You think hiring a proven HC doesn't matter?

Only reason we did not beat UF 4 straight years was Butch Jones. UF just beat LSU.
They are 5 -1 and 3 -1 in the SEC. I guess UF was loaded to begin this year?
Looks like they do not have to wait 4 years to turn it around.
I am not throwing JP under the bus. This is aimed at the UT decision makers.
You get what you pay for and UT is just not willing to do that.

funny how you seem to forget that UCLA hired a PROVEN coach, Nebraska hired a PROVEN coach, Florida State hired a PROVEN coach and all three are terrible. When you quote stats please dont pick and chose the stats you use that fit your agenda.

I’ve followed the Vols since 1963 and the only proven Head Coach they’ve hired is John Majors.

Yet, Butch Jones, Derek Dooley, Lane Kiffin we’re all more proven than Gus Malzhan, Kirby Smart, Jim McElwain or Hugh Freeze. Maybe it’s the people hiring the people.

When we say Tn had the money to buy a big name coach we are forgetting that the dudes who actually have the gold aren’t going to lose control and still write those checks to the program. The administration doesn’t write those checks without a deposit being made by someone else. Until someone brings stability this will continue to be a train wreck.

Be careful, next week we are gonna need Mullen to have been the greatest ever at miss st, to use as our excuse as to why we get killed by auburn.

Mullin reached success not seen at miss st. He did a really good job there.

Lol. There are no excuses as to why we will get killed by Auburn. Just facts. We dont have a single player, other than maybe Smith, from this years or last years teams that would start at AU. Auburn will kill us because they have a much better team. Simple as that.

The saying is you are what your record says you are. Mullen was average at MSU. Also, MSU, has never been considered a bowerhouse D1 school.

There is nothing "proven" about Willie at FSU. But I love to see Frost and Kelly's record going 0-10 tonight.

Exactly, which is why mullen did a good job there.

Lsu was in no way the #5 team. UF clearly had talent being wasted under their previous staff. UT had the unenviable combo of no talent and poor coaching

LSU finally has a steady QB. They have played the best football out of anyone in the first 4 weeks of the season. Definitely a top 5 team.

Today was all about Mullen. Amazing how many people called him Butch 2.0. Guy coached and won. Sadly, we missed out on him and Florida is only gonna get better.

Coaching matters.

Um, Kiffin was not more proven than Malzahan. But yes you are correct, the puppet master pulling the strings is the problem. Take 2009, we had Gary Patterson. Hamilton told him to kick rocks.

Truth is we should have let Currie bring in Leach, but Currie had to be the fall guy for Haslam wanting to bring in Schiano.

I hope Pruitt becomes a good HC, but he looks the part of a guy who hasn't been a HC yet. Here's hoping he, and the Vols, improve.

Take 2009. We had Phil one year from a SEC title appearance and a freshly signed 6 year extension. Financially alone, bad decision to fire him.

What’s crazy about all of this is that we lock Mullen in had Chip Kelly not turned down Florida. Crazy dominos.

Really there just aren’t that many high level coaches out there to get. That’s why you do see a fair amount of coordinator hires. UGA’s last 2 hires have been coordinators and both have been HRs. Stoops to OU, Herman to Texas if you want another current one. Sometimes you do have a Saban situation where he was proven at one power 5 and succeeded at another, sometimes you have someone like Meyer who succeeded at a non-power 5 (Utah was not power 5 at the time), and sometimes you have a coordinator hire that works like Richt. The proven power 5 coach moving from one program to another with success at both is probably the most unlikely of those scenarios though.

But lets not pretend that Mullen would have been at the top of many good teams boards. And he turned us down.

Mullen was on a few schools’ shortlist. Hell it was widely known he would be at Georgia had Kirby turned them down.

I also know that Mullen wasn’t in a rush to leave Starkville either as he was a saint there and was injecting so much cash into the school and AD.

Odd that Florida recruited worse than UT and won 4 games last year with these guys and it took all they had to suck slightly worse head to head vs UT last year, but suddenly they're very talented, much more than Tennessee.

This program would have been 10000 times better off with Mike Leach than with how the search turned out after he agreed to take the job and was then told he didn't have it. I'll never understand what Fulmer was thinking, or anyone else, by turning down a bonafide program changing head coach for the complete unknown.

Uhh there's a reason Mike Leach is at washington state. How did his offense do at UK? They win championships? Sure, Leach would have brought some fun times and maybe that was what we needed but Fulmer wanted someone who understood the championship formula. Which is good line play, solid defense, and running the football. Pruitt understands that though that doesnt guarantee he can accomplish it

We have to throw out stuff to dimish the status of other teams. Helps us cope with the fact that we accept excuses for failure.
