I admit I dont follow recruiting that closely. Until a name is mentioned here as a legitimate target or commit I don't know anything about them. Even then I don't delve that deep into it. Usually it's just a brief scan of their Rivals profile.

Anyway, what i find hilarious is during the recruiting process many comments on here would lead you to believe these kids are all world. Destined be NFL starters. The sky is falling when they dont chose TN. Then when they don't pan out to the expectations their stars or highlight film created they become the butt of jokes.

Take Jaques Smith for example. During his recruitment people on here were building him up to be the next Reggie White. Now he is criticized for lack of production.

Palardy is the same way. He was the savior of the kicking game as a recruit and when Kiffin bolted people were freaking out that he would flip to a FL school.

I'm not saying the criticism isnt necessarily deserved nor is this meant to be a stars debate. Bluechip players are important to fielding competitive teams even if there is not a guarantee that they will meet those expectations. I just find it amusing (maybe a little sad too) how much some (not all) on here build up these kids then are so quick to turn on them by their sophomore year.

I think since we have been so bad lately our fans look at each class as our potential "savior" class. For instance, the same class w jaq, bray, hunter, and david Ricky had there chance to bring UT back this year. At least that's why recruiting means so much to me. I wouldn't look at the **** until NSD if we were worth a ****

I agree with your post. But now we have a real coach & a coaching staff that will get the potential out of these 3* & 4* players. It's bad that we can't seem to be able to pull some of these elite players to be at UT. I know that we are tired of hearing "wait next year" but I think that's going to be true. Give our coaches time to put a winner on the field this next season & we will have 4 & 5 star players wanting to play for UT.

Since recruiting has become a business the process has become a circus filled with hype, drama, and theatrics. Ridiculous.

The fact is that blue chip players have a better chance of being those NFL caliber players that you want on your football team; however, there are some that just don't pan out for one reason or another.

Bottom line: I would want a blue chip player over one with low stars based on the history of their overall performance.

It's not all about ranking stars or even about the number of players being brought in. Rather, it's about whether or not the players pan out. Kiffin's class absolutely did not do that despite its national ranking.
If four years from now we look back and see that these current recruits won a significant number of football games and competed for SEC East titles, then we can say it was a good class.
It's up to Butch Jones and his staff to bring players into Knoxville who will make a contribution, not accumulate stars from Rivals.com or any other service.

This is the truth. Since the notorious 07 class we have had too much attrition and too many busts. It has shown on the field.

But that wasn't my original point of this thread. It's about how people build these kids up to be NFL caliber players, regardless of stars, based on watching them tear through high school opponents (most of whom will never play organized ball again). Then when they aren't ALL SEC the same posters turn on them and make jokes about how terrible they are. It's funny watching the whole process over time.

Then on the other hand you sign a player like WR C. Patterson who did more than UT ever expected.

No doubt. CP was highly rated but probably would have been a Rivals/ESPN top 5 player if it wasn't for his high school grades.

This is the most important thing to me. Rather have a staff that can field a team than the number 1 recruiting class and we have yet another losing season. Im more interested in the kind of players we are targeting than their ranking.

I don't have time to get in flame war.

Besides, something tells me when it comes to flaming you would win hands down.

oh, a gay joke! pretty original. how long did you and ur friends sit around the completely sustainable and eco-friendly treehouse to come up with that?

ive always wondered, do people bring you food up there? how do you potty? who do you use for internet?

Who said anything about you being gay? Why were you so quick to assume that? I was talking about the message board temper tantrum you started.

Maybe you need to stop being so paranoid and go back to your Widespread Panic thread.
