McDonald's All American Game

Davis will fit right in ......she missed a bushel basket full of layups.

Have to say that I was expecting something different from her from all of the praise she's been getting on this board. She's athletic, but she looks very raw.

Westbrook was the clear standout of the incoming class. She already plays with the poise of a college player.

Agree on both points.Davis did not impress .Of course All Star games are not a good basis to come to conclusions and put her in a box.Hopefully ,this was not typical of her play.

I think Hayes was the standout, her defense & speed is second to none. KK scored every time her teammates went gave it to her, had she got it more she would've been dominating in the post.

I agree but she also spent all of the game at the 4 spot, it is rare that we will see her at that spot at UT therefore I am giving her the benefit of the doubt, she spent most of the game playing on the block/defending the post, she didn't get to room the perimeter like Boothe and Walker was allowed to do! I like that she didn't pout about not getting touches/the ball! On a team where Chassity Patterson, Boothe and Walker were all gunning for POTG, I commend some of the other girls for swallowing their pride and not being selfish (Like the 3 I mentioned seemed to be on several occasions)

After checking out the game here are my thoughts:

KK: She's a solid rebounder who plays aggressive defense and is always looking to block the shot (nothing like Russell). I think she'll be a nice backup who can focus on defense and rebounding

Westbrook: I love her quick decision making. She gets rid of the ball quickly and doesn't spend valuable time over-dribbling. A clear floor general with great vision. She was also able to finish with contact and has active hands on defense. She had four assists but played a role in more buckets.

Hayes: She's quick, has great vision and is a pesky defender. She's aggressive in the open court and looks to attack. I would love to see her get some time in the backcourt with Westbrook.

Davis: Not her best game but I loved her rebounding and ability to run the floor. She seems to be the type to play better in a typical game.

Most impressive: Chasity Patterson and Rellah Boothe. Patterson has a quick crossover, smooth jumper; and is confident in the open court. Boothe has great range and is an aggressive rebounder. The prototype for inside-outside. She proclaimed Texas would win at least two titles with her and I'm not ready to dispute that.

Most overrated: Dana Evans. Most likely she's not suited for this style of game but I found her to be sloppy often it seemed the game was too fast for her. IMO she holds onto the ball too long. I'm very happy she chose Louisville and we got Hayes.

Congrats to Evina Westbrook for being named the McDonald's High School Girl's Player of the Year.

All four players are extremely talented. I expect Westbrook to start at point guard from Day One. The only one who can mess this up is Holly. As long as the best players get the most minutes, we'll be fine.

As others pointed out, it's an All-Star game so it's hard to say, but the other three LV recruits outside of Westbrook IMO didn't stand out.

Boothe and Patterson were by far the most impressive players on the court. Walker also had a good second half. The big girl going to Louisville looked good too.

I thought Patterson and Boothe were taking good shots, and they were making them. Boothe in particular. She shot the ball well.

Walker was clearly gunning for POG. She had a good 2nd half, but she was awful in the first.

Our recruits were more content to try a play a team game. None of our players settled in on playing one on one. They had Rennia playing the four at times... she is a perimeter scorer and mid range specialist with the ability to get on the offensive glass. I've watched her for 3 years... she doesn't miss often. She played rushed in a game that had zero structure.

Evina is our point guard of the future. Annie can be equally effective off the ball and showed that at Riverdale as Aislynn ran the point often for them. Evina's court vision was the most impressive on both sides of the ball. She had some great help side defensive moments as well as not letting Walker score on her in any 1 on 1 situation. Westbrook is the real deal IMO.

I agree, Rellah and Chasity are something special and Texas will be very tough with them added to their already talented roster.

With Walker, Booth, and Patterson, all they wanted was someone to bring the ball in and someone to get their rebound if they missed!!!!! It will be interesting to see if they let the other players on Texas have the ball any??? I know Geno will utilize Walker properly!

I felt like All of the girls contributed and played team ball. Davis was forced to play out of position but still looked promising. Is there any way to get stats on the game?

The thing that would make me happy is I was Karen Alston is the fact that Patterson and Boothe were taking shots within the offense, and they were good shots. Sometimes, it's nice to have players willing to take ownership...especially since the West was ahead the whole game and those two players stepped it up to keep it from getting away.

