There are studies showing depression, bipolar and other mental defects are rare in poor countries. People that have to spend their days working/worrying about how to survive and feed their families don’t have time to have mental problems.

Depression isn't just feeling sorry for yourself because you have time and feel like it, this is a small child's understanding of mental illness. Many people in the U.S. who are depressed work 100+ hour weeks
