WNBA discussion thread?

Nothing negative. The guy in the NBA a few years ago got hammered with questions and other players about the situation as well. Now tell me how it's different except for the gender.
Yep. Not really sure why the Wings stepped in to censure the question or the response. The press ask a lot of assinine questions. This particular one actually may explain relevant questions about their roster development.

Phee totally deserves that contract, but probably won't be available to play until at least after the All-star break. Going to be a whole different ball of wax for the Lynx this year, They lost a lot in free agency and haven't replaced much. Also the pairing between the notoriously strict Cheryl Reeve and the notoriously freelancing Olivia Miles is going to be really interesting I'm still amazed they didn't take Betts, though they did need a point guard.

Quite a kerfuffle yesterday when it came out that Raes new contract is a training camp contract. But apparently that's just a money saving move and doesn't mean she'll have to fight for a roster spot. But its still low balling her, which is disappointing, especially in light of some of the ridiculous money some very midish players are getting. Rae has had to fight relentlessly for every scrap since she was drafted

I agree totally. Additionally, your use of the word kerfuffle brightened up more morning :)!

Dallas Wings wouldn't let Azzi Fudd answer the question about her and PB ...

It’s inappropriate because it has nothing to do with basketball. If SHE wants to bring it up, then she can. But, I can hear all the…."stop throwing it in our face fans" complaining about that. They played together at UCONN so does playing in Dallas change something anyway?

The media will do what they want and ask any questions they want, whether Americans like it or not....

I disagree. If you don’t answer…they will stop asking. People just surrender their power and rights and it’s something I just will never understand.

I did not know what a "development contract" is. For others in the same boat:

A WNBA development contract is a new roster designation introduced in the 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that allows teams to carry two additional players specifically for training and development, outside of the standard 12-player roster and the salary cap. These spots are designed to act as an in-house training pipeline, allowing teams to invest in young talent or rookies without using a full roster spot.

And that is a GOOD THING, as Sir Terry Pratchett would have it.
The job of the journalist is not to win favor with the public. That is the role of entertainment.
I read a social media that made good point. The topic is sports relevant since the two are teammates and their relationship has been made public; and 2) the Wings treated Fudd like a child by not allowing her to speak for herself.

It would not have been have a PR approved pre-planned response for a question you know will be asked. This situation is analogous to the "cover up is worse than the crime" mistake.

The Wings, not the Fever. Otherwise, we agree completely.

More public acknowledgement that athletes are people.

Had Fever on the brain owing to Justine P. !! Oh man, the Bird-Rapinoe split is going to bring out quite the social media mob.

I am surprised by this split. They seemed really connected but of course public image and private life can be very different

I also think they are in many ways wildly different people. Pinoe rarely took her diet or training seriously until Sue who she credited with teaching her discipline and extending her career as a result. We also know how hard it can be for athletes to find their identity after retirement. Really a bummer for us baby gays who looked up to them. They broke a lot of ground.

I bet the post-retirement identity transition played a significant role. It is not just who I am now, but who are we now?

Made me quite sad too. Huge fan of both and loved them as a couple.
As a soccer fan, I loved Meghan. When she broke into the national team, she not only had that charismatic it factor but her technical abilities were miles ahead of any one else. Over time, other players on the global supposed her on the technical level and the knee injuries diminished her athleticism, she still had the magic to make a game changing play right up
to the end of her career.

I’m a huge soccer fan as well, especially the women’s game. Rapinoe was a favorite of mine her entire career. I’ve had all of her national team jerseys, and I still wear them. I have mad respect for her.
