Worst calls by the refs that went in Tennessee's favor

2022 at Pittsburg. We made a catch in OT that went to review. I remember not thinking it was a catch but it was ruled a catch on the field and there wasn't enough on replay to overturn it.

Same game, what about Bru's TD before half. I can't remember if he went out of bounds on his own or got pushed out.

Reception rules were different back then too. Ask the FL receiver Gaffney.
He maybe possessed the ball for a millsecond...lol. The worst was it was at home and if called incomplete, everyone would have agreed. It was bad enough that Spurrier actually thought that UT was the better team that day and said so in his post game interview.

Speaking from myself... I don't recall any calls that blatantly won us games... I guess because is you win, it never really mattered but if you lost it was a travesty... the benefit of winning or losing
Syracuse, 1998. It may have been PI, but nobody would have thought anything of it had it not been called. We have a Natty because it was called. I think a lot of no calls, and lop-sided penalty counts are the things that have always hurt us. I remember Bama not getting called for a false start in 92 a series either before or after we were called for one in the same spot on the field. Bama won the game and eventually the Natty as a result of that no-call. I mean, how can a ref miss a false start?

20 years ago. šŸ˜‚ You really deny that the PF occurred? Don’t remember that he touched it, but LSU won anyway.
The PF on Florida should have either been offsetting penalties or a no call with the ref intervening, saying, ā€œC’mon guys, cut it out. The play’s over.ā€ The UT defender slapped the UF guy first. The UF guy responded equally. It’s not fair that the UF guy got called, and UT guy did not.

I’m not saying I’m unhappy with the results. It lead to the craziest moment I have ever experienced in Neyland. I was in the student section, and we went bonkers.

I honestly don’t remember much of that game because the day before, my daughter was born, and we were still at the hospital. A lot of different stuff was on my mind that night, but I do remember that muffed punt that they didn’t call.
I’d say you get a pass for the whole birth of a child thing, but you have to admit it’s a little poor planning on your part. If you get em pregnant after a big Tennessee win in the fall you’ll have an off season birthday for the kids. Doesn’t interfere with the truly important stuff

That wasn't a bad call. It might have been a late call, but there was absolutely PI on that play.
Absolutely pass interference, the flag was thrown late. But the guy pulls Fants shoulder pads back. Fant is a big guy and his body clearly goes backwards preventing him from jumping.

The hit out of bounds on Rohan Davey in the 2001 SEC Championship game at the 18:15 mark in the video below, that wasn't called a personal foul, is one that sticks out in my memory, since the hit out of bounds itself may have cost us the SEC title with Mauck coming in and stealing our lunch money after Davey couldn't get anything accomplished. šŸ” šŸ’ø

I was at that game with my LSU brother in law. It was such a hard ride back up to North GA after they stole that game from us. And stole they did. We had nothing but bewildered looks on our faces that 2nd half. Mauck could have never played another down for LSU and still left a hero. It was such a change in QB style we had no clue on the field or in the coaches box on how to stop it. We pretty well had that game locked down till Rohan went out. Prob woulda played for a Natty too. Was ranked #2 going in to that game. BIL cried for two quarters, then spent the rest of the game running up and down the steps in the upper deck. Was kinda hoping he'd trip. lol. We got suckered though. Free tickets to him from a client...very top row around the goal line. They all looked like midgets out there..

Edit.: I scanned thru the video and apparently had some bad memories of that game. It was pretty neck and neck most of the game. LSU didn't pull away till late 4th quarter. Mauck had more of that game than I remember, and he eventually got them rolling.

I was at the game with my father, brother and sister and it’s, to this day, my 85-year-old father’s most hated Tennessee loss as he always wanted to go to the Rose Bowl. He actually did go and watch the Texas-USC Rose Bowl but still hates Fulmer because of that one loss. I have a lower bar so I just absolutely love Fulmer for the ā€˜98 natty, getting Bama in trouble, and so many other special memories! I wasn’t happy we lost either, don’t get me wrong, but I was so stoked the Vols had beaten Florida the previous Saturday, ANYTHING beyond that was just gravy, baby! šŸŠ 🄳 šŸ¾

I've always like Fulmer. My only knock on him is that he got lazy after '98 and we went down hill, and he was old school which I didn't mind, but the game was changing at that point and he didn't go with it. Maybe his other error was going with sanders as OC. I did like Sanders. A good QB coach, bt he wasn't Cut as an OC and could just never come up with a Cut level offense and wasn't the answer for where the game was headed. I think clawson was an innovator at the time and could have done very well at UT, but i'm convinced Fulmer had the reins on him during games and if your gonna bring someone like clawson in for that kind of offense, you just gotta trust why you hired them and get out of the way. I've always felt the whole clawson debacle was all on Fulmer for not letting him do his thing. It was obvious we never really ran an offense he was supposed to be known for at the time. Just several years of bad decisions by Fulmer, be it pride or whatever, did him in.

