Official Global Warming thread (merged)

It's got to be worldwide. We need worldwide leadership, not appeal to nationalism and American (or Chinese) exceptionalism.

Blah blah blah that sounds good in theory but it doesn’t work in real world applications . We can’t agree on what color the sky is in this country then we (USA , China and Russia ) can’t agree to stop screwing each other over , the EU can’t decide where to send or take in the next wave of immigrants , the Middle East will give the finger to everyone because well the West is Satan and India is well going to do what they want . But we are going to do something that’s never been done before and reduce the global emissions by 45% and still don’t know if that’s enough to stop the climate from changing because we will have to keep a net zero status ? Yeah ok .

Kind of sounds like exactly what we need? If humans are terrible for the planet, it stands to reason anything that would eliminate humans is a positive. Maybe we should stop sending aid to places where life cannot be easily sustained and let nature do what it does best.

Honest question.

If they found dinosaur bones in places like Canada wouldn't that mean that Canada used to be a lot hotter than it is today? Is it Possible that the Earth is just returning to its normal climate?

That’s the question I keep asking.
And what would the ideal temperature be?

Tell that to the framers of the Paris Treaty that gave China and India a blank check to pollute as much as they wanted for the next twenty years.

Canada, along with the average temperature of Earth, was warmer than it is today, and it also was colder, then warmer, then colder, etc.
Climate fluctuates through glacial (cooler) and interglacial (warmer) periods during Ice Ages. We are currently in an Ice Age (I forget it's name) since glaciers and polar ice caps are present. We've been in an interglacial period (Holocene) for about 12,000 years.

I thought the ice age ended "not too long ago"

Very interesting story. Hope it spurs some debate by candidates in 2020. We need smart people to work on this, not the usual numbskulls.
Pipe dream. even if the developed countries had the tech, we don't, and could deploy it in time, we don't have the time, the poor nations can't do what is needed. Besides the fact that we don't have the tech, and can't implement it in time, giving it to the poor nations wouldn't work. they don't know how, or have the resources, to maintain or use, plus any of the crazies that would blow it up because of the great satan and they don't want to see change. We would have to forcibly invade and control every country to have any chance of implementing and maintaining the tech we don't have.

This is a neat proof of concept. Wonder how much operational costs will be compared to what they bring in and resell for recycling?

A 2,000 foot-long floating pipe nicknamed Wilson is about to start its mission to collect all the plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Last month, the Ocean Cleanup foundation launched the world's first ocean cleanup system out of San Francisco to take on the notorious "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," a giant floating trash pile between San Francisco and Hawaii that is twice the size of Texas. It's the largest of five ocean trash piles on Earth.

The pipe is set to arrive at its destination in the ocean on Tuesday and begin the cleanup process soon after, according to a company spokesperson.

The pipe, which is in the shape of a U, features a 3-meter deep net underneath it to trap floating plastic under the water's surface. A boat will return to the spot every couple of months to remove the debris -- like a garbage truck for the ocean -- and return it to shore. The goal is to recycle the plastic and create new products.
