It's funny because every generation says this.

If'n only we could go back to the good ole' days where them blacks were in chains, women were pregnant and in the kitchen, and them q*eers didn't back'sass our arbitrary judgement.

Your view of this country is a special snowflake though, right?

Lighten up Frances.

Democrats sure seem to want to go back to the 50's..you know..when CEO pay wasn't so "out of control"...conveniently ignoring the whole segregation thing, no civil rights thing, black and white tv's, etc.

Honestly lets go back to any time. I'm white. I'll be fine.

oh sh1t Volprof is mixing his meds with alcohol again!

It's weird. Since Cyclops, I have found myself worrying about some of you d-bags (said with love and including myself.) Not that prof has a dependency issue, but I worry that he has stress at home that is causing him to fly off the handle at random times.

Wow...34, I hate to hear that. What was the cause?

He struggled with alcoholism for years. He tried many times to stop. Unfortunately his last attempt took his life.

He was a very good friend.

Sorry to hear that OB. Sorry to hear that is gone. Everyone is fighting something unfortunately.

Man, I didn't know that. Miss his eye jokes. I'm sorry you lost a friend and VN lost a good soul.

We certainly agree that it's ridiculous.

I don't buy that a misguided desire of academics to advance their career is the only thing driving these sorts of initiatives. Race, gender, and sex bias are real. Perhaps, you've had the experience of being the only white guy at some sort of social function. Being in a minority position like that changes the way you think and interact with people. That psychology can obviously be taken to weird extremes such as this, but some people undoubtedly do feel excluded because of their minority status and that needs to be respected.

1. I recognize the issue of exclusion. I thought I stated that in the post you are responding to.

2. I nor Volprof (so far as I can tell) ever said that career advancement was the only thing driving this. I don't doubt that they believe they are doing good and making an impact in their job.

3. Good intentions =/= good or reasonable policy and/or outcomes

4. Because we've elevated insensitivity, bias, etc. to the level of major offense in organizations (often times leading to firings, denials of promotions, sanctions, training, etc) these ridiculous attempts to ensure no one is ever made to feel excluded are permitted, celebrated and disseminated because speaking out against them is considered offensive and insensitive in and of itself.

You keep implying that any of us criticizing this are too dumb or shallow or self-centered or stuck in privilege to recognize that bias exists and people at times feel excluded. IOW - you are providing an example of what I'm pointing out in #4. Complain loudly about something everyone knows is dumb and you are labeled as part of the problem.

The real issue is not with this particular incident - it is with the out of proportion response to what might be a perceived slight. It's not the end of the world but it is worthy of discussion - is the reaction to the offense in proportion with the perceived offense. Unfortunately that is an unfruitful discussion because even bringing it up gets one labeled as an offender.

Your issue is making assumptions. I never wanted to know your opinion, whether it was the same as mine or not was irrelevant to me. It appears you were never able to grasp that fact. I dont find that shocking.

You still going to lie out your butthole, aren't you?

You know good and well what you meant.

I swear, some of you must think I was born yesterday. I didn't go to 7 years of graduate school, learning how to read the English language, for you to tell me I can't read the English language.

You got caught. It happens. Move on.

It's not that he disagrees with you; it's the arrogance in making a post in a thread saying you've already made a post concerning the issue in another thread, and suggesting that it would be in our benefit to go read it. You may be a professor but you are also an arrogant a$$hole.

An arrogant ******* on a Politics forum?

No, this is impossible.

We're all arrogant *******s.

You are too. We wouldn't be here if we weren't.

Whenever someone on here uses the "you're an arrogant this or that" card, I just laugh.

We're all ****heads, ****head.

Welcome.

Thanks for sharing. That is terrible, and I hate to hear this news. I feel for his family and friends.

I have seen his posts before and remember his "eyes" and "arghs". I didn't realize he struggled with a drinking problem.

I'm very sad to hear this and I'm sorry for your loss.
