Prolly for the money. Rumor is he is making $5 mil for a year, only obligated to 2 appearances a month.
Part of the problem is that nobody has cool names anymore. We have guys like John Cena, David Otunga, Alex Riley, Santino Marella, Brock Lesnar, Daniel Bryan, Michael McGillicutty, Wade Barrett, etc etc. And a lot of it reflects in lack of character (not necessarily with all those guys). I don't expect people to have cheesy gimmicks, but almost all of the all time greats have some kind of nickname.
I think I read somewhere that Brock was leaving UFC because his "health". I think it shows wwe is obviously desperate to bring BL back and put him on top as if he never left.
I really don't think the lack of "cool names" has hurt Brock Lesnar or John Cena. Hell, Cena's a bigger star than most of the guys in the 80's and 90's ever dreamed of being.
Wrestling has always had stars with bland names. Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Bill Goldberg, Kurt Angle, Kerry Von Erich, Harley Race, Arn Anderson, Nick Bockwinkel, Larry Zbyzsko, and on and on...those guys put far more asses in the seats than The Barbarian, Psychosis, Mantaur, Glacier, Red Rooster, and The Yeti.
Doesn't seem desperate to me at all.
In fact, I'd argue it negligent not to capitalize on his popularity and availability to return. Why would you not bring Brock back if he's willing and able?