Admittedly, I was selfish and was hoping one of the Tennessee players would just take the game over. The team has suffered from passive play in the last decade outside of Diamond, so having someone willing to make things happen will be sorely needed...especially if Diamond leaves for the WNBA.

In my opinion, no. They could score on uncontested layups and free throws, but none of them hit any perimeter shots or created any shots off the dribble. I also didn't see any great defense from Anastasia. Certainly nothing to give Holly reason to start them over Alexa, so I guess Alexa better be ready to play next year.

I think Patterson and Boothe will continue to shoot every time they get the ball! Even when a better shot is available to another team mate. It will be interesting to see if Texas is better or they cause dissention on the team???

Attitude: It is an all star game ...... everyone should share the ball but on the East you would be lucky to get your hands on the ball ! And if you ever passed... You would never see the all again!

With Boothe and Walker and Patterson! NO BODY will ever get an outside shot because they will not pass the ball to anyone else. Watch the game again and count the times those three passed verses shooting! You cannot create or do anything else without the ball! KK and Davis were stuck under the goal and the only way they would see the ball is a rebound or Annie would pass to them??? You were impressed with Booth , Patterson, and Walker because they took all of the shots.....

Alexa will run rings around Middleton and as far as point guard passing Annie's will be simple and Alexa will do a double nut clutches with a full twist and Mercedes will never catch it!!!

Maybe since it's Alexa fourth year she might start the first game?

Obviously we watched different games. Anastasia only took one shot from the perimeter so it's not like she was missing a lot. She was beating all of her defenders off the dribble and getting to the rim. Middleton will be on the bench from day 1.

You are incorrect about a number of things in your statement. One, both the rowing team and the soccer team were Lady Vols. I'm not sure if the rowing team changed until Dave Hart made the move against the Lady Vol moniker, but the soccer team started to slowly change when Angie Kelly left and Hart brought in Brian Pensky. That was an indication of things to come under Hart!

And, Lady Vols wasn't a 50's name to begin with. Pat didn't become the head coach until 1974. Originally, the moniker was Tennessee Women's Basketball. Sometime before Pat took over the moniker for all of the women's teams became the "Volettes". In 1976 Pat made a move to change that moniker and after consultation with the team proposed the adoption of the name "Lady Vols". This was adopted throughout the athletic department and, in fact, the volleyball team was the first to officially use the name since their season started before the basketball team.

One thing that is important here is that the Lady Vol moniker was adopted by the ladies themselves after meeting and discussion and not forced on them by a male administration, like was done by Hart and crew! While I am a proponent of the Lady Vol name, I would be accepting of the change if the teams had been given the opportunity to consider and make the ultimate decision.

And, if as you state at the end of your comment, the name will make the difference in relevance to the program, why hasn't Pensky taken the soccer team to the top of the standings since he and Hart made the first move to eliminate the "outdated" name?

Jim

"Ladies" is an outdated term. If you don't get that--and being Southerners I suppose I should understand that you don't--I don't know what to tell you. If the rowing and soccer and volleyball coaches thought Lady Vols was still relevant, they'd have wanted to keep it. It isn't except to a bunch of women's basketball diehards who are still pining for the PS era. We'll see how the next women's basketball coach feels about it; I'm afraid he or she will have no choice as old people in orange sweaters will descend on him or her like locust were a decision to be made to scrap the name. If Lady Vols was adopted in 1976, that makes it more than 40 years old. It's OLD. The logo is likewise OLD and weak-looking. Look at the Power T and look at the Lady Vols logo. Big differernce. One strong, the other weak. Things change in life...A LOT of women's programs put the word Lady in front of their nickname in the 1970s and 1980s--and I'm quite sure a lot of Lady names at other colleges have been phased out. I've never said a word about a nickname having any relevance to a program's performance. It doesn't. It about image and identity in 2017.

with a smile not a lot of help side defensive support. similar to most of the games men and women's. One awareness in such games is the players who have the bodies more physically mature than their peers. Booth is such an example. Also the players on the USA 16 and 18 teams didn't easily mesh in the few weeks they were together.

just fun to have been able to watch go lvs
