WNBA discussion thread?

Think Mom was super po'ed about FJ not making some postseason All Star teams. Did a lot of talking about how they didn't need college ball because she would be a lottery pick for the W. Which obviously didn't happen. She barely made the first round.

Also mom's got a history, went after it with Angel's mom on SM a few years ago. Wasn't she the one that ragged Angel about her low GPA?
Mad angel was in the latto music video and I think she did put that out about angel gpa

I’m happy for Zee, too, spojo. And for Barker. As for Spearman, I was fairly confident she’d be drafted because I suspected GMs could see the potential past her barely mediocre final season in college, with the blame for that not solely belonging to her. Yeah, it’s the third round and third-rounders making a roster is nearly impossible. But being able to put on her resumè that she was drafted to the W will boost her prospects to play overseas.

It’ll be interesting to see if Barker uses this humbling draft position to really buckle down and grow up and seriously try to reach her potential. We all saw flashes of brilliance in her, but personality issues hampered her. I hope she has learned from these past couple of months.

Absolutely! I think they had to see some potential with Zee, maybe from her time in 3x3. In any case, she can always lay claim to the fact she was drafted, even if she doesn’t make a roster. I also hope Barker can maybe find a player mentor in someone like Aja.

I’m just still shaking my head that Azzi Fudd was the #1 pick since I honestly don’t think she was the best player in the draft. It’s a little embarrassing (for the league rep) that she was picked to please her girlfriend when it seems they needed a big more if they were serious about winning championships.

But she seems like a good kid and hope it works out with her and Paige over the long haul.

Agreed. Odds are never in favor of a 3rd round pick but Zee will get a shot and it is a resume builder. I think Janiah might be able to make the squad from the 2nd round. The Aces have had some roster shake-up and she has the talent and size but even 2nd rounders have an uphill battle to make the roster. The expansion teams are now another place where a player who just misses could still find a home.

The Wings acquired Jessica Shepard and Alanna Smith via trade. They also got Rayah Marshall in a trade, re-signed the girl from Europe that they picked #2 overall in 2021, and still had 6"7" Li Uru (spelled wrong, sorry) on the roster. Since they shored up the front court, that gave them the ability to draft a 3 point shooter which they desperately needed from last year. The way I looked at it is that if they wanted Paige to play off the ball, they would draft Miles, but if they wanted Paige to handle the ball they would select Fudd. This team is building for the future, so I don't think the personal relationship was the main reason for picking her. Having Areke, Paige, and Azzi on the floor at the same time could be a lethal situation, and with the new "Bigs" that they acquired they will be a playoff contender this coming season.

Agree to disagree. Wings took two aging, middish though solid semi bigs to cover for not making the obvious choice of Betts. Smith and Shepherd are already pegged as the most surprising and overpaid moves of free agency. Obviously Betts has much more upside, and paired with the vastly improved Li would have been perfect for the Wings. It's very apparent why this didn't happen,

I'm not mad at it though, Paige deserves the absolute investment in her this move signifies. It does subject the team to possible couple drama which csn be a fraught situation, though it definitely could be handled maturely if it comes up.

I read something last night about the pick and their relationship, and it mentioned they’ve been friends for at least a decade. So even though they are now more than just friends, with their history of resilience in going through tough times as teammates/friend/confidants, something tells me that it’s unlikely there would be any high drama if ever they were to break up. These two strike me as being women who will be able to just sit with the truth that maybe they should just go back to being friends and then move toward that lovingly.

That CAN happen in relationships like theirs in which they shared a long history of close friendship first.

All that said, it was DEFINITELY because Azzi is Bueckers’ boo that she was the #1 draft pick. lol Ain’t nobody buying any other explanations. And, like you said, glv, it’s okay for a franchise to consider their star player’s needs and wants.

Pao Pao wasn't a projected top 5 pick who fell to the 2nd round.

Is anybody surprised that Raegan Beers went undrafted?
Kinda, and also kinda not. She was a good college player, but if you’re going to be an undersized post in the W, you’d better kinda quick, highly capable of hitting threes and, maybe even more importantly, be dependable at the free throw line. I remember during the season hearing she only shot around 50%. Yikes.

She’ll be successful in pro ball, but it’ll likely be outside this country.

Funny, Draya was on ESPN last justifying the pick as filling the Wings need for a floor spacer and 3-point threat. That argument is not without some merit but that need pales in comparison to their gaps in the post.

Justine Pissott as a 2nd rounder, ahead of Janiah, to the Fever is another interesting pick. If she makes the team, I wonder how she will fit with Clark.
