). If Richardson and Barton continue to play at a high level we have a chance against everyone we play. Stokes will get his double doubles. The problem is the level of competition is fixing to get turned up a couple notches. Hopefully our guys will rise to the occasion.

Offer went out yesterday to 2017 Peachtree Ridge DB DeAngelo Gibbs nephew of Dale Carter @Delo923: I want to thank God for allowing me to pick up my 6th offer from The University of Tennesse #VolNation

What is this Cincinnati style chilli you all speak of? I googled it, and it looks like spaghetti sauce and noodles, loaded up with cheese. My taste buds are somewhat intrigued.... :detective:

Meh. Not digging Skyline. It's too ... umm ... brown sugary for me.

I love Gold Star, though. I get a 5 way every time I layover at the Cinci airport.

I guess I would think you would show some kind of gradual improvement if it was all of this. I am sure there were several factors. It seems like they flipped a switch and started playing a totally different brand of basketball. That was more my point. I am glad they are winning. Like I said, it doesn't really matter why at this point.

Yeah. I think it is the cinnamon in the Skyline that turns my tastebuds off.

Yes, cinnamon in chili.

Acquired taste for sure. It is usually either a love or hate experience.

If you grew up in Cincinnati, most people come to like it the older they get. Or, they remain steadfast in their hate of it.

We have 2 inches of snow !!! Wow , glad it was not more. I like J-rich's game. He has had a nice run in the tourney. However I would think he has to be more consistent next year to get drafted in the first 2 rounds. His defense is usually pretty solid. If he continues to grow on offense he could make quite the impact next season.
