I do come from slave holding ancestors, big white plantation house, a couple of the slave quarters are still standing. You can go into the slave rooms in the main house and see writing and drawings on the walls of the slave rooms.

Do I feel quilty or ashamed, no, not in the least. It was what it was, I never participated in the practice. Nor received any benefit from it.

My family also lost everything including the land after the civil war. Through hard work they got most of the land back but even in my time we never had money.

But going with the race angle allows for a lot of feigned anger and excuses for continued failure and an overall lack of responsibility. The proper term would be scapegoating.

The Tea Party needs to step up here and start to defend stand your ground laws. Everywhere people are going bonkers over this law and there is nothing from the Tea Party over this or any of the IRS scandals.

They need to step up in a big way and they are not, and they wonder why this country is going to crap.

The tea party and Republicans need to keep their mouths shut on the SYG and GZ trial. The opposition is doing a good enough job making themselves look like race baiters and idiots, they don't need the help.

I would but I have a job and dont live in FL. Plenty of retired TP people in FL but obviously not organized enough to do anything.

Juror B37 backed out of her book deal for a reason and expect politicians to do the same when pressure is applied and the TP doesnt respond

I'm shocked this is coming from you. Maybe I am misunderstanding.

However, who gets to decide what's "reasonable" or what would have been "reasonable" based on an infinite amount of situations that could take place? How do you define "reasonable" in you make it a requirement?

im not defending SYG laws, im just saying the TP needs to step up here because the 2nd amendment is under attack

Why shocked? Stand Your Ground laws permit using deadly force when it is not of last resort.

As for who decides when it is reasonable: the jury. That might be the best we can ask for.

The Tea Party needs to go away as quickly as possible. If they want to defend 2nd Amendment using the Zimmerman case as an example, they should defend it without reference to SYG. It was traditional self-defense; Zimmerman acted in what can reasonably be understood as last resort. Had he not acted and had he not been armed, it is reasonable to believe he might have been killed were Martin to continue pounding his skull into the concrete.

When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said this could've been my son. Another way of saying that is, a Trayvon Martin could've been me 35 years ago. When you think about why, in the African American community at least, there's a lot of pain around what happened, I think it's important to recognize that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn't go away.

Folks understand the challenges that exist for African American boys. But they get frustrated that they feel that there's no context for them, that that context is being denied. And that all contributes to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that from top to bottom both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.

He also said protests over the verdict should remain nonviolent.
The president said americans are aware of the "history of racial disparity in our criminal laws" and said the government should review some state and local legislation, such as florida's "stand your ground" law, saying they may promote rather than discourage violent confrontations.
A jury acquitted zimmerman last saturday in martin's february 26, 2012, shooting death, inciting anger among many who considered the incident racially motivated murder.
Obama issued a written statement on sunday noting that the jury had spoken and urging calm and reflection.
On friday, he also said successive generations of americans have gotten better at changing attitudes on race, but "we have to be vigilant and work on these issues."
to demonstrators calling for federal civil rights charges against zimmerman, obama said they must "have some clear expectations here."
he stressed that law enforcement and the criminal code "is traditionally done at the state and local levels, not at the federal level."

nd there are very few African-American men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me, at least before I was a senator. There are very few African-Americans who haven’t had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.
