WNBA discussion thread?

Seems she has steered clear of the negotiations fray. Is that a fair statement?
as well she should....

Caitlin Clark earns significantly more from endorsements than her WNBA salary, with deals from brands like Nike, Gatorade, State Farm, and Wilson, totaling an estimated $11 million in 2024 and increasing her value to well over $3 million annually from her Nike deal alone. Her total estimated endorsement income in the first year of her professional career exceeded her entire WNBA rookie salary by a factor of more than 100, placing her among the highest-paid female athletes in the world, according to Sportico.

Key Endorsement Deals
  • Nike: An eight-year deal worth approximately $28 million, including her own signature shoe.

  • Gatorade: A prominent sponsor, including during her college years.

    • State Farm: The first college athlete to be signed by the company.
    • Wilson: An endorsement that includes her own signature basketballs, making her one of the few athletes, including Michael Jordan, to have a signature collection with the brand.
    • Other Brand Partners: Clark also has endorsements with Buick, Bose, Topps, Panini, Gainbridge, Hy-Vee, Xfinity, and Lilly.
Financial Impact
    • Her endorsement income for 2024 was estimated to be $11 million, with the majority coming from off-court endorsements.
    • This income places her as the No. 10 highest-paid female athlete globally, according to Sportico.

Yep. Quite a bit from the first sound bite i heard earlier in yhe day. Holly Rowe got in some serious butt kissing too i saw. 👀
This one? I think CC handled this situation pretty well. Collier dropped the napalm so no need to add any more incendiary comments, just signal support for the cause.

Possibly. It was just a 15 second bite on espn. It was definitely a low friction take.

Speaking ahead of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Friday, Engelbert addressed the scathing accusations levied against her by Collier for the first time.

However, despite admitting that she was 'disheartened' by the player's sentiments, Engelbert appeared to double down as she denied, in particular, claims she made belittling remarks about Caitlin Clark.

'Obviously I did not make those comments,' the 60-year-old insisted to reporters.

'Caitlin has been a transformational player in this league. She's been a great representative of the game. She's brought in tens of millions of new fans to the game.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert fired back at the blistering criticism of her leadership

'[I'm] proud of what she's put on the court. Unfortunately, the injuries held her back from a full season this year.'

Yet, Engelbert once again denied making those remarks as she pivoted to the devastation of her children over the WNBA civil war.

'There's a lot of inaccuracy out there on social media and all this reporting,' Engelbert said.

'[...] I'm just obviously disheartened. You know, I'm a human, too. I have a family. I have two kids who are devastated by these comments. All I'll say is it's obviously been a tough week, and I just think there's a lot of inaccuracy out there.'

Well she is doubling down on not being a quitter. She is really giving the vibe of just not being up to the current challenges of being commissioner.
What a complete mess. No way the current players and this commissioner can exist together. One thing to remember though is that
Cathy has a boss named Adam Silver. The NBA commissioner is actually the wizard behind the curtain.

Meanwhile Unrivaled continues to take off They'll be having a tour night in Philly in January. Could this be the beginning of expanding to other cities?.

KP is one of the last unrivaled players announced, making six of the top seven Sparks on board. Only Julie A is missing, presumably playing in Europe. Wish all the sparks could play together. Not sure how the new players will be distributed amongst the existing teams, that should be announced in November.

It was a good game which I had on in the background. I can only manage really mild interest in this series and I wish it was five games, 7 is too much.
This was the game that mercury could have stolen. The aces big 3 all looked they had their game five in their legs. But the aces bench came up huge.

The wizard needs to act. I don't know if you saw her actual press conference but it was just a stream of corporate-speak BS-- my goal is to create synergies among our stakeholders and the players are "valued stakeholders." You could feel the players hearts melting on that one!!!!
It had the damage control tone of a CEO whose company had just been caught lacing their brand of baby formula with cocaine. Lots of vague references to statements being "taken out of context" and being committed to doing better in the future.

That presser was brutal. Didn't she have to quell an insurrection back in 2018?
The insurrection resulted in DearCathy and her head leaving the Presidential office a few hours apart.

Wall Street Journal, June 28, 2018

“Ms. Engelbert, the first woman to run one of the Big Four firms in the U.S., is three-plus years into a four-year term as Deloitte’s CEO. But Deloitte’s U.S. partners were told in a recent email that she wasn’t being renominated for a second term at this time as the firm begins its every-four-years CEO-election process, according to people familiar with the matter. Ms. Engelbert is eligible for another term, but Deloitte’s board didn’t support her renomination, one of the people said.”

I think so, I felt like the AI deep fake video seemed more genuine and human than Engelbert’s actual presser.
I know, right?

Here’s that other deal:

In 2018, Cathy Engelbert's role as CEO of Deloitte saw her involved in a controversy related to her departure from the company
. During her tenure, Deloitte's board did not back her for a second term, which reportedly stunned many partners and led to speculation about the reasons for the board's decision.
This controversy is distinct from the more recent and highly publicized issues Engelbert has faced as commissioner of the WNBA, which began in 2019. The two roles and the respective incidents are often conflated in public discourse.
Deloitte CEO controversy (2018)
  • Forced departure: The Wall Street Journal reported that Engelbert's departure was due to a lack of support for a second term from Deloitte's board, surprising many within the company.
  • Lack of explanation: The board did not provide a clear explanation to partners for the decision, fueling speculation and controversy.“

Also, what @1reVOLver said… 🤣🤙🏼🧡

Oh boy. Cathy did de facto call her a liar by denying she said what Phee said she said. Understandable Phee canceled.

Ordinarily, the universally beloved and respected Phee would win this battle going away. But not this time. She (and Stewie) are giving the league the only possible leg they have to stand on.

In light of the extreme unlikelihood of a settlement happening in time for a WNBA season, I guarantee Alex B, also known as Mr. Phee, is already looking into the possibility of some kind of an Unrivaled season next spring and summer. It’s a huge conflict of interest for Phee and Stewie to be anywhere near these negotiations, esp with exclusivity being an issue. They should’ve stepped away from the beginning.
