Memphis Players

Somebody please name all the great players from Memphis at any school over the last 15 years then compare to cities closer to Knoxville like Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte. It's not a knock on the city but as far as college football goes it's a fact. Memphis is not a great city for high school talent like it may have once been.

Ed 'To Tall' Jones was a Tennessee boy and Lynn Swann was born in Alcoa.... SOB, did not know that...

Quote this again because this is fact..

They can recruit all they want I'm just saying for Tennessee recent history shows we will be better off using our resources elsewhere. Even Ole Miss which gets the majority of "elite" Memphis talent has no one outstanding from Memphis on their roster.

What did he actually do at Tennessee? It's close

I think Cottam was basically on the injured list for a couple years in the NFL. Did he actually play?

Your in the minority that thinks Tenn is better off using their resources else where.. But this argument or debate has already been debated many times here on VN
.. But Memphis is Tennessee and always will be and Memphis kids will continue to be recruited there

Maybe so but in 3 years since Butch has been here we've signed a total of 2 players from Memphis. Jason Carr (gone) and Drew Richmond. That's what 3-4% of our signees. It's just not a great recruiting area right now. Nashville is light years better and that's where we will focus in state on. Peace........

You've lost credibility with the mention of the Cottam brothers, David Ligon, and Chris Walker.

Ligon was a starting center at UT. Both of the Cottam brothers contributed to the offense, especially Brad who was one of Ainge's favorite targets. Chris Walker was at UT during the turmoil years including Fulmer's firing, Kiffin's one season, and Dooley's first year. Walker is a VFL, was an outspoken senior leader for the 2010 team, and he had an outstanding senior season despite all of his injuries that he had come down with through the years.

We have had success in rural West Tennessee and Jackson...can you say Al Wilson and Kacy Rodgers...so maybe we concentrate on that area west of the Tennessee River.

Agreed Chris Walker was a classic tweener DE/LB. He absolutely laid one of the most bone crushing hit that knocked out the ole miss QB on a pick six at Neyland.

Look! Memphis, due to its proximity, might as well be in another state. It is closer for a parent to attend their son's game in Fayetteville, Ole Miss, Birmingham, Tuscoloosa, Starkville, Nashville or Columbia, MIssouri than for a parent to drive to Knoxville for a game.
From Memphis to Nashville is 199 miles and from Nashville to Knoxville is 180 miles. That is damn near 400 miles.

The it's far away logic is lost on me when we clearly recruit many players >380 miles away.

Agreed...we recruit guys from Cali so that isn't the issue...not even an issue as far as students from Memphis at UT because they are plentiful...it starts with the hs coaches who try and "sell" their players to other schools and have no loyality to any except maybe Ole Sis and Tiger High...and it starts with very poor coaching in the schools down there. No Quarles or Rankins in Shelby Co.

I don't understand where you are trying to go with any of this. What is the "it" that starts with HS coaches allegedly selling football recruits? You want HS coaches to be loyal to UT? Hugh Freeze coached locally so it comes as a complete shock to me that he would have inroads with local coaches and players.
