WNBA discussion thread?

“Under WNBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended without pay for one game upon receiving an eighth technical foul…”

It is sort of like suspending a driver's license after someone fails to pay a dozen speeding tickets.
Why is this situation controversial?

The NBA has a similar rule. Pro soccer leagues also suspend players after they accumulate a specific number of yellow cards.
This policy was not suddenly invented to target Angel nor is she the first player to be suspended for accumulating too many technical fouls in a give season. Last year, it was Natasha Cloud and Teaira McCowan.

Diana Taurasi had 6 such suspensions during her career.

On the NBA side, such suspensions are an annual (and predictable) event for Draymond Green.

The Draymond Rule… 🤣🤣🤣🤙🏼😉

It's not.

There is one person who is either
1) Unable or unwilling to read the cited WNBA rule, or
2) Unable or unwilling to acknowledge that Ms. Reese has yet to
qualify for sainthood.

“No, WNBA player Angel Reese has not been beatified. Beatification is a process within the Roman Catholic Church that declares a deceased person to have lived a holy life and is a step toward sainthood. There is no information to suggest that Reese, who is still alive, is undergoing this process.
The misunderstanding may have originated from a user on the social media platform Threads connecting her name to an unrelated religious news item. A post on September 4, 2025, stated that "Pope John Paul I was beatified on this day in 2022 by Pope Francis," which could have led to a confused association. ”

In fairness to the OP, I don't think they were complaining that it was unfair for AR to be suspended or that she qualifies for sainthood (as we all know, you need a better 3pt shot to be beautified as per Chuckiepoo's post).

I think the complaint was that someone was only posting about Angel when the news was negative but offered nary a comment about the series of excellent games she has had since returning from injury. It is a representation problem.

I get that criticism but on the flip side, her suspension is WNBA news and hence a legit topic to post in this thread.

Even the more mature version of Angel appears to have a shelf life of about two years with any particular organization.

I just hate that Angel not playing almost guarantees a Fever win over the Sky tonight and in fact they’re ahead by 20 just before the half. We need Fever losses.

If you like offense, turn on the sparks game. Amazingly, they’re close 56-52 at halftime against Atlanta. Rhyne Howard has 29, that’s right 29 points, on 7-8 fm 3 iin the first half Hamby has 19 and Rickea has had a very strong half with 13 points on 5-7 shooting.

Rhyne may make Paige’s 44 against the Sparks look paltry. OTOH, the Storm shot lights out against the sparks in the first half last week, then totally went in the deep freeze the second half and the Sparks won. Let it Be.

Lynne Roberts did that kooky thing again where she starts the second quarter with Plum,Hamby, and Rickea all on the bench. Then surprise! the sparks can’t score and the Dream starts to pull away. At least tonight she corrected course quickly and put them all back in. I don’t understand why she doesn’t rest them individually instead of playing freaking Pili and SAB in a game this important.

Very poor game for Lynne Roberts. That idiotic rotation was repeated to start the 4th qtr! I mean thats totally a tank rotation when they’re still in the playoff hunt. Cam Brink plays less than 10 minutes when the Sparks are getting killed inside in the second half. I love Azura but shes a major defensive liability and hasn’t exactly lit it up on offense lately.

After a very good first half, Rickea gets only two shots of in the entire second half. Plum and Hamby as usual go all hero ball. Rickea is open repeatedly in the post and on the wing and just doesn’t get the ball. Not sure why it’s hard for Roberts to see that the Sparks are 9-1 when Rickea scores 20 points or more. Sparks had long periods when they couldn’t score, yet ignored her. Very frustrating.

Rae has been struggling the last couple of games but did hit a three,

Of course, with such a laughable defense, apparently incapable of any adjustment they were probably never going to win anyway. Three more games to play out the string.

Every bit of this helps ARs brand. It’s built on this crap. Not sure how great it is for her career though.

Also, let’s not forget the tech she got suspended for was when she openly and obviously threw a punch. Probably should have been ejected.

Whew… breathe deep, center chi… as i resist the urge to be petty. 😉🤣🤣🤣🤙🏼🧡

If the Sparks miss the playoffs, and it is kinda trending that way, I don't think Roberts returns. I know that would be the Sparks 29th coach in 5 years but the front office has to look at GSV making the playoffs with a no-name roster and doing it with tenacious defense and a team oriented (no hero ball offense). In other words, everything the Sparks aren't. To many players wanting to be the star and not realizing who the actual star is.

Fire Roberts. Find a talented college coach who is tired of the recruiting/NIL circus and can get everyone rowing in synchronization. I would also pick up Jordan Horston (who probably can be got on the cheap) to be the defensive stopper, and an extra facilitator, this team needs. I bet Sabrina I would like to play for LA given her Kobe ties. Chalk Plum up to a failed experiment.

Storm blow yet another game. If they lose their last one to the red hot Valks, all the Sparks have to do is win out. As if.

Same scenario w the Fever. They lose out, Sparks win out they’re in.
Pretty good game. Storm had some tough calls go against them down the stretch but, hey, it keeps the Sparks alive!
