2023-2024 Vols Basketball Rankings Tracker

It's been 5 years since our historic season and Sweet Sixteen run with Williams, Schofield, Bone, Turner, and Bowden.

Some of you may remember I did a tracker for our AP Poll ranking that year. We spent 4 weeks at #1, and the entire season in the top 10.

Let's run it back this year.

Final AP Poll of the season has us 5th. IMO tall hill to climb to get the last #1 seed. Need help from UNC.

What’s hilarious is if you look at our last 4 games vs UNC’s last 4 games it’s not even close. We went 3-1 against 4 top 20 teams with 2 wins on the road. UNC beat middling Miami and NC State at home, both by single digits, whipped a really bad ND team at home and then won at Duke so they had 1 good win to our 3 yet somehow they moved from 9th to 4th, jumping us as we started that stretch at #4 and now sit at #5. It’s completely illogical.

The problem is that we fans are going through all these "metrics", rankings, ratings, etc hoping to get a handle on where things stand and what we have to do. At the end of the day, it's a committee with a ton of data that they can weigh differently each and every year in order to do exactly what they want to do and get the outcome they desire. With so many different factors to consider, they can make the case for the team they prefer or the one that's most beneficial to the wallet. Let's not forget that this tournament is the NCAA's cash cow. To my knowledge, it's their only source of revenue. They want and need as many eyeballs on this as possible. They want the shiniest toys up front in the display. If this was coming down to us vs Virginia Tech, I'd feel some optimism. But we're going against some of the bluest of the blue in NC. Nope. Just enjoy the SECT, pray for no injuries and hope we get favorable matchups that give us a nice run. Even if we did get a 1 seed, we can win the first game playing 3 on 5, but after that, our defense had better be elite because an 8/9 seed can certainly send us home early if JJJ and Vescovi no show on us again. I'd hoped those 2 would finally get going and help carry us to a special season, but they are what they are. Can we get back to back solid games from those 2 offensively? 3? I'm not so sure.

I get what you’re saying but I do believe we would be a 1 seed if they did brackets today. And it does matter as the stats show it’s considerably better to be a 1 vs being a 2. My personal opinion is if we win 2 to make the Final then we’re good. If UNC doesn’t win the ACC tournament we would also be good. AZ is basically eliminated from the 1 discussion.
