WNBA discussion thread?

Caitlin Clark steps on a basketball court and becomes both a 3 pt savant and a raging ass hole. She is by no means a helpless, put upon victim. She baits this stuff constantly, it’s part of her game. She particularly detests poor Jacy for some reason. This is how it started:

I don’t think the face rake was intentional, Shelton isn’t that kind of player. And who knows if the eyes even got poked, Caitlin’s going to act like she got acid poured in her face. I think the extreme over dramatic reactions are part of the reason she sometimes get under called. She cries wolf a lot, arms and legs wildly flailing and head rolling.

Could see Marina getting tossed, but again it looked like a bump that CC oversold. Actually very similar to the shove CC put on Jacy in the first clip, just Jacy didn’t drop and flail.

Here’s the final word fm on high:

As for Kellie Harper’s friend Sophie, her legacy will always be as a dirty player. Imagine leaving that for your kids to find out about. We don’t need hockey type enforcers. That’s an escalation that will get someone badly hurt. What are we doing here?

I know CC is not on your Christmas card list but eye pokes do hurt, intentional or not. The real issue is that Jacy got into CC’s face with a chest bump after the whistle which led to Clark’s push off. Mabrey’ s shove was pretty forceful and it does not take that much to knock over someone from that blindside angle. A rejection was warranted and it would have set a line about what would not be tolerated. By not ejecting Mabrey, it guaranteed there was going to be a retaliation play. I am with you on not Iiking the enforcer role but the refs are creating the context for it. And the league office has the ultimate responsibility. It is like they want to over compensate for the W in WNBA.

Real issue is the incident you describe was not the first. The first was when Clark taunted and shoved Jacy as seen iin the first clips I posted. But this always happens. The blow up gets posted and commented on as if poor CC was just standing there studying her Sunday School lesson and Attila the Hun suddenly assaults her. And thats just not true. CC is like the bratty younger sibling who starts the trouble then runs to tell Mommy. CC is very much that player, she baits and participates and always has. Would literally not have a game if not for the push off.

But a pox on both their houses. This ALL has to stop and its on the league and players, not the poor beleaguered refs. Wont be easy, they have to overcome the twisted notion that taunt culture and "physicality" is good for the game when its literally taking out players in droves. Or alternatively, they can continue to cater to those who get off on women fighting porn and let it become roller derby. Hell, that would probably get better ratings than real basketball anyway.

There's not a thing wrong with the trash talking the WNBA players are doing these days. Reese and Clark are a breath of fresh air to an other wise stagnant League. The Men do the talking and so can the Woman .

Using your analogy, “she started it” is the universal justification. It is unlikely that the clip you posted was the first (Clark) started it.). Jacy’s assignment was to be physical with Clark and not give her any space. They had been going at it all game. Clark gets guarded much like Steph curry in the men’s game. I don’t think the issue in this game was too much physicality in her defense per se but the refs letting thing escalate. A rejection for Mabrey’s shove would have provided the needed calm down factor.

Jacy not dirty? Because she's small and cute? Lol
The face jab, the follow up bump, then Marina's knock down hit, all 100% intentional. They were laughing about it on the bench after. I'm am absolutely not a Clark fan, but her teammates could not let that stand. Props to Sophie for doing the right thing.

Exactly. The facial expression is the story. When a player accidently injures an opponent, they are usually immediately apologetic, not grinning and then adding an additional bump and push after the whistle.

No doubt Clark is a trash talker on the court (though I note what is condemned in Clark is celebrated in legendary men players like Jordan and Kobe) but defenses don't seem to understand the line between hard defense and cheap shots. I think Stephanie White's postgame comments were spot on. It is a league wide problem but it is a bit more intensified when it comes to Clark.

I have not watched the wings that much but I don't think Paige Beuckers is getting this kind of hyper aggressive treatment. And there were no ominous warnings before her rookie season that "reality" is coming and so on.

I am starting to believe that one part (but not the only aspect) to the Clark reaction is that she does not have the Uconn/Geno pedigree . I believe that players would have been more accepting of the hype if she had been anointed as the heir to the Taurasi, Bird, Moore, Stewart legacy.

Iowa is an upstart program.

In that pic on the right #4 is smiling about doing it. Clark is a lighting rod for sure. Both from her own making to jealousy from other players.
Probably smiling bc Clark’s wild over reactions are a league wide joke now. It’s also why she gets under called.

Last time around, CC does much more than talk. She had openly shoved Shelton unprovoked during a dead ball earlier. Acting like CC is a total victim is insulting to her. She’s all in on this stuff.

Remember when she was in college and she brushed into that fan then rolled the floor like she’d been shot? Cries wolf to embellish stuff a lot.

Porn Star comes out in Support of Caitlin Clark in latest Bizarre Twist to WNBA controversy

My suspense over what porn stars think about Caitlin Clark has finally been addressed! I should be able to get a good night of sleep again. However, there is a building curiosity about what my pantry bugs are thinking about the Caitlin vs. Reese issue, so there is no rest for the weary.
Disclaimer: No diss to porn stars or pantry bugs intended.

Meanwhile, the league is beset w major injuries. Aja has a concussion, Phee has a bad back, Kah Copper came back one game and is out again. Kelsey Plum has a sore Achilles CC was out w the quad for awhile. Fever coach has been in and out w family matters.

Players are going back to Europe, like Dallas’ entire front court, and also just walking away. Odyssey Sims and Deanna Bonner are on extended personal leaves.

The Sparks went into the Storm game with SA Barker the only active guard. They picked up 2 journeymen, one of them 36 yrs old. They hung for a half but predictably got blown out. If Plum and Sims aren’t back soon it’s going to get real ugly as they’re going into a very tough stretch. Neither Brink nor Rae seem to be making any progress.

IMO a combination of overuse (looking at you Unrivaled) and too much contact allowed is really hurting the W right now. I never remember a messier season.

Longer season may have something to do with it.

It used to be that the W did not start until after the NBA finals were done, leading to a whole bunch of "we got next" promos. But personal leaves and family matters have always been a thing. Clark did not play unrivaled so her quad strain was just a bit of bad luck. In truth, the unrivaled system is probably less taxing on players than grinding it out in Russia, Turkey or other global locations. From what I have read, the Unrivaled players are very well cared for. Also, international players leaving to play for their countries in a FIBA competition is another fact of life in pro ball (Soccer also has to deal with these dual allegiances constantly but they build "international breaks" into their schedules). These called up Euro players are not exactly "walking away" and their teams knew this would be coming, so they should have had a better back-up plan.

Are WNBA concussions really up this season or is it just they have afflicted some star players this season?

On star players, Clark is on an interesting regression pattern. She returned with a brilliant game against the Liberty, had a good, though drama laden, game in her 2nd outing and last night against the Valkyries, she was awful-- a TO machine who could not buy a jumper and got blown by all night when on defense. A legendarily atrocious game. On the flip side, Boston is quietly putting together a very nice season.

Did you notice that the refs last night called a very different type game in the Fever vs Valkeries game? Much less hard contact allowed(a good thing, IMHO) . I did notice that Clark still was trying to blast thru or push off to get open when she really didn't need to. She never adjusted to the refs last night. Guess she thought she was going to get hammered all game like vs the Sun.

They’re way up and thats a trend. I read there were 15 total head injuries in 23, 20 last yr, and already 9 in the first quarter of this season.

CC is not about to adjust. Blast thru and push off has always been her game. It’s how she creates space for her shot. Also always been very emotional and demonstrative on court. That’s why it’s so annoying when folks act she’s Rebecca of Donnybrook farm.