Didn’t a pass hit Gibril Wilson or someone else in our secondary right betwixt the numbers in the 4th quarter for a sure pick six and it was dropped? That and the Stallworth fumble are what stick out in my memory. Like most Vol fans, I’ve never wanted to watch the replay and just have to go from memory.

I thought his Sanders hire really sank our program. My father thinks Fulmer was afraid of karma. He believes Fulmer was an OC who took Majors’ job, so he was terrified of hiring a competent OC. I disagree, as the Cutcliffe rehire and immediate turnaround of our offense in the ā€˜06 and ā€˜07 seasons proved how elite Cut truly was, not to mention his endorsement by the Mannings. I think he was just loyal to a fault and promoted Sanders out of a sense of loyalty when hiring a proven offensive coordinator would’ve been preferable. I like Sanders, just not as a Tennessee OC. I appreciate his efforts and the cool play call late in the national championship game. That was a glorious moment that every Vol fans cherishes, thanks to Sanders call and his players for executing it.

I think both are correct. And considering we were only down 4 points til about 4-5 minute mark in the game at hte least cost us OT, if not the game. Could have been the Stallworth fumble that set up the TD where they went up 11. Not quite sure though. The replay might bring tears, but dang watching Ice Man when he's in synch is magic.

Found the dropped pick 6 in the 4th...but...not the stallworth fumble in the 4th. Could have been earlier. A travis stevens fumble earlier in the game led t an LSU touchdown. So that was one game loser eventually.

We drove down at will to 1st and goal for a chance to tie 24-24. No attempted travis stevens runs. 3 straight incomplete passes and a field goal with just under 10 minutes left. So 24-20. Around 7 minutes, the dropped pick 6 right in the chest was Julian Battle. LSU went on to run that drive down to 2:30 with a TD to go up 11 instead of us up 3...and we held them to 4th and goal at hte one and they finally got in for that TD. There was a PI in there somewhere that set LSU up around the 30 with a 1st down. We had atleast two chances to win that game in the 4th in addition to the Stevens fumble that led to LSU's go ahead TD in the 3rd qtr. We had two or three chances to kill that late TD but gave up two long crossing slants and the PI on late down plays.

Couldn't find the Stallworth fumble so don't know waht quarter or if that killed a potential scoring drive or not, but Clausen was hot handed so it very well could have. Mauck gave LSU the spark to not get blown out that game, but we did more to lose that game than i recalled than Mauck did to beat us.

One thing was apparent, and i've always said this is UT's defensive nemesis no matter hte DC or the year, but Mauck gashed us on those mid length middle slants. As long as I've been watching UT, we've always been torched on those middle slants 20 yards down field. Always. It's our thing. Our defensive bad legacy.

We always bitch about the ones that went against our Vols, but what are some of the most memorable or, better yet, some of the most forgettable blown calls made by the refs that went our way? The incomplete pass that was scooped up and taken to the house by DeRon Jenkins against Louisville in 1993 comes to my mind, the play at the 7:50 mark in this video:

eventually Vermiel freaking melted down on that call.....I was at the game and somewhere is the VHS tape of it.....I remember him yelling "aw that's Horse puckey"....this highlight film cut away before he got started.

Danny O’Brien went NFL Blitz on Dylan Thompson after the play late in the 4th quarter against South Carolina in 2014. If that gets called, South Carolina gets a first down and it’s game over. But instead we got the ball back, tied it up, and won in OT.

The Stallworth fumble happened with 8:30 left in the game at the LSU 34-yard line, with LSU leading 24-20. It’s at the 2:56:10 mark in this vid. My seat was on the opposite side of the field, right where the fumble occurred. It could’ve been worse. The CBS camera could’ve focused on my sad face and I could’ve been ā€œJunior.ā€ šŸ˜‚

One thing always baffled me was clausen going I drafted. Additionally not ever hearing his name come up in any coaching needs considering his run he had here. Or for vacancies anywhere.

Been coaching HC for a while. Clabasas and his Alma mater bishop alemeny. Rick was always his OC. Has. 72-45 overall record with 2 CIL titles. Lost a third. All with calabash’s where he wa shrill isn’t with maybe only 6 losses. Then went to bishop where he and Rick played but struggled to stay .500 there but did make the semis one year. Ricks wife died last year from cancer and they stepped away. But he went back to westlake this year. With his coaching experience and success im surprised no one has tried to hire him up. Unless he’s not interested. He seems family time oriented now at 44.

He’s had about half a dozen sign with Arizona, USC, ND, and one other. Prob a few going FCS or smaller too.
