We are good at lb this year, means we have him for four more years! Get well, get stronger and learn everything you can from A.J.!

He will be able to medical red shirt. Also, he will have learned from the game experience he got from the first four games and all of the practices he had.

He will be that much better once he returns.

Weatherly, come on down, you are the next contestant on the Price is Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A medical redshirt hardship waiver may be granted to athletes who appear in fewer than 30% of team competitions (none after the midpoint of the season) then suffers a season-ending injury.

Fewer than 30% would mean if he played in the UGA game he wouldn't be able to get one right?

At least it happened early enough in the season that he'll have time to fully heal before next season. My dad had a torn labrum, it's not the worst injury in the world to rehab from, it just takes a little patience and time. He should be 100% next year.

Not if we go to the playoffs and SEC Championship...... Butch Jones hinting to something perhaps??? lol :yes:

4/14= 28.6%... So we wouldnt necessarily need make it to the national championship... just first round of playoffs will be fine.

WIN OUT FOR BATES!!!

Thankfully we don't really need him this season anyway... With aj and jmr. He'll be needed in the future for sure

There is little doubt the RS will be granted since it was in his second game. Hate he got injured. The positive side is that he gets an extra year to learn the system since he was not an EE and he needed to add 10-15 lbs. of muscle.

Oh, his second game? missed that. Disregard previous post. We can just win the SEC Championship for sips and giggles then.

Anyone can take a red shirt at anytime. A medical red shirt has to granted by the ncaa, most times depending ones actual playing time before the injury. If I’m not mistaken there have been players who red shirted then were granted another medical red shirt year. Correct me if I’m wrong. Whether he wants or is granted an addition year lets hope he has a full, 100% recovery.

This is the same injury that caused Hurd to miss most of his senior season IIRC, so hopefully a full recovery for Mr. Bates.

Has he played in all 4 games so far? If he has then he's played too much for a medical redshirt. They could appeal to the NCAA, but who knows what they will do.

If he didn't play in one of the games then he should be good.

If a player plays in 4 games they played in more than 30% of the games for the regular season...ugh

How to Get a Medical Redshirt

This says if just a few conditions are met, a Medical Hardship Waiver, or what's called the medical redshirt, is pretty much guaranteed.

1. Season ending injury?
Torn labrum ... check.

2. Prior to start of 2nd half of the season?
Only 4 played of 12 ... check.

3. Participation by injured athlete in no more than 30% of season or 3 games, whichever is greater.

This will be the tough nut. UT roster has him as the backup Will LB PLAYING/STARTING - 4/0.

4÷12=0.33. So he's over 3 contests but at 33%, which is the greater. It will depend on the date of his injury.
