Knox radio guys questioning Butchs personailty

18-22 year olds are going to do stupid things. However, when those stupid things involve breaking well established team rules, violate the law, or embarrass the program, it comes time to put the team on notice. Sadly, it seems when it rains, it pours.

If they can learn from their mistakes & take the disciplinary requirements, they will be better men and players. And if they cannot value the opportunity they are given, or do not have the maturity to grow up, we do not need them. That goes for the 5 stars to the walk-ons. Nobody is irreplaceable.

Personally, I am tired of talking heads on the radio acting like they know everything, and stirring up morons in the fan base who just do not get it.

Yeah...Butch needs to lighten up on the players. If all these candy a$$ players leave we'll never win championships.

We don't know what goes on in the lockeroom but man it seems like players are always leaving anymore. Don't understand why there is so much of a turnover with players in the program the last few years.

Because the culture has changed. The cry baby days are over. Butch is an A$$ kicker and name taker. He's a fiery coach and work horse players will respond to that. The ole gray cloud has lifted over Neyland!

Most people who've played for Saban didn't like him either...however they did enjoy playing for a national championship and making it to the NFL. If they can't take the heat they should leave

I know the newer postes are going to lynch me for this, but I swear it seems like the younger generation is either weak as @#$# or very easily offended. The HBO segment on the "everyone gets a trophy" generation is pretty damn telling.

Butch is the type of coach who takes practice and academics seriously. It's nice to have a coach who actually gives a rats a** about his players' behavior. Butch's theory is more like, "You either try your best or leave this football team." That's the way I see it and there's nothing wrong with that.

I agree, and I want a coach who keeps players in check. I don't want to get to the end of the season and something come up about a player that may cost wins.

I doubt Butch is out there "attacking players". There's a world of difference between telling a player he's a piece of sh!t and telling a player he's playing like sh!t.

Malzahn is no saint, by the way. I can assure you of that. He gets after it with the best of them.

Yeah Nash, there should be double spit flyin' on Auburns bench this year after adding that screamer from Florida.

Now that the talent and expectations are there, he is turning it up a notch, nothing wrong that... as you said:hi:

Butch made this very point in his introductory conversation with the team after being hired. I don't recall his comments verbatim, but he said essentially that the one thing that he never wants to be guilty of is not coaching his players hard enough, in order to extract the very best that they are capable of.

Part of it stems from the unrealistic expectation that, as freshmen, they will all step into immediate and significant playing time. Very few of them have the patience to realize that a redshirt can be a very good thing in terms of personal development.

Pretty sure nobody gives a damn that saban is a jerk because he wins. Players coaches like fulmer cant cut it these days, not with the social media driven superstar attitudes alot of these kids arrive with. Ive said it before and il say it again, lots of people around here seem to think butch is the nicest guy in the world because hes a PR specialist and a media darling but im willing to bet behind closed doors hes every bit as controlling as saban. Things go his way or youre gone, just ask jay graham. Thats not a bad thing at all though and im glad thats the way he is. We will be a better team because of it.

It's just todays generation of kids. I manage 33 people and about 10-15 of them are 25 or younger. There's not a day goes by that I don't get one of the younger ones come into my office to whine about the way their supervisor speaks to them. I always ask questions like did they call you names or curse at you? 99.9% of the time they so no, they just don't like the tone their immediate supervisor takes with them. It really blows my mind how sensitive some young people are these days. I had a guy 2 weeks ago.almost passed out because I was disciplining him for being disrespectful to his superior. He felt overwhelmed...yes I'm in the military and I'm probably the most calm person at work. Kids are just snot bubblers these days

How about running them like dogs and denying them water? Read the Junction Boys sometime if you haven't already.

I read it but also lived it. Played HS ball in the 60's and every HS coach in the south ran fall camp just like Bear. He was their role model. 2 x 21/2 hour sessions in August heat with no water was the rule. Small wonder they didn't kill more of us than they did. Glory days :)

Your talking out of your a$$. In fact, im offended. You are so racist for using the L word knowing the connotations. I need to go to my safe space and make sure I do not commit any micro aggressions on the way there.

Oh, I forgot one other interesting thing they said.
They claimed that Butch has only one style and that some kids respond better to less harsh treatment.
They said that he would be more successful by changing his approach with certain personalities.
They said that Butch is such a great recruiter because he is a super nice guy to the recruit/families but when the player gets on campus Butch changes into a mean hard a**.

If it is true that Martin started talking disrespectful crap to the CEO in front of the team, there can only be one response. "Don't the the door hit you on the way out." Under no circumstances can you let that type of insubordination go unchecked. You will be the next Derek Dooley if you do.

Now, maybe it is true that Butch could approach different personalities in different ways. But, you can't let some weak minded player get away with unacceptable behavior just because they can't take any heat. And you certainly can't allow disrespect and insubordination under any circumstance.

Coach Weathers at Red Bank did some of the same in the 80s. Water was something you earned. :pinch: Junction,TX was in a two year drought when that happened and Bear was TRYING to get players to quit.

I played one year of high school football. We got yelled at constantly everyday in practice. None of us expected special treatment. We just wanted to win and it came from an attitude of toughness from our seniors on down. It started with coaches who cared about us as individuals, but would also scream in our faces when we screwed up or if we weren't giving enough effort. Nobody held our hands. None of us were good enough to play Division I football. But what we did do was go 9-1 in the regular season and win our Division Championship. We had no chance at pro careers. I think some of these kids have just always had it easy when it comes to football. Well now they're playing against men in the toughest conference in college football. Time to grow up or go elsewhere.

Didn't catch their names.
The guys who come on after Swain on WVLZ were talking about the Justin Martin rumor.
They talked about all of the players that have left in the last few years.
They claimed to have talked to several players that said they didn't leave because of playing time but because they didn't like Butchs personality.
Anybody else hearing this kind of thing?
They also said that the common thinking about those that leave is that they are just "too soft" for this program now.
But they said that Is not true with most.
They would like to see a little kinder and gentler Butch and there will be fewer transfers.
Not really sure how I feel about this.

If you play on the team don't f with the coach. We have lost no one of consequence.

If anyone is interested in Butch's passionate leadership / accountability style, see the clip (and specifically) the :60 following that USC RB going 75yds for a TD vs 10 defenders.

That should enlighten everyone. :)
