Josh Dobbs (merged)

It's an interesting thought that they'd actually just retain all 4 QB's. I'm not about to say it's impossible but...hmmmm.

This is another take that's less optimistic about Dobbs making the team.

Colbert On Backup QB Competition: 'Obviously, Landry's Our Number Two' - Steelers Depot

"It’s a given that Rudolph is going to make the team’s 53-man roster this year as long as he remains fully healthy and isn’t ultimately placed on the Reserve/Injured list. Assuming he sticks on the 53-man roster, Dobbs will more than likely be the odd man out and especially if Rudolph can’t earn the right to backup Roethlisberger over the course of the next four weeks."

In truth before we even have a preseason game played we're stuck with almost nothing from which to make substantive speculation.

“I mean, obviously, Landry’s our number two. Joshua Dobbs is our number three right now and Mason has to work his way through the rotation. They’ll get their reps and Coach [Mike Tomlin] likes to mix the reps up to make it a fair competition so that when Landry and Mason and Joshua are working, they work with different groups so as to balance it out.

This was also said. Dobbs is three and Rudolph is TRYING to work his way up.

Rudolph is wearing nigh impenetrable plot armor, you surely know this. Short of outright calamity they (nor any team) is going to cut a QB they just got through drafting at #76 overall.

It basically comes down to this; Big Ben and Rudolph are on the roster. Dobbs is odd man out in a 3 man rotation unless he or Rudolph play so well as to make Jones simply expendable.

Um no. NFL rules state that you can take 3 quarterbacks on a 53 man roster.

Does the rule say you can only have three? I just thought they did away with the Third QB Rule and simply allowed for a 46th active player.

Either way, 4 QBs would be absolutely dreadful roster management. Most teams don't even bother to dress their 3rd QB, so a 4th would be moronic.

You guys must not be following Steelers camp at all. Dobbs has been significantly more impressive than Rudolph according to almost every observer. To a degree that should be expected since he's in his 2nd year and Rudolph is a rookie. But the media has also pointed out that Dobbs clearly has the stronger arm.

Rudolph is less physically talented than Dobbs and he's only 6 months younger. The idea that he has a free pass to the roster while Dobbs has an uphill climb is pure conjecture on your part. Steelers invested a 3rd rounder in him and a 4th rounder in Dobbs. They're basically trying to find a diamond in the rough with both of them being developmental picks. You talk about Rudolph like he's a 1st rounder they have already sunk a lot of money into. He's in the exact same boat as Dobbs. Both guys are cheap and easily replaceable.

Sigh...dude, I don't give half a squirt of rat urine what you think or what you post by others. In fact, I totally allowed for Dobbs to make the roster in the very effing post you quoted. Hell, I hope he does, who the *&$^ do you think I'd rather be pulling for...Rudolph? The glaringly obvious fact is that the odds of dumping a QB you burned the #76 draft choice on and ink is barely dry on a 4yr 4 million dollar contract are looooooow. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes. If Dobbs is REALLY going to be that good the more likely option would be beating out Jones for #2 and both he and Rudolph be the young guns for the future.

Yep. Whoever develops will be the guy that stays. Same exact situation.
It's a third vs a fourth. Both about the same age.

Pretty sure you are wrong.

If they keep 4 QBs on the payroll it means that Dobbs is on the practice squad.

Or that Rudolph is on the ps.

The Steelers aren't going to put Rudolph in a position to get poached.

Why would they do that with Dobbs if he's clearly outperforming Rudolph?

The preseason will ultimately decide what happens. But if Dobbs lights it up in the preseason and Rudolph struggles like Dobbs did last year, then how does it make any sense for the Steelers to put Dobbs in position to be poached but keep Rudolph?

You guys are looking at this as though Rudolph is starting from a position of privilege. He's not a 1st round pick. He's simply a 3rd rounder. He's also not some super young kid. He's 23 years old like Dobbs. He's also not some freakish talent like Josh Allen with all those amazing physical tools that teams will want to develop. According to most of the media observers at Steelers camp, he's had the weakest arm of all 4 QBs.

Rudolph is in the same boat as Dobbs. Both are 23 years old. Both are mid-round picks. Both have relatively cheap contracts. The Steelers are not gonna simply give Rudolph a free pass onto the roster if he's stinking it up while Dobbs is lighting it up. If its relatively close, Rudolph might have the slight edge cause he's a rookie and he was drafted a little earlier than Dobbs. But this is not like Josh Allen vs Nathan Peterman over in Buffalo where one guy is the clear cut future being the 1st round pick while the other is a 5th round pick. Dobbs and Rudolph are in roughly the same position. If Josh lights it up in the preseason and Rudolph struggles, there is no guarantee that Dobbs is the guy the Steelers release. They will keep Dobbs in that case and then the decision would be to keep 4 QBs or release Jones or Rudolph.

The Steelers aren't releasing a 3rd round pick after one preseason. Rudolph is not battling for a roster spot.

If Dobbs has a great preseason, then they cut Jones.

They will not keep 4 QBs unless one is on the practice squad, and the only one that can possibly make the practice squad is Dobbs.

There’s zero chance the Steelers keep 4 QBs on the 53 man roster. I think it’s more likely Dobbs will have to take the backup job from Jones to stick around. Rudolph is safe unless he’s a total dud

ROFL....how freakin predictable. D4H doesn't say a WORD when Rudolph was getting praised in mini-camp, and now after he finds tweets that back up his crusade, he won't shut up.

Of course....he's still lying his ass off and twisting things that aren't there. Let's take a look. D4H says "Dobbs has been significantly more impressive than Rudolph according to almost every observer. "......and the proof given....not one person says this in ANY of the "proof". The closest is the first guy who said he had "noticably more velocity". That's it.

So breaking news guys....from one tweet where a dude says Dobbs had more velocity == "almost every observer says Dobbs has been significantly more impressive than Rudolph".

ROFL.

Stock up: Justin Hunter
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Justin Hunter, 27, is among the early camp standouts—JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh’s second-best receiver, has been dealing with some sort of lower-body injury, which has given Hunter, owner of a 40-inch vertical leap and 4.4 speed, the opportunity to seize some first-team reps. Assuming Ed Bouchette’s reporting is accurate—it probably is, because it almost always is—Hunter is handling his business just fine.
This is great! The only proven commodities in Pittsburgh’s receiving corps as of this writing are Smith-Schuster—who, by his own admission, prefers operating from the slot—and Antonio Brown. Moreover, Martavis Bryant’s departure to Oakland on draft night left the Steelers with a gaping aperture at the No. 2 receiver slot, which they sought to alleviate almost immediately by drafting James Washington. However, it seems like Hunter, a more fitting Martavis Bryant proxy than Washington, has a realistic shot to win the job.
