Was that occurance, certainly no football play, by Eric Ainge the WORST play in UT football history? :dunno: I think so.

in'03 when we fumbled on the 1 yard line right before halftime against georgia. they then returned it 99 yards and destroyed us.

our season was then lost.

Yes Ainge's play was bad . . . sort of like the pick 6 that Clausen threw against ND last year. Get off his case, he's just a kid trying to make a play.

The ND pick was a nervous kid trying to make a play. The endzone cookie toss last night was a frightened kid not having a clue what to do.

I'll agree on the UGA fumble in 03....that was just a dumb mistake by Casey. if you go back and look at it, he simply didn't pull the ball back out of fleming's way, thus causing the fumble. Also, the score at that point was 12-6, with us in a position to score and go up by 1 heading to the Half. turn that around and make it 19-6, and we were cooked.

I too cried that night. :banghead:

Back in the early 1990s when we let Rocket Ishmael return 2 punts for touchdowns.

Just to clarify, I don't mean to imply that it wasn't a dumb thing to do, but young QBs under pressure in the end zone tend to do stupid things.

I would be more forgiving but Ainge looked like a true freshman out there. I mean he started a half a dozen games last year and he didnt look like he had enough awareness to ground the ball. I am amazed at what a different player he is this year vs last year. Last year he would outrun some of the defensive linemen to make a play, this year it is though he doesnt even know they are there.

...UT vs #1 ND. chuck webb breaking loose late in the game and tries to take it to the house as opposed to taking a knee for the fg attempt. we had that game won!

I don't remember that one. All I remember from that game is driving down at the end and getting intercepted in the endzone in the closing seconds.

Was it James Stewart that fumbled going into the endzone against Bama in '93?

The Clausen goof in '03 was bad, too.

The Stoerner fumble in '98. Oh, whoops, that was Arkansas. Nevermind.

I think you're remembering the game against #1 Colorado in the pigskin classic. If he had gone out of bounds we may have had an opportunity for a FG. That was the same year we pounded the gators 45-3, lost to 'bama at home 9-6  when we were #3 and they were 2-3 or something like that (incidently, this game was the absolute worst case of Johnny ball EVER), and squandered a chance to beat #1 Notre Dame in the last seconds when Andy Kelly threw the pick by Todd Lyte. The schedule that year was murder. When's the last time we played 2 #1 teams in the same season?

But back on topic, that 'bama game in '90; after dicking around the entire game, 2 yards and a cloud of dust, we lined up to kick the winning field goal with seconds remaining. Bama blocks it, the ball bounces all the way down field into field goal range for them, and they kick the winning field goal. Not necessarily just one play there, but one of the most worst sequence of events I can remember.

I'm glad you posted that . . . I've been thinking about that sequence ever since I saw this thread. Ainge's play can't hold a candle to that debacle.

We had 175 yars of total offense that night . . . and actually outgained Alabama. It was butt ugly, and unfotunately I was there.

Unfortunately I was there too... one of the most disappointing games I've ever witnessed.

What game were you watching. Chuck Webb never suited up against Notre Dame. He was out that season with an injury to Pacific.

What happened was that great comeback when Pickens got that perfect onsides kick. 2-3 plays later, kelly throws an int in the endzone ending a miraculas comeback.

Toughest loss i have absorbed not mentioned:

Block punt end the end zone against army
Don Smith MSU. Running the option 60 yards for the winning score.

Missed Fg in the last seconds against Auburn in 90 after giving up 24-6 lead in the 4th. Never forrget the OL throwing that cup of water in the kickers face when he got to the sideline. That tie felt like a loss.

David Palmer running the 2 point conversion.

Damn Im getting depressed need to watch the 86 sugar bowl.

Ainge's play was not the worst, but it was the ugliest play ever... The fact that he also got nailed and had his head shoved into the goal post was brutal...

Only game I've ever left/turned off early... I held out longer than many Vols... until the 4th started...

What about our chipmunk looking kicker getting a fg blocked with seconds left only to have Bama recover and kick their own fg for a 6-9 loss.

Or Suggs throwing an interception returned for a td vs florida

or pitching a sweep to jamal lewis on 4th and 3 against florida

or the kentucky qb running all over our d in 95

Anyone remember a game where Steve Alatore (sp?) was scrambling and works his way back to the goal and then fumbled? I swear it looked like he just set it down on the ground for the defenders to pick up.

He couldn't taken the sack easily with no safety but no
